The Duke, A Wife And A Lover – Hazlitt’s Unveils First Night Packages
October 31, 2009 on 7:00 am | In London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales, Weddings Honeymoons | Comments OffHazlitt’s have unveiled a first night package sure to set any couple off in the right direction on their wedding day!
Situated in a quiet backwater off Soho Square, the discreet townhouse bolthole is a refuge from modern London. Dating back to 1718, Hazlitt’s has been meticulously restored and crafted, offering guests world class facilities and service.
Quaint staircases, exquisite antiques and oil paintings are subtly married with today’s technology with each room taking its name from a famous, and indeed infamous, local resident. Individually designed spacious bathrooms offer guests a unique experience; from luxuriating in a roll-top bath with sumptuous unctions and lotions to the invigoration of the painstakingly restored bathing machine.
First nighters looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience can choose from the Duke of Monmouth or Mrs Teresa Cornelys. The duplex suites at the top of the Frith Street townhouse reflect the individual characters of their namesakes.
The Duke of Monmouth suite’s masculine undertones draw on rich hues, oak panelling and voluminous curtains.
The suite’s private roof garden with its fully retracting roof is an ideal place to stargaze and lose yourself in the intimacy of the moment. Mrs Teresa Cornelys, a lover of Casanova, offers guests a more frivolous and flirtatious environment guaranteed to set the tone for the evening!
Hazlitt’s first night packages have been designed to offer the ultimate in pampering, a cocoon far from the bustle of metropolitan life.
After a hectic day’s wedding celebrations, guests are shown to their chosen room where the bed is strewn with petals, while mugs of luxurious hot chocolate are the ideal enticement for a night between the sheets.
Breakfast in bed, the following day is, of course, a pre-requisite with a bottle of champagne marking the first day of the couple’s life together.
Caroline Conaty, CEO, said: “Our first night packages are ideal to get those nuptial notions off to the right start! Hazlitt’s is a very unique hotel and is sure to be a memory that all of our guests will remember forever.”
• Duke of Monmouth
James Scott was born the illegitimate son of Charles II. He was recognised by Charles as his son but the King did not make him his heir, instead bestowing on him the title, Duke of Monmouth. He built Monmouth House in Soho Square. The buildings that make up Hazlitt’s were built on part of the site of the house after it was demolished.
After the death of his father, the King, Monmouth led a rebellion against his uncle and declared himself King. He lost the battle of Sedgemoor where he was captured. He was beheaded on Tower Hill. It is said it took eight blows of the axe to sever his head.
• Mrs Teresa Cornelys
Originally from Vienna, she toured the courts of Europe as an opera singer. She was a lover of Casanova, by whom she had a child. She lived at Carlisle House in Soho Square and gave extravagant Masquerade Balls for which she became famous. She eventually fell from grace and died a debtor in Fleet prison.
