Cunard Forms Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company

July 22, 2010 on 8:02 am | In comedy, Cruise Boats, London, United Kingdom, Webbandstand | Comments Off

Cunard’s has formed the Queen Elizabeth Theatre Company that will be introduced with the new Queen Elizabeth oceanliner in October.

The company will include 29 singers, dancers, actors and musicians who will perform in the Royal Court Theatre.

The company will present a variety of musical productions and abridged versions of plays such as a Neil Simon triple bill and Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.”

The Simon show will feature three scenes, one each from some of the playwright’s best-loved shows — “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” “Plaza Suite” and “The Odd Couple” — each linked by their setting in an apartment or hotel suite.

At the conclusion of each show is a Q&A session with the actors. “Slice of Saturday Night” is the largest production show Cunard has ever staged. This pastiche of 1960s music, which has toured extensively throughout the U.K. and U.S., has been adapted for the Queen Elizabeth.

“The Piccadilly Line,” which will feature the entire company, explores the spoken word, song and prose as characters get on and off a train journey on the world’s oldest underground rail system.

The action is set in the shell of a London tube train carriage.

“Hotel Royale” is a musical production featuring 16 singers and dancers who bring to life the story of a hotel that is past its prime — once the playground of the rich and famous, it is now home to some quirky staff and unusual guests.

“Sing,” a lively production based on the popularity of “Singers in Concert” performed on Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, features 21 musicians and four singers on stage.

Queen Elizabeth will continue the tradition of presenting Cunard’s Royal Nights with the debut of “The Cunard Ball,” “London Swings,” “The Starlight Ball” and the “Elizabethan Ball.”

Marine Protected Area In Oman

July 21, 2010 on 8:54 am | In Adventure Travel, Middle East, Oman, Sailing, Scuba Diving | Comments Off

Biosphere Expeditions, an award-winning non-profit volunteer wildlife conservation organization, has completed baseline research of the coral reefs off the remote and mountainous Musandam peninsula of Oman. This is the first time this area has been surveyed, bordered as it is by massive developments in the United Arab Emirates.

This high level of construction is believed to have had a considerable negative impact on the marine environment of the neighboring area.

But the results of the first survey, which have just been released are encouraging.

“We discovered corals here that appear to endure extremely hard conditions, and a higher abundance of snappers than in any other part of the region,” said Kathy Wilden from Biosphere Expeditions.

“While this is only the beginning, and we will be returning to the area in October 2010, it is a start to building a case at government level for this to be declared a Marine Protected Area.”

Volunteers travelers from around the world have an opportunity to join this remarkable volunteer wildlife expedition.

Baines’ River Camp In Zambia’s Chiawa Park

July 21, 2010 on 8:53 am | In Adventure Travel, Africa, Cabinweb, Zambia | Comments Off

Free Shipping on Orders over $50Mantis, manager of eco-friendly five-star properties, will open Baines’ River Camp on Aug. 1 among giant tamarind and jackal-berry trees on the banks of the Zambezi River opposite the Mana Pools World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe.

The camp was named after John Thomas Baines, famous English-born artist and explorer, who, accompanying David Livingston up the Zambezi in 1858, was one of the first white men to see Victoria Falls.

Baines’ River Camp comprises eight luxurious colonial-style suites, each named after an African explorer.

The air-conditioned suites have views over the Zambezi River, ceiling fans, oriental rugs, rich fabrics blended with leather and rattan and granite and natural hardwood timber furnishings. Covered verandas are tiled with terracotta and outfitted with large sofas, comfortable chairs and antique coffee tables.

The area abounds with wildlife including lion, elephant, buffalo, antelope, hippo, leopard and the rare and elusive Samango monkey. A modern kitchen is able to produce a wide range of dishes without a set menu or fixed meal times. The days’ activities are discussed with the hosts, and meals are planned accordingly.

ExOfficio: Clothing for the Adventurous SpiritThe main camp features a boardroom and library with seating for 20, open-plan dining and lounge area, a bar, guest restrooms, reception with wireless internet facilities, warm fireplaces for cool winter nights and a refreshing pool for hot summer days.

The boardroom and library are ideal for corporate functions and can be converted into a studio suitable for photographic workshops and incentive groups.

REI.com

Baines’ River Camp is located in Chiawa Partnership Park, a community conservation initiative spearheaded by the owners and claiming the same protected status as neighboring Lower Zambezi National Park.

Entrance to the National Park is a 20-minute boat ride from the camp. No fences exist in the area, so wildlife roams freely between the areas and in and around the camp.

The Lower Zambezi area is home to more than 60 species of mammals and more than 350 species of birds, along with a vast array of trees and a variety of habitats.

Guests have the option of a bush safari in a four-wheel drive vehicle or a game cruise on the river.

Experienced river guides take guests up- and downstream in search of the elusive African Skimmer, or elephants bathing or a rare glimpse of Africa’s most endangered species, the wild dog.

Standard bed night rates range from $495 per person double occupancy, including two scheduled activities per day, entry fees into the Lower Zambezi National Park, community development levies, all meals and local beverages, same day laundry service and free wireless internet connectivity.

Rates exclude private use of game-drive vehicles and boats, government taxes, fishing tackle and transfers between Baines’ River Camp and Lusaka.

Due to climatic conditions, all camps and lodges in the Lower Zambezi Valley typically operate their season from April to November annually.

Owing to the nature of the establishment and its surrounds, children under the age of 14 cannot be accommodated.

The Royal Zambezi Airstrip is located five-and-a-half miles from the camp. The drive between the camp and Royal Zambezi Airstrip takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on the wildlife along the way. Generally, guests will fly from Lusaka (approximately 30-minute flight), Livingstone (approximately one-hour flight) or any of the other wildlife areas in Zambia to the Royal Zambezi Airstrip.

A game-drive vehicle, complete with refreshments and cold hand-towels awaits the guests on arrival.
