Each of these upscale resort spas follow their own unique treatment ideology to soothe the body, mind and spirit – as well as offer state-of-the-art exercise facilities, world-class golf courses, stunning grounds and scenic surroundings, and gourmet dining to provide a well-rounded experience.
The Gleneagles Hotel, referred to by newspapers as “the eighth wonder of the world” when it opened in 1924, has announced a new Spa Essence Package for May through September.
The package includes accommodations in a Classic Room, full Scottish breakfast, table d’hôte dinner, 55-minute spa treatment and full use of the club’s leisure facilities; price is from £555 ($730*) per room, per night, valid Sunday-Thursday.
Situated on 850 acres of rolling countryside in Scotland’s heartland, the Spa by ESPA combines modern techniques with ancient therapies for a holistic approach to its treatments, and has been named by Condé Nast Traveler as 2009 Favorite Scottish Hotel Spa.
The hotel and spa’s amenities are modern and extensive, including crystal steam rooms, tropical showers, chilling ice rubs and a two Michelin-starred restaurant, Andrew Fairlie – serving French cuisine with a Scottish twist – famous for its signature dish of smoked lobster.
The Marcliffe Hotel & Spa, an elegant 5-star hotel set on 11 acres of beautiful wooded grounds in Aberdeen, has two compelling – and easy to combine – discounts.
Its Sunday Suite offer comes with a full a la carte menu, bed and breakfast in a junior suite, and a bottle of Pommery Champagne upon arrival, priced at £325 ($478*) for two people sharing, inclusive of VAT and service charges. On the Monday morning, guests are invited to take advantage of the “Spa Offer,” a 20% price reduction on all treatments every Monday and Tuesday.

For those seeking local sightseeing and other activities, the Marcliffe is minutes from Aberdeen’s city center, dozens of golf courses including the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, established in 1780, 50 castles and 30 malt whiskey distilleries.
Overlooking the sea in northern Scotland is the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa. Their Kohler Water Spa, whose health and relaxation treatments are based on the healing properties of the earth’s mineral-rich waters, takes pride in announcing the recent addition of Sara Maciver as Spa Director.
Sara plans to use her 22 years of experience – at prestigious establishments including One&Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas, Atlantis Spa on Paradise Island and Westin Resort and Villas in the U.S. Virgin Islands – to introduce innovative signature services.
Managing director Debbie Taylor believes Sara’s “extensive knowledge and infectious enthusiasm are set to take the spa to new levels of success.”
Kohler Spa is currently offering the 24-hour Spa Escape, which includes a one-night stay, full Scottish breakfast, 25-minute Kohler Massage, 25-minute Burst of Radiance Facial, a two-course spa lunch and unlimited use of the Kohler Waters Spa facilities; cost is £300 ($441*) per room, per night.
In Edinburgh, the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa would never be mistaken for a hotel chain; its stunning design – a translucent six-story, colored glass building – and the amenities of its ONE SPA health and fitness complex give it the cachet to match any other five-star establishment.
And it is now one of only five spas in Scotland to offer the new Super Active treatment from ESPA.
The 80-minute treatment, using ESPA’s scientifically formulated products, is tailored specifically to each client’s skin’s needs; calming and soothing while repairing and restoring skin – including aging, dehydration and environmental stress – and costs £120 ($177*).

Alsace’s New Leisure Park
May 15, 2009 on 10:21 am | In France, Paris | Comments Off
It is a little known fact that in the sixteenth century the region of Alsace in eastern France experienced a ‘silver rush’.
In 1502 silver was discovered in what is now known as the Val d’Argent and people travelled from all over Europe in the hope of striking it rich.
Although many of them used only divining rods to seek their fortune there were plenty of success stories. One prospector even discovered a block of silver weighing 592 kg!
The Tellure silver mine is opening once again, but this time not to those with pick-axes and hard hats but to the public with guide books and cameras. Visitors will be able to retrace the footsteps of those early prospectors as they journey through the high quality cave networks that run under the magnificent Vosges Mountains north west of Colmar.
One of Tellure’s most striking features is a 180 m high cave which provides a breath-taking illustration of the scale of the mining operations.
Tellure will use a variety of sound, light and video special effects as well as panoramic cinema and reconstructed scenes to provide a fully immersive experience.
Many of the exhibits will be interactive and all will be translated into French, English and German with audio-guides also available. Tellure will also host an important collection of jewellery that has been made from silver and minerals found at the site, including pieces made by René Lalique and Cartier.

Chuan Spa At The Langham, Auckland
May 14, 2009 on 5:23 pm | In Australia, Beachbooker, New South Wales, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Spa Resorts, Sydney | Comments Off
The exquisite Chuan Spa at The Langham is now open and destined to become Auckland’s ultimate urban oasis while setting a new benchmark in spa excellence for New Zealand.
Offering unforgettable spa treatments such as a Tri-bathing Ritual which includes a snail shower*, ice experience** and herbal steam rooms, Chuan Spa is an opulent retreat away from the outside world offering signature health and beauty treatments based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
The newly built NZ$4 million Chuan Spa facility has six treatment rooms, individual and dual suites, a heated outdoor infinity pool and jacuzzi, relaxation lounges and a state-of-the-art fitness centre.
Matched with the exceptional service that is to be expected from The Langham, it will undoubtedly make the hotel even more of a destination than it already is, says Jeffrey van Vorsselen, Managing Director of The Langham.
“The Langham experience is highly regarded so we are delighted to welcome Chuan Spa as we further enhance the range of five-star services we provide.
The design of Chuan Spa has been previously unseen in New Zealand, the service level and holistic spa journey not experienced before and the innovation we bring with Chuan Spa has the potential to put Auckland on the map for international spa travellers.”
Chuan Spa will offer more than 30 specialty spa treatments combining the finest traditions from the east and west with exclusive Chuan experiences, based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and working alongside Thalgo products. Chuan is the Chinese word for flowing water and this is reflected throughout the design of the spa on the second floor of the 410 room hotel.
Chuan Spa innovations include a treatment for travellers dealing with jet lag, common for long haul visitors to New Zealand, a Ming Facial using gold magnets on the skin to increase stimulation and reduce skin ailments and a range of Chuan massages, wraps, scrubs, facials and TCM treatments with a qualified TCM consultant.
Accompanying Chuan Spa, two opulent Oriental inspired residential suites or ‘Havens’ have also been launched to support the Chuan Spa experience when staying at the hotel. The ‘Havens’ are available only when booking Chuan Spa accommodation packages and are designed to provide the ultimate Chuan Spa experience from start to finish.
“People might think that in this economic climate launching a luxury spa brand is an interesting move,” says Mr van Vorsselen. “But what we have in fact done is create ten new jobs and bring an international spa and hotel experience to the doorstep of Aucklanders and New Zealanders. This is at a time when we are being encouraged to holiday in our own city and country. A visit to Chuan Spa will feel like a true getaway which I think will prove popular with both hotel guests and day spa visitors alike.”
Development and investment in the hotel is continuing with the upcoming refurbishment and extension of The Langham’s Rangitoto ballroom.
“While Chuan Spa is a further jewel in our crown, it is not the final one,” says Mr van Vorsselen, who will oversee The Great Room at The Langham project which is a 1200 seat capacity ballroom intended to replace the current facility. The Great Room at The Langham will open fully in February 2010.

Koh Samui for Adventure
May 14, 2009 on 5:04 pm | In Adventure Travel, Asia, Beachbooker, Sailing, Scuba Diving, Spa Resorts, Surfing Resorts, Thailand | Comments Off
There’s plenty to do in Koh Samui – from a secluded holiday in a five-star spa resort, to hanging out in a basic beach bungalow.
As Thailand’s third largest (and, for many, favorite) island, Samui has captivated tourists, young and old, since a couple of backpackers, roughing it on the deck of a copra boat from Bangkok in 1971, “discovered” the jewel off Thailand’s east coast – a paradise of white-sand beaches, secluded coves, coconut plantations and wild interior.
Today, Samui, where participants on ASTW post – AGM tour number 3 will spend six days, still exudes the same natural beauty, despite nearly four decades of development.
Chaweng and Lamai beaches are the busiest, with a nightlife to match. Bo Phut and Mae Nam bays are popular with older romantics and honeymooners.
The post – AGM group will fly in by Bangkok Airways for an immediate introduction to yet another face of always-surprising Koh Samui – a visit to an elephant camp for a short trek through bamboo forests. Later the same day they’ll see how monkeys are trained to pick coconuts from tree and learn how to make a jungle curry with coconut oil.
The second day will be an excursion by boat to Ang Thong Marine National Park, a collection of 40 pristine islands with natural caves, blue lagoons and stunning rock formations. There will be time to swim, sunbathe and snorkel.
Another day is spent visiting more islands for swimming and lunch.
