Explore the Green Side of Martinique
July 31, 2009 on 10:45 am | In Adventure Travel, Beachbooker, Caribbean, French West Indies, Outdoors | Comments Off
Now more than ever, people are interested in how their food is produced.
They want to meet the producers and talk with them about what goes into the food production process.
Agricultural tourism, or agritourism, responds to this new demand.
This is a style of vacation that normally includes staying on a farm, getting engaged into farm activities ranging from picking fruits or feeding animals, to planting crops. In our actual highly urbanized life, agritourism creates a great opportunity to connect children to nature.
Some of them who visit the farms have often never seen a live duck, or pig, and have never picked an apple right off the tree. This will also give them the chance to help with farming tasks during their visit.
Agritourism farms in Martinique offer a chance to develop the local economy, create eco-oriented craft souvenirs, and inform visitors about current agriculture practices. Some of the farms also provide accommodations, usually on location, in order for the visitor to fully experience “Martinique Green”, the other side of the island.

NYC HIGH-ALTITUDE BRUNCH
July 31, 2009 on 10:38 am | In Dine Drink, East Coast, Hotels, New York City | Comments Off
Spectacular Views and Good Food Go Hand in Hand This Summer Throughout the City’s Boroughs—
NYC & Company, New York City’s marketing, tourism and partnership organization, is touting a new trend in town this summer: high-altitude brunches.
From Manhattan to Brooklyn to Queens, rooftops are catering to people seeking more than just a meal. In the vertical city of New York, good food and good views go hand in hand. From 230 Fifth, Hudson Terrace and the Gansevoort in Manhattan to the Ravel in Queens and Alma in Brooklyn, the City offers some excellent options for those lazy summer weekends.
“This summer, visitors and residents can retreat to the rooftops to not only take in spectacular views of our City from many different vantage points, but also enjoy some excellent food and drink,” said George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company.
Manhattan’s largest rooftop bar, 230 Fifth, offers its Champagne Party Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 5pm year-round, rain or shine, on its 14,000-square-foot palm-decorated roof deck and 8,000-square-foot fully enclosed lounge.
More than 40 dishes are offered, the majority priced between $8 and $12, including such signatures as “Liquored Up” French toast and matzah brei.
Along with a number of specialty cocktails, six champagnes are served by the bottle and the magnum. “Bigger is better” is the theme at this rooftop retreat, which offers stunning views of New York City including head-on views of the Empire State Building. (www.230-fifth.com)
This summer, the party goes sky-high at Hotel Gansevoort’s new Get Up Get Down brunch and roof-deck party. Hotel Gansevoort’s Plunge bar features 360° views of the Hudson River and Manhattan, indoor and outdoor terrace seating and a fully landscaped garden. Served from noon to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, the three-course $36 menu includes items like a panache of charcuterie and salumi, grilled Black Angus burgers, steak frites and eggs and mini cupcakes for dessert. The brunch will be offered through Labor Day. (www.hotelgansevoort.com)
For breathtaking views of the Hudson River and the Intrepid Museum, check out the Groovedeck at Hudson Terrace, a rooftop lounge discreetly tucked away at the edge of Midtown, along the Hudson River. Brunch is served on Sundays from 2pm to 8pm. The menu includes a delicious assortment of dishes, including French toast, sourdough toast, smoked salmon, Maplewood bacon, homemade chocolate chip muffins and an assortment of fresh omelettes. Brunch cocktails include a selection of red and white sangrias and mojito pitchers. Champagne is available by the bottle. (www.hudsonterracenyc.com)
Those seeking a truly luxurious experience should head to the Peninsula New York’s Salon de Ning rooftop bar for its Sunday Brunch on the Terrace.
From the 23rd-floor perch overlooking Fifth Avenue, guests will be able to take in exceptional views of the cityscape as they enjoy the three-course brunch and the eclectic grooves of a live DJ.
The second course, offered bento-box-style, consists of four small dishes. The set menu, which varies weekly, has included slow-roasted prime rib with aged cheddar twice-baked potato, melted leeks and candied baby carrots; and the poached organic egg with Maine lobster hash and truffled hollandaise.
Champagne cocktails are available, including the Beijing Rouge, a concoction of pomegranate juice, citrus vodka, and champagne with a raspberry garnish.
The brunch costs $49 per person (excluding beverages, tax and gratuities). It is served Sundays from 11:30am to 2:30pm through Labor Day, and possibly later, weather permitting. (www.salondening.com)
Over in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn, Alma offers a beautiful rooftop brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2:30pm.
Stunning views of the Manhattan skyline complement the delicious Mexican fare, along with cocktails and tequilas. Brunch is served year-round; reservations are accepted for large parties. www.almarestaurant.com
Nestled alongside the Queensboro Bridge in Long Island City, the new Ravel Hotel, the borough’s only luxury boutique property, serves a Sunday buffet brunch on its rooftop from 10am to 2pm (and the endless mimosas keep flowing until 3pm). Top DJs provide the beats while patrons take in the stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, just across the East River. (www.ravelhotel.com)

Standup Paddleboard Lessons at What’SUP
July 31, 2009 on 10:22 am | In Beachbooker, California, Los Angeles, San Diego, Surfing Resorts | Comments Off
La Jolla, California – Surf Diva Surf School is proud to announce their new surf division: What’SUP, specifically for Standup Paddle (SUP) surfing.
Known to the originators as, Hoe he’e nalu, Standup Paddleboarding is an ancient form of surfing and can be traced back to ancient Polynesia.
Standup Paddle Boarding, or SUP, is the hottest new sport to hit the coast in San Diego. Long recognized in Hawaii as a great way to get a workout on a flat day, standup paddle boarding has also evolved into a new variation of surfing for those who want a fun activity with instant success and an easy learning curve.
Surf Diva Surf School, in the teaching business for 14 successful years, is one of the first schools in San Diego to offer lessons and rentals of SUP boards through its new program called What’SUP.
Located in the most idyllic spot on the west coast to gently launch into the ocean’s premiere scenic and environmentally protected aquatic park, La Jolla Cove and ecological preserve, What’SUP features top male and female instructors from as far as Hawaii and Australia who are drawn to this program because of its stellar worldwide reputation.
What’SUP teaches all ages, including kids, since they are open to anyone who can swim. In fact, co-owner Izzy Tihanyi notes that women seem to learn to balance on the boards a bit easier than most men.
“We’ve taught many couples where the husband is a great surfer and the wife is just starting out.
But on a SUP they are on an even playing field and the ladies just love it!”
“You don’t have to be a surfer to learn to SUP. It’s fun to just paddle in the flat water. The view from above is amazing,” says co-owner Coco Tihanyi.
The water at La Jolla Cove is so clear that you can see through to the leopard sharks (not dangerous, mostly bottom feeders), garibaldi (California’s state fish), and the occasional sea lion, dolphin, or sea bass.
From the SUP it’s one of the most beautiful views in the world: the sweeping cliffs with the famous caves of La Jolla all the way past the Scripps Institute of Oceanography Pier to the fine dark silky sand at Black’s Beach.
Catching waves is something that Surf Diva also teaches, but recommends a basic surfing background before attempting to launch into the line-up.
“It’s important to know what you are doing if you are going for waves, especially in a crowded spot. These are huge boards and understanding how the maneuver in the surf is important for both safety and etiquette,” says Izzy Tihanyi.
“Our SUP instructors are both excellent surfers and paddlers, in addition to being fully certified Surf Diva instructors, are pre-requisites to teaching this amazing sport. So before paddling out to the surf, sign up for a package of SURF n SUP lessons at Surf Diva Surf School, you’ll be glad you did!”
The recent growth of SUP has been recently noted by TransWorld Surf Magazine in an April 2009 article outlining the phenomenal reach of the sport.

CHICK Corea Return To ForEver Tour
July 31, 2009 on 10:16 am | In Southwest, Webbandstand | Comments OffCHICK Corea, Stanley Clarke & Lenny White
Play Orpheum Theatre Saturday, September 12
(Phoenix, AZ) – Following their celebrated reunion during last year’s triumphant Return to Forever tour, Chick Corea will join once again with his Return To Forever bandmates Stanley Clarke and Lenny White for a worldwide trio tour.
Corea, Clarke & White actually harkens back to a week-long engagement in 1973, when they performed as a trio at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco.
The Power of Three stops at Orpheum Theatre Saturday, September 12 for an 8:00PM show.
Says Corea of the new trio, “Now that we’re playing together again, there’s a flood of creativity and inspiration that could only come from making music with this group.
“Stanley, Lenny and I are looking forward to taking it back to the trio setting we had when we were putting the first electric version of RTF together. That week we did at the old Keystone Korner in ‘73 remains memorable for us and has become a starting point for the new musical explorations we’re planning.”
For the Fall tour, Corea will alternately perform on 9-foot grand piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano and various synths while Clarke will switch off between upright and electric bass. Performances are expected to be recorded for download sales on the band’s website. A CD may also be released at the end of the tour.
