TAMARACK, Idaho – While the athletes at the Chevy U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix may have been the celebrities at Tamarack Resort there was someone there who was a bigger star to every athlete who met him. Michael Anwar is a 12-year-old boy from Spokane, Washington, with athetotic cerebral palsy and ataxia – diseases that require physical therapy and assisted care, among other things, for Michael to be able to adapt in day-to-day life.

“A lot of the focus was on him getting to meet us, but I think it was really special for our athletes to be able to meet such a great kid and a great fan. It was a win win,” said U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe Head Coach Mike Jankowski. “Even before I got to meet Michael I had the kids on the team telling me, ‘Oh, you have to meet Michael, he’s such a great kid.’”

As an avid snowboarder, who said he likes snowboarding because it’s “really fun,” it was Michael’s wish to meet some of his snowboarding heroes. Wishing Star, an organization that grants wishes to people between the ages of 3 and 21 who have life-threatening illnesses, decided to make his wish come true: they sent Michael to the Chevy Grand Prix.

“It’s been fabulous,” Michael’s mom Lisa Anwar said. “Wishing Star and everybody has been so generous. I just can’t say enough. We’re just excited to be here.” Tamarack is located about two houGet Your Sports Gear Herers north of Boise.

During his time at Tamarack, Michael met numerous snowboarders who autographed his snowboard. He also was able to present the awards to the winners of the men’s and women’s halfpipe competitions and he took his snowboard out to hit the fresh snow on Tamarack’s slopes.
