Due to the range of exciting activities to enjoy in the Red Sea’s premier leisure destination resort, El Gouna is challenging guests to live life to the full by trying something new while on holiday.
Breaking from normal routines could uncover hidden talents and secret callings, so El Gouna challenges its guests to take part in its newly launched A-Z of activities and experiences challenge. Families, honeymooners, couples – there is something for everyone.
A – Angsana Spa
El Gouna is home to the Red Sea’s first and only Angsana Spas. Operated by the renowned Banyan Tree Group, indulge in a range of exotic treatments, facials and massages, typically costing around £38 for a 90-minute session. Signature treatments include the specially created Angsana and Fusion massages, designed to relax and invigorate the body so that even the unconvinced can’t fail to be converted.
B – Beaches
Located 22km north of Hurghada, El Gouna stretches along 10km of beautiful Red Sea coastline, providing plenty of private beaches for visitors to enjoy. With so much space, the beaches are never overcrowded, so just sit back, relax and enjoy El Gouna’s guaranteed year round sunshine.
C – Camel Rides
Get into the spirit of Egypt and test your skills at riding a camel. Take the challenge to see if it really is as easy as it looks…
El Gouna is home to a special dine around programme, which enables guests staying on a half or full board basis to eat outside their hotel up to three times during a seven night stay. Credits can be transferred to an equivalent hotel or used against eating at other establishments throughout the resort. With every cuisine imaginable available to try; branch out to taste something new. E – Environmentally Friendly
The environment is high on the agenda for everyone at El Gouna and this led to residents forming ‘Green Gouna’, a grassroots campaign founded in 2002 to turn El Gouna into an ecotourism destination. As a visiting guest, mix with the locals to help out on one of their regularly organised clean-up days.
F – Families
El Gouna is a heaven for families and younger guests are even christened ‘little gounies’. Most of the hotels offer kids’ club activities and babysitting services, while activities such as diving and water-skiing all also offer specially adapted programmes for younger guests. The resort’s aquarium is also an ever popular family attraction.
G – Golf
An 18-hole Fred Couples & Gene Bates designed championship golf course is at the heart of El Gouna’s golf offering. The academy offers expert golf tuition and equipment hire, while the driving range invites guests to aim for the greens located on platforms in the lagoons. Fearful of too many balls going astray, special floating golf balls are used so that they can be collected and reused for second attempts…
A resort destination, El Gouna offers a range of accommodation options to suit all guests, budgets and tastes. The range extends from 5* family beachfront accommodation, to 3* boutique divers’ retreats surrounding the marina. In addition, there are also self-catering apartments and villas which are available for renting.
I – International Community
El Gouna prides itself on being a cohesive international community, not dominated by any one nationality. The resort is home to many permanent residents, including local Egyptians, British and German homeowners, while the tourism market attracts guests from all over Europe and the world. Join in with the resort’s local events and activities and enjoy making friends with couples and families from all over the world.
J – Jewellery
Jewellery is one of the many handicrafts available within the shops and art village located in El Gouna. Enjoy testing your bartering skills and see just how many bargains can be squeezed into a suitcase for the way home.
K – Kitesurfing
El Gouna is a popular destination for kitesurfers, particularly as it is now home to the world’s largest centre. The shallow sandbar kitesurfing area is perfect for both experienced and beginners as it enjoys a constant wind parallel to the shoreline to guarantee plenty of practice days at any time of year. Kitesurfing champions also use the facilities to train and even attempt world records, endorsing the excellent experience that is just waiting to be tried out.
The resort of El Gouna is built on a myriad of islands surrounded by an intricate lagoon system, which inspires its name. Try a new mode of resort transport and enjoy extra recreational opportunities such as boat trips, pedalo and canoes.
M – Marinas
El Gouna currently has two marinas, with a third under construction. A designated International Point of Entry, the main Abu Tig Marina hosts up to 126 yachts and pleasure craft and also provides the starting point for excursions to neighbouring islands. The Abu Tig Marina also forms a social hub and focal point for the resort, hosting events such as the open-air Friday night marina party and boasting many of the resort’s popular restaurants and bars.
N – Nightlife
El Gouna’s nightlife is varied and suited to a variety of tastes. It is home to a casino and disco, as well as a host of bars and restaurants that stay open till late.
O – Oasis Night
Oasis night happens every Wednesday at the resort’s oasis at the foot of the Eastern Desert Mountain range. The evening offers oriental food and is catered for each week by one of the hotels. Enjoy camel rides, a display of belly dancing, whirling dervishes or enjoy a traditional shisha pipe with friends.
Protours is the El Gouna travel agency which organises a host of trips and excursions for guests to enjoy. Trips to cultural Cairo and Luxor are always popular, as are island, boat trips and off-road desert excursions.
Q – Quad Biking
Quad biking through the canyon behind El Gouna is one of the most popular land based activities in the resort. Ride solo or with a partner and race to the top of the canyon to enjoy a breathtaking sunset in silence across the spectacular desert plain.
El Gouna’s well-loved community feel results from the permanent residents who live there. Make the holiday dream last a lifetime and purchase one of the great value villas and apartments. Several styles exist to choose between and the resort will even help foreign owners rent them out in their absence.
S – Saturday Night Live
Enjoy live family entertainment at the heart of El Gouna’s old downtown area every Saturday night. Oriental shows are also held every Thursday in El Gouna downtown’s main Tamr Henna square, so enjoy a shisha pipe in one of the surrounding bars and cafés.
T – Tok Tok
The size of central London (yet with a more relaxed outlook on life), El Gouna has its own cheap and efficient transport infrastructure which easily rivals that of its London counterpart. Tok toks are one of the more novel ways to travel around as for just 50p per person guests are transported anywhere in the resort via covered motor tricycle! For the less adventurous a shuttle bus service also operates, costing just £1.50 for a week’s unlimited pass.
Located along a protected area of the Red Sea, El Gouna has nine diving schools to help guests discover its underwater beauty. Boats travel out every day to introduce guests to a whole new perspective and courses are available for beginners, experienced, disabled and even budding young divers.
V – Volleyball
Reminiscent of a scene from Top Gun, enjoy taking part in a game of volleyball on one of El Gouna’s beautiful beaches. Organise your own with friends or join in one of the regularly organised events as a way of meeting new people.
El Gouna’s location on the Red Sea coast lends it to offering a host of water-sports activities. Learn to kite-surf, windsurf, wakeboard and sail or enjoy catamaran excursions, banana boat rides, fun tubes and more.
X – X-rays
While not the most recommended of El Gouna’s activities, visiting guests can rest assured that El Gouna is home to its own hospital, including the area’s only decompression chamber, for any emergency needs. Alternatively it can potentially help patients such as those on dialysis to escape the UK by continuing their treatment during their holiday.
Y – Yalla Horse Stables
Fun for children and adults alike, uncover any hidden horseriding skills with expert tuition at El Gouna’s Yalla Horse Stables. Ride along the beach or take the easy option and enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride instead!
Located on its own island, Zeytouna beach offers a lively option for beachgoers looking for a change of scenery. Enjoy a game of international football, take part in al fresco dancing lessons or do a spot of snorkelling from the jetty leading to a coral plateau

What You Don’t Know About Travel Insurance
November 29, 2007 on 11:56 am | In Adventure Travel, Africa, Airlines, Alaska, Asia, Australia, Beachbooker, Cabinweb, California, Canada, Caribbean, Central America, Cruise Boats, East Coast, Europe, Florida, Great Lakes, Las Vegas, London, Mexico, Middle East, Midwest, New England, Outdoors, Pacific Islands, Pacific Northwest, Plains States, Rockies, Scotland, South America, Southwest, Sports Travel, Texas, The South, United Kingdom, USA, Wales | Comments Off Squaremouth, a leading online travel insurance comparison site answers some of the questions customers commonly ask about travel insurance. When should I buy insurance?
You can purchase insurance right up to the day before you travel. Some insurers offer full cover for any pre-existing medical condition yourself or a family member may have if you buy your policy within 10 to 21 days from the date you made the first payment towards your trip. Some policies require purchase during this period for Financial Default and Terorrism cover while others include these benefits no matter when you buy.
Don’t worry if it’s already more than 21 days since your deposit as medical cover is provided for any new emergency that’s not connected to an existing condition. Most insurers only look back 2-6 months to determine pre-existing conditions.
How much should I pay?
Every identical policy is sold at the same price regardless of who sells it! Look for added value and insist there are no extra administration charges added by anyone other than the insurance company.
Average family of four, expect to pay around 4 to 7% of your total trip cost. A single traveler under 50 will expect to pay around 5% of total trip cost. If you are over 60 but under 70, expect to pay 6 to 10% while the over 70’s should expect insurance to cost up to 12% but may find as low as 9% of your total trip cost.
We explain to our customers that they usually do not lose benefits by buying a policy at the least expensive range on squaremouth.com and in many cases get more cover than a more expensive package on offer. One reason for this is insurance companies aim their products at certain types of travelers. Travelex and AIG Travel Guard are usually very cost effective for families with kids under 16 while Travel Insured International have one of the best price to benefit ratios for travelers over 70. A good, easy to use comparison site is a must have for this type of research.
Should I buy travel insurance if my trip is within the USA?
If you do not need cancellation cover or if you are not flying, travel insurance is generally not needed. For travelers requiring cancellation benefits for a costly trip or those looking for peace of mind, travel insurance is worthwhile.
I have Medicare, do I need to buy medical cover for foreign trips?
Medicare does not provide cover while you are outside of the United States. In addition, Medicare Supplements may provide limited or no foreign medical cover. Travelers who have only Medicare Supplement A or B, and those with no supplement at all, should always make sure they have travel medical insurance before they leave the USA.
How does travel insurance handle pregnancy?
Most travel insurance policies only cover complications of pregnancy. This typically means a condition whose diagnosis is distinct from normal pregnancy but is adversely affected or caused by the pregnancy. Claims resulting from normal pregnancy, normal childbirth or elective abortion are generally always excluded.
How do I know if an insurer will look after my family in an emergency?
The short answer is in most cases you don’t unless you have successfully claimed from them before. Squaremouth offers a zero complaint policy which means an insurer selling products on it’s site does so only while it maintains a flawless record with its customers. “If even one of our clients has a complaint that we cannot resolve to our satisfaction, we will remove that insurer from our site”. Explains Chris Harvey, “it’s the most important thing we do; it’s way too late when you are in the middle of an emergency in a foreign country to find out you made a bad choice
with your insurance company. We choose the insurers on our site very carefully and stand behind their quality.”
Where should I buy travel insurance?
Beware of the hard sell – Insist on choice!
This is very important as most travel websites and tour/cruise operators either automatically include or will hard sell you their own policy. This is usually inferior to 3rd party products and can be much more expensive as it could include large administration charges.
Your cruise operator may insist that customers take out it’s insurance as a condition of the booking. If you are in this position and still want to make the booking, print out your policy EOB (evidence of benefits) page and compare it to the market leading policies using comparison tools such as www.squaremouth.com. At least you will know if you are missing out on any vital cover.
If you are making your own arrangements or are using a travel website or agent that will allow you to buy travel insurance separately, save time by using a comparison site. This saves you jumping from site to site and typing the same details over and over again.

Fraser Island’s Cool Dingo Tour Queensland

Fraser Island’s iconic Cool Dingo Tour has been named the ‘Best Experience in Queensland’ by some of the toughest travellers on the island’s sand tracks – international and domestic backpackers.
The inaugural TNT Golden Backpack awards, announced in Sydney last night as part of the national Adventure and Backpacking Industry conference (ABiC) were, according to TNT Magazine, designed to reward those companies who work hardest to make backpacking around Australia and New Zealand that extra bit special.
Cool Dingo Tours scooped top honours in its category, the only Fraser Coast operator to take out a prize, after a national campaign saw consumers vote in more than 40 categories.
Leisure Sales Manager Joe Currenti (a.k.a. Dingo Joe) said he was thrilled that Cool Dingo was flying the flag for the Fraser Coast by being named ‘Best Experience in Queensland’.
“Forget fidgety nights with tents and sleeping bags… our fully guided and all-inclusive Cool Dingo Tours promise a good night’s rest on Fraser Island, with comfy lodge accommodation, hearty buffet meals, 4WD tours and return catamaran transfers,” he said.
“These tours really are a great way to experience World Heritage-listed Fraser Island and to meet like-minded travellers from all over the globe. There’s plenty of action, great value and fun to boot – and best of all no tents, no sleeping bags
, no cooking, no driving and no worries.”
Dingo Joe was quick to point out the award win was the result of a collective effort and a great win for the region.
“This award belongs to the Cool Dingo Ranger guides who live and love Fraser Island,” he said.
“Without their passion and dedication we wouldn’t have won this inaugural Golden Backpack.”
The Golden Backpacks are Australia and New Zealand’s only dedicated awards for the independent travel sector.
Cool Dingo Tours are part of the Kingfisher Bay group of companies. For more information on Cool Dingo Tours visit www.cooldingotour.com.

BridgeClimb Sydney has won best ‘Major Tourist Attraction’ at the 2007 New South Wales Tourism Awards held last night, Thursday 15th November, at a ceremony in Sydney.
This is the sixth time that BridgeClimb has received this prestigious award since commencing its operations in 1998. The award celebrates and acknowledges tourism businesses that have demonstrated outstanding achievement throughout the past year.
BridgeClimb’s Managing Director, Todd Coates, accepted the award and acknowledged all of the climbers who have given BridgeClimb the chance to create for them an unforgettable memory of the world famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“Winning this award will inspire our team to drive forward with even greater commitment to ensure that every climber has the experience of a life time,” said Mr. Coates.
Mr. Coates also recognised the significance of winning this award during the 75th anniversary of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and quoted the words of the Governor of NSW, Prof. Marie Bashir, from this year’s celebrations – “A structure for its time has become a structure for all times”.
With over 2 million people having climbed the Bridge since opening, BridgeClimb is regarded as the ‘must-do’ tourist attraction in Sydney. Climbers can climb to the summit of this world famous icon on The Bridge Climb, or be surrounded within the Bridge’s massive structure as they scale to the top of the Bridge on The Discovery Climb.
