Escape The Tourist Traps in Italy
July 15, 2009 on 6:40 am | In Adventure Travel, Beachbooker, Cabinweb, Italy, Rome | Comments Off
The best (unknown) Italian towns and where to stay, for less…
Believe it or not, in the south of Italy, Sicily & Sardinia there are still many beautiful towns and villages that are undiscovered, not only by the Brits, but even by Italian tourists… the accommodation and the cost of living is VERY good value:
There are wonderful beaches, architecture, art and history, museums and galleries, pretty piazzas, superb restaurants – but best of all – without the hordes!
P U G L I A – The town: Conversano
Why go? Right in the ‘heel’ of the boot, close to fantastic sandy beaches, this is a wonderful little mediaeval town with real character – typical, narrow, traffic-free streets which meander through the central square; a surprising number of great restaurants for such a small place (one of which is in the ‘Gambero Rosso’ guide – Italy’s answer to the Michelin guide);
Where to eat: “Osteria Giangirolamo”, just off the main square. There’s no menu – just go with the chef’s recommendations for that day and you certainly won’t be disappointed. Really excellent food, using the freshest of local ingredients.
Where to stay: The Corte Altavilla – right in Conversano’s historic centre. This small, unusual hotel is steeped in history and it oozes charm and elegance. It now has a lovely restaurant on the roof terrace, overlooking the old town.
In July, double rooms on a B&B basis start at £43 per night. Flights to Bari start at approx £168 per person.
Bookings of 7 nights or more get a 10% discount.
S I C I L Y – The town: Noto
Why go? Famous in Sicily for its stunning Baroque architecture, Noto is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area is a relatively undiscovered part of the island. Right in the south-east corner, it’s so much less touristy than most other places on Sicily, yet with attractions that could easily rival the better-known areas from the guide books.
Where to stay & where to eat: The Masseria di Salvatore.
This traditional ‘masseria’ (farmhouse), is in the rolling countryside, just outside Noto.
The emphasis is on the Sicilian way of life – a relaxed atmosphere; simple rooms furnished with Sicilian antiques and the restaurant serves a rustic, authentic cuisine.
In July, double rooms on a B&B basis start at £54 per person, per night. Flights to Catania start at approx £165 per person.
Bookings of 7 nights or more get a 10% discount.
BASILICATA – The town: Maratea
Why go? This region has two coastlines – Maratea, on the Tyrrhenian side, has a pretty harbour, a quaint, old centre, little squares, old churches and interesting shops.
The town is dominated by a huge, marble figure of Christ, visible day and night, it guards over Maratea and its citizens. The rocky coastline is spectacularly dramatic and if you travel a little inland you will find yourself in the stunning, mountainous Pollino National Park. This is a region of real contrasts.
Where to eat: “Vincenzo di Mare” at the Port, excellent seafood in a lovely setting, overlooking the sea.
Where to stay:
The Hotel Villa Cheta is a fine old villa, overlooking the coast. It has been renovated with taste and is furnished mostly with antiques.
With only 23 very individual rooms, lovely terraced gardens and panoramic views over the sea below, it is easy to enjoy its relaxing and intimate atmosphere.
The food served in their restaurant is absolutely delicious. Our advice to clients is to stay here last, as it’s an impossible act to follow!
In July, double rooms on a B&B basis start at £55 per person, per night. Flights to Naples start at approx £165 per person
Windermere’s Hotels Du Lac 2009 Grand Tour
July 15, 2009 on 6:36 am | In Adventure Travel, Beachbooker, Cabinweb, Golf Resorts, Hotels, London, Outdoors, Road Trips, Sailing, Scotland, Shopping, Spa Resorts, Sports Travel, Tennis, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off
One of England’s most glorious locations, The South Lakes, is wooing those declining to take their usual “Grand Tour” of Europe this year, by highlighting the superb facilities on offer at some of its own ‘hotels du Lac’.
The lac in focus is Windermere, the biggest in the country and the liquid hub of the Southern Lake District, set amidst stunning fells, supporting picturesque water craft of all shapes and sizes and encapsulated in millions of photographs each year.
Ten ‘hotels du lake’ – or mere, as Windermere should technically be termed – have been identified as some of the most superb places to stay on the shores or surrounding hills by those seeking luxury, comfort, facilities, breathtaking views and that little je ne sais quoi, Lake District style.
1. The Samling – Rosettes and Reputation
The 3 AA star and 3 AA rosette Samling’s reputation as one of the country’s top hotels has been well earned. It describes itself as a luxury hotel in the country, not a country house hotel and has no ‘best room’. All but two have stunning views of the lake, five having been fashioned out of original cottages and six in the main house of an original home set in 67 acres, a few thousand feet above Windermere.
Each luxurious cottage boasts an individual décor and architectural style, some having two and others three floors. From extravagant wall-coverings to authentic Lakeland slate influences, each room has a personality of its own.
Once owned by Wordsworth’s landlord, John Benson, William would regularly pay his Dove Cottage rent here. Cultural influences still abound, with contemporary works of art and sculpture dotted around the grounds.
Classic, luxury double, junior suite and full suite options are available, ranging from £190-£260 to between £370-£660 for bed and breakfast for two people, to between £280-£350 and £460-£750 for table d’hote dinner bed and breakfast.
More details are at www.thesamlinghotel.co.uk or 01539 431922.
2. Storrs Hall – Extravagance and Elegance
The 4 star Storrs Hall is a luxury hotel in a Grade II Georgian mansion set in 17 acres of grounds that provide endless views of Windermere in what it calls a Swallows and Amazons-like location, right on the lake’s shore.
The breathtaking vista is amplified, framed and reflected through huge windows and interior, ornate mirrors. The formal dining room and Terrace Restaurant both provide views down to Windermere and the picturesque gardens. Access to an exclusive jetty and slipway is also available.
With a National Trust owned folly, luxurious bedrooms, gastronomic extravaganzas prepared in the AA 2 rosette kitchens and an ornate classical bar rescued from Blackpool’s famous Winter Gardens, talking points abound at this hotel. Add to this the availability of the ‘ultimate picnic’ and this could be paradise on earth.
Thee star self-catering lodges in the landscaped, beech wooded grounds are another option, each with a private patio and picnic bench and sleeping between two and four.
Room prices run from £46-£92 per person per night for a house room, to £82-£164 pppn for the top luxury rooms. All rooms with a lake view carry a £12 per person supplement. Children under the age of 12 cannot stay in the hotel.
Self-catering lodges cost £605-£655 in high season. Visit www.elh.co.uk/hotels/storrshal l for more details.
3. Low Wood Hotel – With a Watersports Wow Factor
Located on Windermere’s shores this 4 star leisure and watersports focused accommodation provides one of the finest views of Windermere. With 110 rooms it is an excellent choice for a short break or family holiday.
Its facilities include 50-foot pool, hot spa, steam room, sauna, solarium, large fitness studio, dance studio and squash court. The watersports centre offers waterskiing, wake boarding, motorboat hire, pico and wayfarer sailing, canoeing, kayaking, climbing wall and bungee trampolining. There’s even an option to take balloon flights from Low Wood.
Low Wood is also the right choice for fishing enthusiasts, with access to some of the best coarse and game fishing in the UK. Fishermen can head out in search of a catch of wild brown trout, perch, roach and pike and even bag arctic char, using trolling spines and traditional boats. All that is needed is an NRA licence for the particular species fished for.
A stay at Low Wood costs between £48 and £96 for a house room, £53-£106 for a classic, £58-£116 for a feature room and £60-£120 for a luxury room.
Prices are per person per night for two adults sharing a twin or double room, including breakfast.
Visit www.elh.co.uk/hotels/lowwood for more details.
4. Langdale Chase Hotel – Rooms for Romantics
This country house hotel offers panoramic and inspirational views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding mountains and is located three miles north of Windermere and two miles south of Ambleside.
Six acres of wonderful, landscaped gardens stretch down to the lake shore and were designed by the acclaimed Thomas Henry Mawson. With one of the largest garden frontages on Windermere, many rooms benefit from a lake view.
Interior features date back as far as 1664 and fine oil paintings, ornate, carved fireplaces and magnificent oak staircase provide the wow factor.
The most romantic room is that over the boat house, in which couples can be lulled to sleep by the sound of gently lapping water.
With golf, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and walks on the doorstep, Langdale Chase is a true Windermere gem.
Visit www.langdalechase.co.uk for more details or call 015394 32201.
5. Lakeside Hotel – A Fabulous Relaxation Retreat
This former seventeenth century coaching inn with its oak panels, real fires, landscaped gardens and snug lounges is a haven for those wishing to unwind and relax.
Located at the southern end of Windermere at Lakeside, peace and privacy are the watchwords of this wonderful hotel, rich in Designers Guild fabrics and the promise of stunning lakeside views.
As well as offering a choice of 75 rooms, the Lakeside has two special accommodation options. The Boathouse thrills with a panoramic lounge, huge picture windows and the delight of sipping champagne on a private lake terrace. Picnic and champagne hampers can be provided and there is even the option of hiring a rowing boat for a truly romantic water-based excursion.
Executive Lodge Suites are a new departure to provide self-contained and private retreats, with superb facilities and fine food just a stroll away. Two separate suites each have an adjacent lounge, huge picture window, private sauna and lake patio frontage.
The tariff for rooms starts at £275 for a premium courtyard double or twin, with lake view rooms starting at £325. A lake view double with four-poster costs £355 (with a Jacuzzi in the room) whilst an executive, two-suite lodge costs £455.

Flybe Fills The National Express Void
July 15, 2009 on 6:23 am | In Airlines, Ireland, London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off
Record Sales On New Service From Leeds Bradford To London Gatwick After Yet More Bad News From Rail Operator
Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, today reported record sales on its new air service from Yorkshire to London.
In direct contrast to the chaos on the rail network, which today saw the government take the East Coast rail service into public ownership,
Flybe sold more tickets on June 30th than on any other day since the route was announced in April.
Commenting on the strong sales, Mike Rutter, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer said:
“The demand for tickets on Flybe’s new service from Leeds Bradford to London Gatwick has exceeded all expectations.
Flybe came to the rescue when BMI walked away from their Leeds to London air service and now it seems we are coming to the rescue of more and more Yorkshire travellers who have lost faith with the railways.
Transport links for the UK’s regional economies are crucial and Flybe is proud to provide convenient, affordable and reliable services for Yorkshire and London alike.”
