Utah’s Green Valley Spa Weight Loss Therapy
October 28, 2008 on 8:06 am | In Las Vegas, Midwest, Plains States, Rockies, Southwest, Spa Resorts, Sports Travel, Tennis | Comments Off
Green Valley Spa in St. George, Utah, has become the first destination spa in the U.S. to offer a medically guided weight loss program founded on the Simeons hCG hormone diet. Average weight loss on the 23-day program is a pound a day. The minimum stay for the hCG weight loss program at Green Valley is seven nights at a cost of $995 above the basic, all-inclusive spa package.
The program is offered by Dr. Gordon Reynolds, a former assistant clinical professor at UCLA and Loma Linda University with more than 50 years of experience practicing medicine, including five at Green Valley.
The use of hCG in the treatment of obesity was discovered by the late British physician, Dr. A. T. W. Simeons, who published his first report on the topic in 1954. He devoted years to researching the causes and treatments of obesity, and his work showed that, with low doses of hCG and a 500-calorie-a-day diet, users reported no headaches, hunger pains, weakness or irritability, and an average weight loss was one pound a day with no muscle loss.

Discover Yukon with Great River Journey
October 27, 2008 on 5:32 pm | In Adventure Travel, Alberta, British Columbia, Canada, Nunavut, NWT, Ontario, Outdoors, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Toronto, Yukon | Comments Off
WHITE HORSE, Yukon—The Great River Journey is a unique world-class river boat safari down the historic Yukon River in Northern Canada. It combines the adventure of a wilderness river safari with a journey of personal discovery; there is no other excursion like it in North America.
The Great River Journey begins in Whitehorse and unfolds over eight days and 373 miles of wilderness leading to Dawson City.
Along the way, it passes through the traditional lands of our four First Nations partners, whose citizens are among the people who will be hosting, guiding and caring for guests. Small groups travel in their own riverboat with a pilot and an experienced local guide.
Frequent landings are made to view wildlife, explore the wilderness and historical sites, rest and relax. The small group size and the wide variety of Yukon attractions permit each tour to be personalized to accommodate special interests such as wildlife viewing, nature photography, bird watching, hiking, paddling and participating in cultural and interpretative programs.

CODY, Wyo.—Planning the typical multi-sports travel adventure can get complicated. Long before anyone lifts a paddle or laces-up her hiking boots comes an itinerary, a plan calling for frequent stops, the hiring of a local outfitter, and arranging for suitable food and shelter along the adventure trail. Yet, There’s one vacation category where sports loving families can simply park the car, unpack their bags and settle in for a week of jam-packed action. It’s the Western dude ranch, a place where folks don’t have to think about what comes next because all the details are in place to let the good times roll!
Sure, the horse and riding are paramount to any Western dude ranch experience. The longest standing organization promoting and preserving the Western ranch lifestyle, The Dude Ranchers’ Association, or DRA as it’s often called is the first to confirm riding is at the heart of any ranch getaway.
But, according to DRA Executive Director, Colleen Hodson, there are folks who wouldn’t dream of hopping on a saddle that choose a DRA Western dude ranch for active family vacations. In addition to riding or sometimes in place of, they ride the rapids, paddle a canoe, play golf or tennis, hike in the wilderness, cycle the back roads and mountain trails, go caving, hot air ballooning or rock climbing. She says active parents usually participate in the same sports as their kids, and she adds, “Another beauty of multi-sporting at a dude ranch is when they want to take time for themselves, Dad can play a round of golf and Mom can relax with spa treatments.”
That’s an apt description for Averill’s Flathead Lake Lodge, a 2,000 acre, family operated Montana dude ranch, nestled on a bay on the east shore of Flathead Lake just south of Glacier National Park. Here, guests are steps away from the largest freshwater lake West of the Mississippi.
A waterfront staff leads activities at the main dock daily, including sailing, water skiing, and wake boarding. Instruction for beginners and private lessons are available. The ranch volleyball, tennis, and basketball courts see a lot of action each day as do the horses, as riding can get competitive here as well. There are team penning and barrel racing events all week ending with a family rodeo. And yes, there’s a top-rated Jack Nicklaus Jr. golf-course just minutes away as well as an on-site professional masseuses skilled in therapeutic massages from hot stone to rejuvenating deep tissue.
Arkansas’s Horseshoe Canyon Ranch is another paradise for families on multi-sport adventures. Tucked into the Buffalo River Wilderness of Northern Arkansas, sporting adventures include “Frisbee” golf, skeet shooting, the state’s longest zip line course, and of course, rock climbing. One of the finest climbing courses in the state was developed on ranch property. Added in 2006, the zip-line carries many a thrill seeker moving at breakneck speed above a deep gulch. For some, paddling the Buffalo River, trout fishing, or exploring old Indian caves provides enough action.
There are well over 100 DRA member ranches in the US and Canada, many providing a lengthy menu of sports activities similar to the ranches profiled. Each DRA ranch earns its’ membership by maintaining or exceeding the association’s high quality standards.

CAÑON CITY, Colorado—Active adults who want to see the vibrant colors of fall and learn more of Colorado’s colorful history are invited to take a ride with the Royal Gorge Route Railroad on the most famous portion of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western train line. The two-hour scenic and historic journey departs twice daily through October 12, and on weekends from October 12 to December 31. There will be special holiday daily departures between December 20 and December 31.
The Royal Gorge is a canyon nearly 1,000 feet deep, carved by the Arkansas River. Tourists who have seen it from the bridge only have half the story – below, the Royal Gorge Route runs on tracks that were built as part of a two-year struggle for ownership between the two largest railroads at the time. In the late 1870s, the Denver & Rio Grande and Santa Fe Railroads were battling for the right-of-way through the canyon to gain faster passage from the east to the west – but with the narrow clearance, only one would succeed. This two-year struggle between the two railroads became known as the “Royal Gorge War” – and today’s visitors can discover the engineering feats, such as the “Hanging Bridge,” where the tracks are suspended over the river along the north side of the gorge – because the canyon is only 30 feet wide.
By 1882 the Royal Gorge route became a transcontinental rail link between Denver and Salt Lake City, and was used regularly until the late 60s, when even the mail turned to other modes of delivery. The tracks remained, and in 1998 a 24 mile portion of the route was re-opened for passengers to experience the “Grand Canyon of the Arkansas.” The views from the suspension bridge high above the gorge are nothing like the views from the ground – where it is much easier to see wildlife and appreciate Colorado’s rugged and varied landscape. All passengers have access to the open-air observation cars, which allow for the best views of the Royal Gorge. Passengers may choose from many classes of service, including the “Vista Dome” cars – classic 1950s glass-topped dome cars, which offer unobstructed views from the top level. Other options include Coach, Lunch and Dinner trains, and the new Wine Express trains that feature gourmet appetizers paired with specially-selected wines.
The fall is a great time to visit this Colorado landmark you might not have had time to see – children are in school, the summer crowds have returned to work, and the autumn leaves are brilliant. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad offers five classes of service, ranging in price from $32.95 for coach class to $155 for an observation dome seat on the Wine Dinner Train, which includes five delicious courses paired with award-winning wines that compliment the meal. The railroad is easily accessible from US 50 and is less than an hour from Colorado Springs and Pueblo, and about two hours from Denver, Boulder, Limon and Gunnison. World class taste, world class service, and world class entertainment all add up to one unforgettable trip!
