Here are the latest ones that have us in a celebratory mood:
•The BATTLE OF THE GLEN is a special edition, Glen Breton 15-year-old single malt whiskey from the Glenora Inn & Distillery, based on Cape Breton Island, NS. The name alludes to the seven-year legal fight over the use of the trademark “Glen Breton.”
To pay homage to the remarkable victory over Scotland’s Scotch Whisky Association (the group that opposed the Nova Scotia company adopting the term),
Glenora introduced this velvety single malt with apple and maple notes. Cheers to that! www.novascotia.com

iPhone apps show Germans what’s to do in Canada
October 27, 2010 on 8:03 am | In Alberta, Books Guidebooks, British Columbia, Canada, Germany, Labrador, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, NWT, Ontario, PEI, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Skiing Snowboarding, Toronto, Yukon | Comments Off
Skiing? Fitness? Canada travel? Ja, CTC-Germany has an app for that.
Fun iPhone apps show Germans what’s to do in Canada in winter, promote partner packages.
Vorsprung durch Technik, as they say in Germany (“progress through technology”)—and Canada, too. The Germany office of the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) has put heads and smartphones together and come up with some fun ‘n funky iPhone apps to promote Canada winter travel.
Industry sources are predicting global smartphone sales will outstrip PCs for the first time in 2010. So these apps will deliver Canada, as well as a real sense of winter fun, into the palms of thousands of users. Here’s a peek:
Quiz Canada: Test the grey matter with 200 questions on all of Canada—summer and winter. There’s also a high-score leaderboard, plus a promotion with CANUSA Touristik for travel packages and a special Visa card with 50 bucks already loaded onto it. The app is fully integrated with Facebook, so users can share with their pals.
Fit for Canada: Try ski gymnastics training to get ready for a ski or snowboarding holiday (very useful for travellers who spent too long at Oktoberfest).
Ten different exercises, devised by German Sport University Cologne, put users through the paces. There’s also a “lexicon” with ski and boarding terms, and a “Winter Holidays in Canada” section, featuring Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Plus there’s full integration with Facebook.
Ski Race Canada: This app does what it says on the can. Three races: easy (Kananaskis, AB), medium (Jasper, AB) and difficult (Banff, AB). The game highlights partner logos on the slopes; if players ski over them, they get extra points. Lexicon and “Winter Holidays in Canada” are also included, along with Facebook integration.
Ski Travel Canada: This extensive tour guide info app designed to help would-be travellers, with images and links from CTC’s Canada: the Ski and Snowboard Guide. Lexicon and “Winter Holidays in Canada” are also included, along with Facebook integration and the CANUSA Touristik promo.
Go Canada: This booking app offers six CANUSA Touristik packages to Alberta. Users can also send info direct to the operator, which will give them a chance of getting a special offer.
The latest segment of the “Blind Date in Canada” promotion from CTC-Germany is also underway, part of the Generation Kanada project. The contest is now open for two 50-plus German singles to win a trip to Canada in 2011. Feierabend, the largest portal for this demographic (150,000-plus members) in Germany, is the main partner.
Harlem gets first major hotel in four decades
October 27, 2010 on 7:05 am | In East Coast, New York City | Comments OffW
hen a trendy Starwood boutique hotel called Aloft opens in Harlem later this month, it will be the neighborhood’s first major hotel since the famed Theresa closed in 1967.
Harlem is already a must-see for many visitors to New York, but the tourism industry believes the opening of this hotel will help make the area even more of a destination by encouraging people to stay overnight or longer, says the New York Times.
“Instead of just going up to visit Harlem, you can stay in Harlem,” said George Fertitta, head of NYC & Company, the city’s tourism and marketing agency.
The Aloft is one of about 100 new hotels to open in the city since 2007. A number of other hotel projects planned for Harlem were abandoned or delayed by the recession.
Said Fertitta:
“The interest in Harlem from tourists on a global basis is extraordinary. It’s one of the top spots in New York City that people want to see,”
Big Apple Greeter, which offers free tours led by volunteer New Yorkers, gets more requests for Harlem than any other neighborhood except Greenwich Village.
And double-decker tour buses pull up all day long on 125th Street outside the Apollo Theater, which attracts 2.5 million visitors a year for in-house tours and its famous Wednesday Amateur Night.
The Theresa was a haven for prominent African-Americans in an era when they weren’t welcome at hotels elsewhere.
In 1960, the Theresa’s guest roster included Fidel Castro, in town to speak at the United Nations.
But in recent years, the Theresa was run-down.
Harlem, like so many New York neighborhoods, was also hurt by rising crime and urban decay.
But these days, Harlem is “vibrant and up and coming,” said Brian McGuinness, senior vice president of Aloft Hotels.
“The Aloft brand is known for being cutting-edge and innovative, and as we looked at Harlem, and all the way back from when Hotel Theresa opened up in 1913, which was quite avant-garde at the time, we determined that Harlem was certainly the right place to launch the Aloft in New York City,” he said.
50th Anniversary of Key Largo’s Pennekamp Underwater Park
October 27, 2010 on 7:04 am | In Beachbooker, Florida, Sailing, Scuba Diving, The Keys | Comments Off
KEY LARGO, Florida Keys — The 50th anniversary of the creation of America’s first underwater preserve, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, is to be celebrated Dec. 1-11 in Key Largo. The island is humming with activity as it prepares for visitors marking the occasion with a trip to the park at the gateway to the Florida Keys.
World-renowned oceanographer and explorer Dr. Sylvia Earle, “Time” magazine’s first Hero for the Planet, is to be keynote speaker at the celebration’s signature event. Also scheduled to be in attendance are original park managers and staff as well as descendants of the late John Pennekamp, the “Miami Herald” editor who helped create this Florida Keys jewel that lies just a 90-minute drive from Miami.
The park named for Pennekamp was dedicated Dec. 10, 1960. Today it draws more than a million visitors annually to explore its nature trails and beaches and observe the abundant underwater wildlife that inhabits its 70 square nautical miles.
Numerous events held inside Pennekamp Park, on the water and throughout the Key Largo community are designed to appeal to divers, snorkelers and outdoor enthusiasts. Highlights of the 11-day celebration include:
Dec. 1: 50th Anniversary Photo Contest Begins. Participants can enter up to six images that portray Key Largo’s natural beauty and tell its story through pictures in this juried competition that is open to all shutterbugs.
Stephen Frink, one of the world’s most published underwater photographers and a longtime Key Largo resident, is to be one of the judges.
Dec. 4: Snorkeling Record Attempt. Snorkelers are encouraged to participate and help set the bar for Pennekamp Park’s record for the most snorkelers in the water at one time.
Visit www.fla-keys.com/pennekamp50
and click Event Highlights for more details.
Dec. 6-9: Protect the Reef Days. In accordance with the park’s mission to protect and preserve the surrounding natural resources, events over these three days are aimed at keeping coral reefs clean and healthy.
An environmental cleanup is planned for Dec. 6 at 10 a.m., both for the shoreline and by canoe or kayak. In addition, a morning educational coral restoration seminar, followed by two afternoon scuba dives to actual coral nurseries, are scheduled with the Coral Restoration Foundation and Amoray Dive Resort.
The Reef Environmental Education Foundation is sponsoring a free fish identification seminar, with an optional two-tank scuba dive, beginning at 10 a.m. Dec. 7.
Open to recreational snorkelers and divers, the introductory “class” highlights the Florida Keys’ 50 most-sighted reef fish.
To join, visit www.reef.org/fishid/pennekamp
A derby-style Lionfish Roundup is planned for Wednesday, Dec. 8. Two-person teams can sign up to help remove invasive lionfish from the reefs.
Prizes are to be awarded to the teams capturing the biggest, most and smallest lionfish.
For more information visit www.reef.org/lionfish/roundup/pennekamp
Dec. 10: Underwater Rededication Ceremony. Marking the 50th anniversary of Pennekamp’s original dedication, the rededication is planned at one of the park’s most famous offshore sites, the 9-foot-tall bronze “Christ of the Deep.”
Resting in 20 feet of water, the iconic statue is a replica of the like-named statue in the Mediterranean Sea, donated to the Underwater Society of America in 1961 by industrialist Egidi Cressi.
Dec. 11: Educational Fair & Environmental Expo. Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pennekamp, this event underscores the island-wide celebration with conservation-minded educational vendor booths and exhibits as well as nationally renowned guest speakers including Dr. Earle.
Visitors can enjoy the park’s popular water activities during the event, such as viewing the reef on glass-bottom boat tours, canoeing, kayaking or fishing.
Several Key Largo area retail businesses, dive and snorkel operators, restaurants and lodging properties have special value-added offers and roll-back prices during the 50th anniversary celebration.

Cruises: new love boats
October 27, 2010 on 7:04 am | In Cruise Boats, Weddings Honeymoons | Comments Off
Ala, the old TV series “Love Boat,” marrying at sea has been an option for years but cruise weddings, second marriages and vow renewals are getting more popular than ever, observers say.
A major reason: the economy as couples look to trim wedding budgets while at the same time minimize stress.
Nearly two-thirds of travel agents surveyed last year by the Cruise Lines International Association had booked increasing numbers of cruise weddings in the past two years. CLIA reports that for some cruise lines, wedding business has risen as much as 60 percent in the decade.
Cruise lines are starting to cater to the trend.
Disney Cruise lines offers an in-house Fairytale Weddings & Honeymoons service. Royal Ocdean events handles ceremonies for Holland America Line and other lines such as Princess Cruises uses the Wedding Experience company for its bookings.
You may marry in port before you embark on the cruise, at sea in the ship’s chapel or other spots on board, or ashore in increasingly exotic locales.
“It’s just so cheap to go on cruises, it’s scandalous at this point,” said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor of CruiseCritic.com, an online resource for cruise information, told the Dallas Morning News.
“You’ll pay $20,000 to get married in a hotel ballroom when, at a fraction, you can marry in some entirely romantic places and have the cruise, too.”
Held onboard or at hundreds of locations worldwide, ceremonies range from about $1,500 to $3,500 for a basic package, on top of the trip cost, the newspaper reports.
European weddings are a little pricier, ranging from $2,500 to $7,000. Brown says popular venues include secluded South Pacific beaches; a catamaran, yacht or private island in the Caribbean; villas, gardens, wineries, chateaus and monasteries; atop Alaskan glaciers; and on ships.
Although most wedding cruises involve a handful of friends and family going a short holiday to the Caribbean or Bahamas, nearly 10 percent of travel agents surveyed by the industry association had booked weddings for 30 to 200 guests.
A few couples are even opting to charter luxury yachts or river cruise ships so that they can chart an itinerary and design an intimate, custom ceremony, according to CLIA.
For couples on a budget, there are plenty of ways to personalize wedding packages. For minimal extra cost they can upgrade menus or add live entertainment and additional cocktail receptions, bridesmaids’ teas, stag parties, showers or engagement ceremonies.
In movie-style glamorous fashion, some couples want the captain to perform the ceremony.
If you’re counting on the captain marrying you legally at sea, book with Celebrity, P&O Cruises, Azamara Cruises or Princess, advises the Morning News.
Their ships are flagged to either Malta or Bermuda, the only countries whose laws recognize captain-officiated civil ceremonies in open water.
Silversea reduces prices to court singles market
Silversea Cruises is adding to its Solo Traveler program. The cruise line has reduced the single supplement on more than 20 sailings in 2011 to just 10 percent – 25 percent (above the per-person, double-occupancy fare) for Vista, Veranda and Midship Veranda suites.
“Initially launched last summer on select 2010 voyages, the line’s specially reduced Solo Traveler fares proved such a popular incentive with independent travelers that the company is extending the offer to select 2011 itineraries,” the company announced.
“With special fares like these — which can be combined with Silver Savings, Free Air and $250 Shipboard Credit offers — there’s no excuse for single travelers to stay at home,” said Steve Tucker, Silversea’s vice president of field sales for North America.
Also, on several voyages, Gentlemen Hosts will be on board, “which is a real plus for single female guests looking for a dining companion or a dance partner,” Silversea says.
All-inclusive fares include an ocean-view suite (most suites feature a private veranda), attentive butler service, complimentary wines and spirits, fine dining, sophisticated enrichment and entertainment programs, and all onboard gratuities.
Harrison Hot Springs Resort a green getaway in BC
October 27, 2010 on 7:04 am | In British Columbia, Cabinweb, Canada, Spa Resorts | Comments Off
Enjoy the decadence guilt-free.The original geothermal system: this one is it. And plans are underway for more sustainable behind-the-scenes work.
Like many resort hotels, Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa—perched on a sandy lakefront about two hours east of Vancouver, BC—has made a commitment to sustainability. You’ll find recycling bins in the rooms and swirly lightbulbs in the halls, all the usual stuff. But this property offers something else, a feature that distinguishes it from most similar relaxation destinations, but one that remains largely invisible to guests: geothermal heat.
To be clear, we’re talking about the natural mineral hot-spring pools. There are five of them, designated for swimming laps, splashing with the kids, hanging out with a trashy novel or magazine, you name it.
At many properties, all this fun consumes a great deal of energy. Somewhere out of view, a near-constant fire of natural gas—representing energy, money and carbon emissions—keeps the pool waters nice and toasty.
But Harrison’s are heated by Earth’s own power plant, a pair of nearby thermal springs—the 40º C (104º F) “Potash” and the 65º C (149º F) “Sulfur.”
It’s guilt-free relaxation. And the good news is that the property is also investigating how it might harvest the ancient free heat for applications like warming the fresh water supplying guest rooms, restaurant kitchen and housekeeping operations.
If that plan works out, well—let’s just say it would spell more good than a whole mountain of blue recycling bins.
Postscript: If you bring your bikes along for a visit, you can also take in nearby The Farm House Natural Cheeses, Limbert Mountain Farm and Canadian Hazelnut (604-796-2136), all part of the scenic area’s popular Circle Farm Tour.
