Crosby Street Hotel in New York City

October 26, 2009 on 7:48 am | In East Coast, Hotels, New York City | Comments Off

The Crosby Street Hotel, the newest member of Design Hotels in the Americas, is now open.

This is the first overseas venture for husband and wife team Tim and Kit Kemp, owners of London-based Firmdale Hotels. Kit Kemp has conceived 40 different design schemes for 86 bedrooms and suites, creating a hotel unlike any other in New York City.

The 11-story hotel was built from the ground up with the aim to achieve Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, and the result is an eco-luxe gem in the heart of New York’s vibrant SoHo.

The Crosby Bar offers food and drinks throughout the day. Seasonal produce like strawberries, heirloom tomatoes and lettuces will come from the rooftop kitchen garden. In addition, an area of the garden will be rotated yearly with a 10-chicken coop.

A patio also provides a green oasis for outdoor dining. Guests can enjoy afternoon tea or the sculpture garden. Descending the oak stairs from the lobby leads into an area for private event spaces.

New York City Explorer Pass: NYC Attractions
A boldly colored open reception area with bright Peter Rocklin paintings leads into three interconnecting private dining and meeting rooms.

The Crosby Street Hotel Screening Room, a state-of-the-art private cinema, is a stunning space with 99 orange leather Poltrona Frau chairs and walls padded in violet wool. Rooms and suites, many with views of downtown Manhattan, come fully equipped with a flat-screen LCD television, DVD/CD player, iPod docking station, Wi-Fi, fully-stocked mini-bar and personal safe.

Bathrooms are executed in light gray granite, oak and glass, and are outfitted with rain showers — some also feature oversized bathtubs.

The bath products have been created by Miller Harris exclusively for the hotel. A true American woodland meadow, featuring an array of more than 50 native flowering plants, has been planted on the terrace of room 203, affectionately called “The Meadow Suite.”

Though accessible only to those who book the suite, the meadow provides all guests a soothing view. The flowering plants will blossom in stages throughout the seasons, creating a colorful and vibrant green space.

This is not the only green feature of the hotel — Crosby Street plans to attain Gold LEED certification by the US Green Building Council.

The hotel’s ecological responsibility ranges from use of regional or recycled building materials to green power, water use reduction and education of guests.

Tips for Staying in Shape On the Road

http://community.priorityclub.com

Some folks bring home unwanted souvenirs from a trip – extra weight. One traveler says he brings an extra three pounds, settling in on the hips after traveling. Junk food, gourmet dining, glasses of wine and desserts all add to great fun, but several travelers pay for it when the buttons don’t button and the zippers don’t zip.
There is no silver bullet to beat the weight, however there are some traveling fitness tips you can incorporate during your travels to help you maintain your weight.

o Pack exercise clothes as a source of motivation. Seeing the clothes makes you feel guilty for slacking off while traveling, and you almost have to find some sort of physical activity to burn those calories.

o Walk around to the local sites and shops as much as possible. This is a great way to get out of the hotel and on your feet, plus you get to explore the places you are traveling.

o Use the hotel gym. If the hotel does not have a gym, try to find a gym close by and walk there. Make the gym a daily part of your life, while traveling and at home. Plan your day accordingly and exercise for at least 30 minutes and you will be able to stay in shape.

o Plan your meals ahead of time. Even though you’re traveling, that doesn’t give you a “free pass” to deviate from your diet. Always eat breakfast in order to jumpstart your metabolism, and eat at least one piece of fruit and some sort of protein rather than just grabbing a cup of coffee and heading out the door. This will not only help your diet, but you will also feel better on your traveling adventures.

o After breakfast, be sure to always carry some sort of healthy snack, like unsalted peanuts, to keep you satisfied during the day. Eat a healthy lunch and try to eat a later lunch so that you will eat a lighter dinner. Also, avoid alcoholic beverages and the desserts, no matter how tempting they look.

Incorporating these tips into your daily routine could help you to stay slim and fit while traveling, making those buttons easier to button and the zippers easier to zip.

Take A Bite Out of Vacation Costs

October 26, 2009 on 6:35 am | In Adventure Travel, Hotels | Comments Off

When planning a vacation, there can be several stressful financial factors leading to the actual trip, like how to afford the trip and expenses that could occur during travel. However, many experienced travelers have shared advice on how to alleviate the burden of worrying about finances. Here is a compilation of some of their best cost-reducing tips:

• Plan, Plan, Plan: There is no substitution for planning. Experienced travelers agree that shopping around for the best deals on the Internet is the most effective way to reduce vacation costs. People should research every aspect of a potential trip and compare the cost of each segment (air, hotel, rental car, etc.), and continue to check rates even after making a reservation, one traveler suggests. People that are proactive in the early stages of planning usually find the very best deals.

• Look For The Best Deals: Consider calling the hotels directly to inquire about discounts. Another great idea is to sign-up for email notices of sales and promotions from online travel sites, and be flexible with your travel dates when your destination goes on sale or runs a special promotion, recommends one traveler.

• Bring Food and Money: After scheduling for the vacation, people should consider bringing a cooler full of favorite foods and drinks when traveling by car to reduce or even eliminate the cost of dining out. Another tip is to avoid ATM fees by taking cash out at grocery stores. Many grocery and drug stores enable you to request some cash back with the each purchase (even when purchasing just a pack of gum, bottle of water or soft drink). Consider visiting local grocery stores to buy foods that are easy to store and prepare in your hotel room rather than dining out.

• Be Loyal: Frequent travelers are even planning to use their airline and hotel loyalty program points to defer their travel cost. A few even mention redeeming points for gift cards to gas stations, restaurants, and national retail chain stores, such as Target and Wal-Mart, for use on their trips. This will help cut costs in other areas.

• Bundle Packages: If your travels take you overseas to Europe, consider taking a cruise. Cruises typically offer an all-inclusive type package and may provide more “bang for your buck”, which should be considered given current exchange rates.

• Consider Alternative Routes: Several travelers recommended flying to a major European hub to connect to your final European destination on Europe’s low-cost airlines (RyanAir, Easy Jet, etc.). The trains in Europe are another convenient and economical way to travel to your destination.

Whether the travels takes you on a road trip across the States or overseas in Europe, planning and researching for the best deals in addition to cutting basic costs with the tips from experienced travelers, you’ll be able to vacation without worrying about finances.
