W Paris-Opera Hotel in France
November 16, 2009 on 7:28 am | In France, Hotels, Paris | Comments OffRockwell Group Europe has teamed up with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide to design the W Paris-Opéra, W Hotels’ debut in France. Diego Gronda, managing and creative director of RGe, the Madrid satellite office of New York’s Rockwell Group founded by David Rockwell, is leading the design team on this project scheduled to open in 2011.
Owned by Barcelona-based Meridia Capital, the hotel occupies an elegant 1870s Haussman-era building located across the street from the Opéra Garnier and near Galeries Lafayette and Place Vendome in the 9th Arrondissement.
Taking the inspiration from combining New York’s energy, where the W brand began in 1998, and Paris, the “City of Light,” Rockwell Group is flooding the new W Hotel with illumination and color. The 19th century building with original neo-classical interior will infuse light and mutating color.
The ground level and mezzanine floors have views of the Opéra and provide a signature W Living Room. Along with a new modern concept restaurant, W Paris-Opéra will feature a destination bar, fitness facility and 90 guest rooms.
An oversized undulating wall of light is the central design feature that defines the building from the inside and from the street as it weaves through the public spaces, secret corners of DJ booths and martini bars, through the corridors and finally into each guest room.
This programmable wall of light can transform based on season, event or time of day to create a festive and celebratory atmosphere, bringing the historic building to life with sophistication and a glowing vibrancy.
This central feature initiates a dynamic dialogue with the street, introducing people to the magic of the W Hotel before they enter and are dazzled by the dramatic vaulted ceiling supported by ornate Corinthian columns.
To invite guests and locals to the W brand’s world of Wow, Rockwell Group will add life to this historic space with an innovative installation of projected images from nature upon arrival that will change throughout the day.
Guest rooms and suites, including W Hotels’ Wow suites and Extreme Wow suites (W Hotels’ take on the traditional Presidential Suite), feature three-meter ceiling height and breathtaking views of the Opéra.
All W suites will boast an existing fireplace, white marble bathrooms and oversized dressing rooms, the perfect place for guests to prepare for a night out in Europe’s fashion capital.

Cape Town’s Cape Grace Enlivens Menu at Signal Restaurant
November 16, 2009 on 6:56 am | In , Africa, Beachbooker, Dine Drink, South Africa | Comments Off
Cape Town’s Cape Grace hotel is putting a fresh spin on menus at the hotel’s year-old restaurant, Signal. Chef Malika van Reenen is enhancing its signature Cape Malay-spiced cuisine and is breathing new life into both the a la carte and special chef’s tasting menus at Signal. On the new dinner menu, starters range from smoked crocodile niçoise with quail’s egg, marinated fine beans, potato wafers and olive tapenade to pate of smoked snoek, melba toast and apricot chutney. Main courses similarly combine local ingredients and culinary traditions with an international fine-dining flair, resulting in offerings such as lentil and butternut bobotie with cinnamon roasted sweet potato, cucumber, chili and pinenut salad with minted yogurt and Malay-spiced ostrich with saffron cream potato, braised red cabbage and roasted coriander jus. Signal has also introduced a brand-new “Simply Fresh From the Sea” menu with diners creating their own fresh seafood platters from a choice of giant tiger prawns, langoustines, whole crayfish, fresh local fish, squid and steamed mussels — all grilled, basted with fresh herbs and lemon, and paired with a selection of sauces that includes lime hollandaise, smoked tomato and sweet chili.
And in the Cape Grace library, where guests relax with a good book and a complimentary glass of port, Van Reenen has also launched two new buffet menus.
Each day from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests can sample the Cape Grace soup buffet which might include roasted turnip and spicy apple soup or pea, mint and ham soup, along with fresh-baked breads.
And from 3 to 6 p.m. each afternoon, Van Reenen’s sugar buffet of housemade confectionary treats includes meringues, pink and white marshmallow squares, toffee apples and pistachio-laden chocolate fudge washed down, perhaps, with a glass of Graham Beck rose and augmented by hot Malay-spiced savory snacks.
