An Oriental Bay landmark, the Kingsgate Hotel Oriental Bay Wellington, is undergoing a $10 million makeover.
The refurbishment involves a complete exterior and interior redesign with the facade, entrance and lobby, guest rooms, restaurant, public areas and conference facilities all being completely renovated to transform the property into a Copthorne Hotel.
The hotel is owned and operated by Millennium Hotels and Resorts, New Zealand’s largest owner and operator of hotels with 31 properties under the Millennium, Copthorne and Kingsgate brands. The refit is taking place in stages which means the hotel will remain open throughout the refurbishment. From mid December it will operate as a limited service Copthorne Hotel with full services available to guests early February. A complete re-opening is scheduled for the end of February 2007.
Hotel general manager Brad Watts says the renovation has been designed to capitalise on the hotel’s stunning location on top of one of the world’s most spectacular harbours.
“Following its refurbishment, the new Copthorne Hotel Wellington, Oriental Bay will offer business and leisure travellers even greater levels of comfort, and an unparalleled window on Wellington with spectacular 180 degree views of the harbour and city beyond.”
Guests will be able to choose between luxurious suites, standard, premium and deluxe rooms as well as new dual key apartment style accommodation with a kitchenette, dining area and lounge adjoining the bedroom and bathroom. These new apartment style rooms enable the hotel to cater for the long-term, weekend and family markets.
The building’s exterior will undergo a facelift to simplify its external appearance with a contemporary look sympathetic to some of the newer residential apartment buildings along Oriental Parade. The facelift is working with the existing shell of the building and will not involve any expansion or other major external construction work.
The hotel’s interior will incorporate design cues from the surrounding environment. In the Bay Wing which overlooks the harbour, turquoise and aqua colours feature while guest rooms in the Roxburgh Wing pick up the warm shades of browns and earthy reds from the surrounding cliffs. The Hotel’s four luxurious suites will be decorated in warm shades for a very elegant look. Large bi-fold windows will enable suite guests to enjoy the stunning views while relaxing in the spa bath.
Public areas, the restaurant, conferencing facilities and function rooms on the Hotel’s seventh floor will be completely stripped and redesigned retaining only their spectacular harbour and city views.
Following the refurbishment, state of the art technology will be offered throughout the hotel. All rooms will feature high speed broadband internet access as well as LCD TV screens. In conjunction with Telecom, the new Copthorne Hotel will offer a video conferencing facility available to guests and members of the public wanting to hold video conferences with third parties in New Zealand and around the world.
