The city of Denver has launched the B-cycle Bike sharing program. About 500 new, red Trek bicycles are now available for sharing at 40 stations around the city.

Each of the three-speed bikes comes with a wire basket, a built-in light and a lock. Denver visitors can purchase a $5, 24-hour membership with a credit card at any B-cycle station.

After becoming a member, riders can pick up a B-cycle from any station and drop it off at any other station. All rides of 30 minutes or less are free, and rides up to one hour coat $1, with prices going up from there.

Starting in June, the Denver B-cycle bikes will be equipped with RFID chips and computers to track mileage, calories burned and carbon offsets.

Users can also sign up for seven-day ($20), 30-day ($30) or annual memberships ($65) online.

Discounts are available for students and seniors.

Once registered in the system as a member, there is no charge for the first 30 minutes every time the member checks out a B-cycle from a station.

After 30 minutes additional usage fees apply that escalate every half hour thereafter.

Bike stations are located downtown near hotels, on the 16th Street Mall, by museums, at the Colorado Convention Center, in parks and at shopping centers. Other stations are located in nearby neighborhoods like LoHi, LoDo, Highlands, Cherry Creek North, the Golden Triangle Museum District and Old South Pearl Street.

Special Hotels in England and Hungary

April 26, 2010 on 7:30 am | In Hotels, Hungary, London, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Two of Special Hotels of the World member hotels are reopening.

The Lakeside Hotel, The Lake District, Cumbria, U.K. (www.ghotw.com/lakeside ) has reopened its doors following three months of refurbishment owing to unprecedented floods which forced its closure last November, and the Uhu Villa Suites in Budapest (www.ghotw.com/uhu-villa ).

Located on the banks of Lake Windermere, the majority of the Lakeside Hotel’s ground floor rooms and kitchens were overwhelmed by flood water as the lake level unusually rose by nine feet after two days of torrential rain.

The hotel management used the opportunity to better guest experience by enhancing the property.

New elements include dramatic chandeliers, rich-hued wall-papers, a new kitchen, the upgrading of bedrooms and en-suite facilities and the exposure of the original 17th century cobbled floor in Ruskin’s Bar.

The Uhu Villa Suites, previously known as Uhu Villas, recently reopened after 12 months of extensive renovations.

The renovation of the property, which is situated close to the city center overlooking the Buda Valley, now offers four room types, including studio apartments, suitable for business travelers or shorter stays, and one-, two- and three-bed apartments suitable for longer stays or families.

All of these apartments have fully equipped kitchens and separate bedrooms.

Long Beach’s Aquarium of the Pacific Earth-Friendly Garden

April 26, 2010 on 6:45 am | In California, Los Angeles, Theme Parks Zoos Aquariums | Comments Off

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Calif., will open a 4,700-square-foot Earth-Friendly Garden on its front lawn on Earth Day, April 22.

Illustrating part of the solution to the ongoing water shortage, the garden features native and drought-resistant plants, as well as a water-efficient irrigation system.

The drip irrigation system is connected to a weather-based irrigation.

This watering technique is proven to reduce water usage by at least 50 percent compared with traditional sprinkler systems.

The weather-based irrigation controller customizes the watering schedule automatically based on the local weather conditions. All of the plants are easy to grow and can be found at local garden centers and nurseries.

The garden is made possible by grant funding from the United States Bureau of Reclamation and a partnership with the Long Beach Water Department.
