LONDON, ENGLAND – Launch of walkingthetmb.com , a website dedicated to personal experiences of wilderness hiking the 100 mile Tour du Mont Blanc . The Tour du Mont Blanc or TMB is one of the most exciting long distance wilderness walks in Europe. Taking about eleven days, with accommodation either in refuges or tents, the TMB takes hikers on an inspirational high altitude 100 mile trek through France, Italy and Switzerland in a circular route around Mont Blanc with a combined height gain and loss of around 33,000 feet.
Views en route are spectacular, refuges are memorable, the people met are remarkable and the sense of wilderness awe inspiring.
The website www.walkingthetmb.com was launched by Bruce and Anne-Marie Medhurst following their own experience of walking the Tour du Mont Blanc in 2007.
Said Bruce Medhurst, “In this day and age of package holidays many holiday experiences have been sanitised to the point where you no longer get close to the local flora and fauna but instead experience only what the package operator wants you to experience.
Consequently, there is a growing popularity in organising your own holiday itinerary, especially if it includes some degree of physical adventure.
Inspired the previous year by an agency organised hike in Scotland from Perth to Fort William Scotland, we decided that in 2007 we would try something more adventurous.
Given our love of mountains, an Alpine hike seemed the natural course to follow. After some book reading and much internet researching the Tour du Mont Blanc stood out as the hike to both challenge and inspire.
We had only been hiking for a couple of years, so as hiking novices, the thought of organising such an adventure ourselves was daunting. So many questions to ask and no single place to go for answers. In fact we were surprised that there was no single source of information on the internet promoting the hike and offering up to date information.
So on our return, www.walkingthetmb.com was born. “
The new website
offers information on planning and organising a Tour du Mont Blanc, including preparation and equipment, accommodation, travel, language and money. For the novice hiker, every piece of equipment taken is explained along with tips on its usage.
Walkingthetmb.com was established in 2007 and is privately owned and financed.
