The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is coming to the UK in January and February 2010, with eight events planned across the country.

Tour events will take place in more than 280 communities and 30 different countries, underlining the global popularity of mountain culture and activities.

One of the largest and most prestigious mountain festivals in the world, the Banff Mountain Film Festival features a collection of thought-provoking films, with subject matter ranging from remote landscapes and cultures to adrenaline-packed action sports. Exhilarating and provocative, its 2010 World Tour is a must-see for mountain enthusiasts and those with a spirit of adventure.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is produced by Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, and features award-winning films and audience favourites from approximately 300 films entered in the annual festival in Banff.

The festival itself began in 1976 and features what many regard as the world’s best footage on mountain subjects. Every year the Banff Centre receives hundreds of hopeful entries, which are narrowed down until only the very best films on Mountain Culture remain.

In 1986, the Banff Centre began an outreach programme to bring the tour to other communities across the world, and so the Banff Mountain Film World Tour was born.

UK tour dates are as follows:

• 29 January Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow
• 3 and 4 February Union Chapel, Islington, London
• 6 February Theatre By The Lake, Keswick
• 11 February Komedia Club, Brighton
• 13 February Dancehouse Theatre, Manchester
• 18 February Carriageworks Theatre, Leeds
• 20 February Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan

“Each festival event is so much more than a film night – it is a social evening where outdoor adventure lovers of all kinds come together to celebrate mountain culture through inspirational short films, with the chance to win some great prizes too,” says Simon Piper of UK tour promoter Nineteen Fifty Three.

“The festival attracts a wide range of people around the world – from those who love to hang from a rope or throw themselves down a mountain with a parachute or skis to those who are happy to enjoy these activities from the safety of their armchairs.”

The UK leg of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is being sponsored by World Expeditions, a world leader in small group trekking and adventure holidays. Focusing on genuine ‘off the beaten track’ experiences with an emphasis on travelling responsibly, World Expeditions offers groundbreaking adventures in the Himalaya, Europe, Asia, Australasia, the Polar regions, Africa and South, Central and North America, but is best-known for its trekking and climbing options in Nepal.
