The Wild Beast Lives In LA

The Wild Beast is completed and ready for action at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Valencia campus. Named after “wild beast,” a term used by Morton Feldman to describe the illusive space in a work of art between surface and subject, this innovative new music pavilion serves as an outdoor performance space and an air-tight concert and classroom venue.

A rolling wall allows the 3,200-square-foot structure to transform from an acoustically refined recital hall, which can accommodate 140, into an outdoor performance space — described as a “mini Hollywood Bowl” — for audiences of up to 1,000.

The Wild Beast will begin housing recitals, rehearsals and classes for the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts this fall.

Made necessary by the school’s increasing enrollment, the $4 million construction cost was funded through the generosity of donors to the Campaign for CalArts.
