The Sky Steward

March 3, 2010 on 8:26 am | In Airlines | Comments Off

Access 500 airport loungesMiami resident, Gailen David is best known as “The Sky Steward”. With more than 30 years of experience in the airlines and travel industry, he is the “Go-To” guy for travel qualms and advice.

His passion for aviation emerged at the young age of six when Gailen took his very first independent flight to his grandmother’s house.

At the age of 10, Gailen was already featured by Travel Weekly (Nov. 14, 1977 edition) for his ambitious role as an amateur travel agent.

The headline read, “At age 10, boy’s hobby as amateur agent may be first step on road to a career in travel.”

Gailen’s future could not have been predicted any better than by that headline. In 1985 Gailen began his career as an official travel agent.

From there he joined American Airlines as a flight attendant. After spending many years in the air, Gailen took time off from “being up in the clouds” and eventually came back to the airline’s industry with a positive attitude and one goal in mind – to promote a more civilized air travel experience.

For three years, Gailen served as a Development Consultant for American Airlines, where he travelled the world educating other flight attendants about proper protocol and customer service. Currently, Gailen serves as a purser (lead flight attendant) with American Airlines, welcoming first class passengers and managing in-flight services overall.

When Gailen isn’t in the sky he’s on the ground as “The Sky Steward”. Gailen’s professional and expert experience as a flight attendant led to the creation of a widely visited blog known as, Dear Sky Steward.

In 2007 Gailen formed Sky Steward (www.dearskysteward.com ), an online resource and forum for travelers.

The site provides industry analysis and expert opinions regarding travel, customer service, the airline industry, airfares, in-flight service and airport related topics.

Sky Steward also serves as a resource for several national media outlets, including USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, and Fox news. Gailen was also recently selected to be the featured radio host on www.BlogTalkRadio.com

In addition to Gailen’s success as “The Sky Steward”, he is also the creator of Jetiquette™, an award winning program that promotes a more civilized air travel experience.

The program received the Magellan Award from Travel Weekly Magazine for training excellence. He is also the author of “Jetiquette…The Customer Experience and You.”

Gailen attended Kennesaw State University and is a certified public speaking trainer. He is also a Facilitator at The Protocol School of Washington. When Gailen is not advocating for proper in-flight customer service and providing helpful travel tips on his blog, www.dearskysteward.com, he’s traveling to favorite destinations such as the Amalfi Coast of Italy.

Khmer Cuisine In The Cambodian Countryside

March 2, 2010 on 9:25 pm | In Adventure Travel, Asia, Cambodia, Dine Drink | Comments Off

Further enhancing its burgeoning reputation for championing authentic Khmer cuisine, local ingredients and traditional flavours, Hôtel de la Paix has created a unique and beautiful gazebo in the spectacular countryside outside Siem Reap, where guests can enjoy a romantic, torch-lit modern take on the traditional Khmer barbecue.

Surrounded by rolling rice fields, cocooned by the scents of lemongrass and frangipani, a private chef serves a fresh menu of mouth-watering barbecued dishes, from prawn with crushed fresh kampot peppercorn to quail with star anis and wild honey.

Bursting with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and traditional Khmer influences, this gourmet menu was created by Hôtel de la Paix’s executive chef Joannes Riviere – founder of the Siem Reap Chef Association and author of the first French language Khmer cookbook ever published. French-born Riviere is fluent in the Khmer language and has made their cuisine his specialism.

Having first relocated to Cambodia for voluntary work in 2003, his intimate knowledge of, and passion for the Cambodian people and their culture infuses his innovative menu designs.

This absorbing new culinary experience begins in authentic style with a short 15 minute journey from the hotel by traditional Tuk Tuk, passing through the buzzing streets of Siem Reap and out into the quietude of the real, rural Cambodia – a picturesque countryside punctuated by rice paddies, clusters of stilted houses, pagodas and water buffalo.
