Moonlight walk in Aruba

Sun-kissed Aruba is to show its darker side of life – with a unique full moon walking tour through its Arikok National Park.

The monthly Moonlight Walks are guided by local tour operator Sensitive Hikers and venture deep into the Dutch Caribbean island’s desert-like cunucu (countryside) to discover curious shapes and shadows cast by the moonlit cacti and rock formations.

If walkers are lucky they may hear the eerie hoot of the Shoco, a species of burrowing owl found only in Aruba.

Arikok National Park is home to a number of indigenous species of wildlife, flora and fauna characteristic of Aruba’s unique tropical desert climate. The 12.5 square mile Park, which makes up 18 per cent of the total land mass of the island, unveiled in July the results of its three-year €7.1-million infrastructure upgrade, which saw the modernisation of its roads and paths and the creation of a new visitors’ centre at the park entrance.

Historical sites also found within the park’s boundaries include Aruba’s famous caves, Fontein and Quadarikiri, which feature ancient Cacquetío Indian paintings.

The Moonlight Walks take place only under a full moon.
