Backroads, which first offered biking itineraries among the grand châteaux of the Loire Valley 22 years ago, is offering more than 50 active itineraries in 17 European countries, designed to showcase the distinctive character of each region.

New to the Backroads European roster in 2010 is Dordogne and Bordeaux Biking, highlighted by prehistoric cave paintings at Font du Gaume, the fortified village of St-Émilion (whose history dates back to the Second Century) and bike rides among world-famous Grand Cru vineyards.

On the new Spain Biking trip, cyclists journey from Barcelona to the Pyrénées and on to Costa Brava, with hearty climbs in the mountains, peaceful rides alongside miles of Mediterranean beaches, Catalan cuisine and Salvador Dali’s art.

The new Portugal Biking trip takes Backroads travelers from the region’s pastoral heartland to the Douro Valley, famed for its port wine, while showcasing Roman ruins, Peneda-Gerês National Park and Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal.

Perennial favorites include biking and multisport trips along Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast;

a biking journey off the beaten path in Hungary, Slovakia and Poland;

a trio of itineraries in Ireland;

walking and hiking in the Czech Republic and Austria;

multisport and hiking trips in Switzerland;

as well as an assortment in Tuscany, in sunny Provence and in Puglia on the Adriatic coast. Clients are offered a choice of Premiere or Casual Inns Trips.
