AYANA Hong Kong Wine Therapy Products
May 15, 2010 on 7:55 pm | In Asia, China, Spa Resorts | Comments Off
From reducing heart disease to decreasing the risk of kidney stones, doctors often attribute a moderate amount of red wine to many beneficial health effects. Now you can enjoy another form of these benefits at Thermes Marins Bali, with the unique Wine Body Treatment and Wine Facial, which use an exclusive line of wine-based cosmetics to promote more youthful and beautiful skin.
Both treatments use the Enologist series of wine therapy developed in Hokkaido, Japan. First discovered by renowned Japanese sommelier Makoto Abe, together with the research team at Tokyo University of Science, these organic products have been scientifically proven to reduce the signs of ageing.
They include cleansing oil, masque, and essential massage oil made from grapeseed extract, which is regarded as nature’s most powerful anti-oxidant with a high content of Vitamin C.
The main ingredients are wine dregs leftover from the mashed grapes during the winemaking process, which can only be obtained at wineries; proanthocyanidin, a natural anti-oxidant; and ELGS complexes which contain various nutrients that are byproducts of winemaking such as grape flesh, grape seed oil, grape juice, grape leaf extracts, glucoses, tartaric acid, wine and grapevine extract.
“The culture of drinking wine for health has been cultivated for so many centuries and dated back to 6000 BC, so it was only a matter of time before we discovered the aesthetic benefits of wine,” said Michi Sonoda, the Director of Thermes Marins Bali. “We are delighted to be the only spa in south-east Asia to offer this innovative and highly effective Wine Therapy.”
The 75-minute Wine Body Treatment (US$90++ per person) begins with a Grape Skin Cleansing Oil body massage, before a Grape Masque body wrap to infuse your skin with the heat and scent of the wine. The technique of the massage is specially designed to enhance the absorption of nutrients into the skin as well as to relax the body and mind.
The 45-minute Wine Facial (USD80++ per person) uses grapeseed products to restore suppleness, enhance circulation and eliminate toxins.
These treatments add to the existing Mellow Wine Therapy couple’s package available exclusively at Thermes Marins Bali.
This 2-hour treatment (US$700++ per couple, or US$400++ per person) includes a body massage, body wrap and gentle face massage with the application of Grape Skin Cleansing Oil, Grape Masque and Grape Essence.
The treatment ends with the ultimate decadence, as your therapist pours French wine straight from the bottle into a flower bath for you and your partner to literally bathe yourself in the miraculous power of wine!

Vietnam’s Oldest Restaurant Welcomes Its Newest Chef
May 15, 2010 on 7:46 pm | In Airlines, Beachbooker, Dine Drink, Vietnam | Comments Off
A Parisian chef who cut his first teeth in Asia at the Raffles Hotel Singapore joined the kitchen crew this week at Le Beaulieu, the oldest running restaurant in Vietnam.
Denis Groison’s appointment as chef de cuisine is part of a larger effort by the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi to enhance its standing as one of the Asia’s greatest French restaurants.
Having been in operation since 1901, in the exact same place within the iconic hotel, Le Beaulieu reigns as the hotel’s flagship restaurant and is a complement to Spices Garden, a traditional Vietnamese eatery, and Angelina, a recently launched Italian restaurant that cultivates 21st Century chic.
“As Hanoi celebrates its 1,000-year history, we’re making investments in our own substantial history,” said Kai Speth, general manager of the hotel. “Le Beaulieu is a great French restaurant. We’re now wondering why we shouldn’t be known as the greatest French restaurant in all Asia.”
Groison is likely to help the cause. Prior to his year-long stint as chef de cuisines at the Raffles Grill, Groison was chef de cuisine at Le Dôme du Marais in Paris. He also served as sous chef at an establishment awarded two stars by the Michelin Guide, the Restaurant Guy Lassausaie.
He was chef at a brasserie in Paris, Le Café Doucet, and he grew up working in his family’s pâtisserie-confiserie, L’Arlequin.
All this was but preparation, says Groison, for the assignment he embarks upon this week.
“For as long as I’ve been cooking, I have been steering toward Vietnam,” said Groison. “Perhaps it’s the country’s association with France. Perhaps it’s the enormously rich culinary heritage. I’m not sure. But I am sure Le Beaulieu is exactly the place to be.”
About Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi
Opened in 1901, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi reigns as the Grande Dame of Vietnamese hospitality and one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic hotels. In 2009, the hotel became the first in the Sofitel portfolio to acquire Accor’s Legend brand distinction.
The 364-room hotel was completely renovated in June 2009. Its historic Metropole Wing features suites named for Charlie Chaplin, Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene, each of whom ‘stopped’ at the Metropole during his time in colonial Indochina. The hotel’s restaurants include Spices Garden (Vietnamese), Le Beaulieu (French) and Angelina (Italian). Le Spa du Metropole opened in late 2009 and immediately set a new standard for nostalgic elegance in Vietnam.

Cambodia Banteay Chhmar Temple Re-Discovered
May 15, 2010 on 7:04 pm | In Adventure Travel, Asia, Cambodia | Comments OffIn the far northwestern corner of Cambodia the looted Angkorian temple of Banteay Chhmar sits teetering on the brink of a revival.
The bas-reliefs along the surrounding wall of the temple are some of the finest in Cambodia, and the temple is often compared to the more well known Angkor Thom in size and structure…
The Banteay Chhmar temple project is a perfect example of how the Global Heritage Fund works with local communities to build sustainable tourist infrastructure…
However change will come. A sealed road is planned to start construction this year with a completion date hovering around 2012. The temple of Banteay Chhmar will then be only a mere hour-and-a-half drive from Siem Reap or Battambang, opening up the day-trip potential…

Hullett House Heritage Hotel Hong Kong
May 15, 2010 on 6:57 pm | In Asia, China | Comments Off
The design-led, all suite heritage hotel that occupies the upper floors of Hullett House offers guests a refined and elegant experience that is reminiscent of Hong Kong’s vibrant past. Conveniently located on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, in a magnificent white-stucco colonial building dating from 1881, Hullett House provides a collection of bespoke, individually hand-crafted suites that join the property’s five popular dining and entertainment venues in this elegant celebration of old Hong Kong.
The suites, which range in size from 800 to 1,100 square feet, feature spacious private terraced balconies and breathtaking views of Hong Kong’s famous skyline, with sweeping lawns and gardens below.
Each suite is individually designed to reflect a distinct period in Hong Kong’s history and is named after one of Hong Kong’s numerous bays, in homage to the building’s history as the former Marine Police headquarters.
Owned and managed by aqua restaurant group, the hotel and suites were personally designed by David Yeo, the group’s founder and managing director. Yeo says Hullett House is the group’s “passion project” and one which he describes as a “gift of old Hong Kong, for the people of new Hong Kong.”
Particularly inspired by Hong Kong’s colonial influences and the Regency Era where King George IV first explored the concept of Chinoiserie, Yeo designed each of the suites to be conceptually distinct but evocative of the blend between Hong Kong’s Chinese and English past.
“I want to offer our guests a truly unique Hong Kong experience in one of the city’s most stunning heritage buildings; one they won’t get in a modern business hotel and one they’ll want to tell their family and friends about when they go back home,” Yeo explains.
“Since each of the suites is individually designed to reflect a different period in Hong Kong’s rich and colourful history, every time a guest stays with us their experience will be different and unique.”
The Casam Suite, a contemporary ode to Hong Kong’s growing pop art market, draws upon boldly coloured paintings and larger than life statues to deliver a high energy and invigorating visual experience.
A painting sequence of Mao Tse Tung chewing bubble gum and a large white sculpture of a handstand-holding pig are just a couple examples of the many modern Chinese art-inspired pieces that lend to the whimsical feeling of the room.
Over 800 sq ft in size, and featuring the largest bathroom of all the suites, Casam offers a progressive, imaginative feel that contrasts distinctly with the elegant, colonial exterior of Hullett House.
Soft green walls, birdcages and delicately hand-painted bamboo and birds feature on the walls of the Stanley Suite, creating a warm feeling reminiscent of the English countryside.
The bedroom leads directly on to the suite’s private verandah, with views across Hong Kong’s skyline and harbour. The room itself houses a preserved fireplace.
The birdcages reflect old Hong Kong teahouse culture, and the birds represent 26 species native to Southern China and Hong Kong. The bathroom of this suite is an elegant blend of soft green and white, with a large bathtub and standing rain shower, contributing to the suite’s idyllic pastoral landscape.
Inspired by David Yeo’s first impressions of Hong Kong’s antique shops found along Hollywood Road, the Shek O Suite is entirely outfitted with Chinese red lacquer furnishings with delicate gold accents.
An allusion to the classic Hong Kong Chinese antique furniture found in well-to-do Hong Kong homes, the rich pairing of gold and red in Shek O is found in one of the House’s impressively large corner suites.
Located on the second floor, this room also features striking red lacquered floors and a spacious bathroom with a claw foot freestanding bathtub and a large rain shower.
Billowing white lace curtains, elegant Louis XIV white furniture and hand-crafted wood paneling make the Silvermine suite one that oozes romance and sensuality, making it perfect for newly weds and others who are seeking some romance. The suite has two private sunny terraces that overlook the harbour, the city skyline and the lawns below.
The largest suite, Lido, is an indulgent manifestation of bold black and gold, and is fashioned with classic Chinese black lacquer furniture, balanced by fine gold accents.
This elegant corner suite, which has access to three balconies, has an impressive bathroom where a claw foot, free standing bathtub sits atop a shimmering gold tile floor.
Even with its colonial exterior and historically inspired design, the hotel has all the modern and technical in-room facilities of a contemporary hotel including large LCD TVs, DVD players, iPod stations and wireless broadband. Suites also feature modern and spacious bathrooms featuring large-head rain showers and chandeliers hanging over the bathtub, summed up by Yeo as “the ultimate luxury.”
Published rates range from HK$9,000 to HK$12,000 per night (plus 10% service charge), including Continental Breakfast for two at The Parlour. However, to celebrate the opening, Hullett House has created a series of Heritage Offers which bring added luxury and value to guests who want to experience this unique property from now until 30th June this year. (See attached for details).
