A Spa Is Born In Shanghai
September 28, 2009 on 1:30 pm | In Asia, China, Spa Resorts | Comments Off
There’s no telling what thoughts will dance through the mind in the wake of a spa treatment that combines the soft fluidity of dance-like moves inspired by the ancient martial art of T’ai Chi, gently stretching and preparing the body, before moving to the massage bed to begin a 3-hour journey to nirvadic bliss.
This is part of the White Tiger Autumn Rites, one of many distinctive spa therapies at Qin The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel www.fourseasons.com/shanghai
Qin, pro-nounced ‘chin’, which means to ‘affect deeply’, is an enclave from the bustling Shanghai city life and will most certainly affect deeply all that enter. Guests are first greeted by a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall lacquered door of aged elm wood reminiscence of the enormous imperial palace doors common in the early days of Chinese Dynasties.
Just within is a quietly stylish haven of textured black granite flooring, contemporary Chinese furniture and beautiful objets distinctive to the destination.
Qin The Spa occupies a sprawling 8,200sq. ft. space that includes nine treatment rooms, a private manicure and pedicure room, a reserved consultation space for acupuncture, and a separate domain for foot reflexology – a staple in Chinese wellness practices.
The spacious retail area boasts specially blended, labelled and branded Qin The Spa products – the first in a Four Seasons spa.
Developed in Indonesia, the products are designed to pair with each of the spa’s signature therapies. The full lists of products include body scrub, face and body mist, body balm, essential oils and skin and beauty care; are all-natural fruit and herb based, with no artifical colorings.
Each treatment room takes on a unique character, distinguished by richly ornate interiors and trigrams based off of the I Ching, which is eight symbols arranged in a hexagonal shape that signify the eight phenomena in the Universe; Sky, Earth, Thunder, Wind, Water (Moon), Fire (Sun), Mountain and Lake.
Menu and services at Qin The Spa are as distinctive as the aforementioned I Ching décor.
Bringing rituals of long ago into modern-day living, each treatment draws inspiration from ancient rites and healing methods based on the Four celestial seasonal guardians found in the birth of traditional Chinese medicine.
These include the Green Dragon Spring Rites which incorporates a foot massage with warmed bamboo sticks; the Red Phoenix Summer Rites, the
White Tiger Autumn Rites with artistic form T’ai Chi and meditation; and the Black Tortoise Winter Rites.
Also of note, is the Imperial Dragon Massage that uses warm poultices to prepare the body muscles for a detoxifying deep tissue treatment.

Malaysian Borneo’s award-winning new luxury villa estate resort, The Kudat Riviera, has added the cream of the culinary crop to its world-class team with the appointment of Dutch master Davy Minten as executive chef de cuisine. With extensive experience of heading up Michelin-starred kitchens in the Netherlands,

Opening in Sabah in Autumn 2009, The Kudat Riviera is a unique mixed-use development offering unparalleled seclusion and the ultimate in eco-friendly luxury, in stunning natural surroundings.
Along six kilometres of breathtaking virgin shorelines, hilltops and clifftops, paparazzi-proofed two- to six-bedroom villas nestle in their own private estates of up to eight acres each, including spectacular private infinity pool and manicured gardens.
The Kudat Riviera will be the ultimate exclusive resort for discerning travellers with an appreciation of the wonders of the natural world: With unrivalled marine and terrestrial biodiversity, the region offers extraordinary wildlife and rainforest experiences, and some of the most celebrated diving in the world.
Minten began his career with a traineeship at the one Michelin-starred Restaurant der Bloasbalg before taking up his first professional position as sous chef at another one Michelin-starred restaurant, the 400-cover Restaurant Chateau Neercanne in Maastricht.
After subsequently helping open the renowned Restaurant Cadel Biro, also in Maastricht, Minten moved on to the one Michelin-starred Chateau St. Gerlach, in Houthem-Valkenburg, where he was promoted within one year from sous chef to chef de cuisine. Minten’s responsibilities at this Small Luxury Hotel of the World included designing recipes and menus; managing the hotel’s several restaurants and banqueting operation; and heading up a team of 14 staff.
In 2004 Minten launched Sjiek Kookpunt VOF, two culinary outlets in Maastricht offering cookery classes, catering services and the sale of home-made products, before taking his entrepreneurial approach to the next level in 2006 with the opening of Cucina Mosae 100% Gusto BV, a 3,000sqm culinary emporium comprising 14 separate high-end food and beverage outlets and capable of hosting banqueting parties for up to 1,400 guests.
Supported by his 15-strong kitchen staff, Minten oversaw all of Cucina Mosae’s myriad delights, including a Mediterranean lunch restaurant; a fine patisserie and bakery; a specialist retail cookshop; and a comprehensive retail range of homemade food products, from marmalades to sauces to pastas.
Says Phil Dobson, chief executive officer of The Kudat Riviera’s operating and management company Exquisite Borneo Villas, “Davy brings passion, flair, and a wealth of expertise in delivering top class, bespoke culinary experiences in anything from exclusive one-on-one to large scale banqueting contexts. N.Y.’s The Pierre New Suites
September 28, 2009 on 11:20 am | In East Coast, New York City | Comments Off
The Pierre, the iconic hotel on New York’s Central Park at Fifth Avenue and 61st Street, has completed the final phase of a $100 million renovation with the opening of 11 new Grand Suites, including the Presidential Suite.
The Pierre, the U.S. flagship for Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, now offers 189 residential-style guest rooms, including 49 suites. First-floor public areas were reconfigured to accommodate a reception area and Two E, a lounge and bar that serves light plates, afternoon tea and classic cocktails in what was the original reading room.
A new restaurant will open next month; Le Caprice is the first location outside of London that will serve European favorites.
Fine arts consultant Mortimer Chatterjee, a former Christie’s U.K. auction house executive turned Mumbai gallery owner, selected artwork to complement the guestroom and lobby designs.
Three new boardrooms, one with video teleconferencing equipment, now adjoin the business center on the fourth floor and can accommodate meetings of up to 75.
The hotel’s banquet spaces on the second floor can accommodate private events for up to 1,500 guests and were extensively restored in 2007 as part of the first phase of renovations.
The 11 one- and two-bedroom Grand Suites are the hotel’s most premier spaces.
Each features its own look, with custom furnishings, hand-crafted finishes and details such as silk and brocade fabrics,
Murano glass chandeliers and hand-knotted carpets. They also feature Bang & Olufsen audio and Sony home theater systems and high-speed wired and wireless Internet connections. Subtle touches reflect the Indian heritage of Taj Hotels: Jewel tones and traditional decorative motifs pay homage to the royal Rajput dynasties that created the palaces in India now welcoming Taj guests, while contemporary artwork showcases Indian artists. In addition, many suites feature hand-colored wood engravings that depict various historic scenes of New York.
