Edinburgh Christmas Tradition With Literary Event

November 21, 2010 on 10:35 am | In Festivals, Scotland, United Kingdom, Webbandstand | Comments Off

Dales Holiday CottagesA meeting of literary giants is planned to take place in Edinburgh as part of the celebrations surrounding the 25th anniversary of the city’s Christmas tree, gifted by Norway as a symbol of the two countries’ cultural and historical links.

This November, Scotland’s favourite detective novelist, Ian Rankin, and his Norwegian counterpart, Gunnar Staalesen, will come together for a unique seminar to discuss their legendary creations – John Rebus and Varg Veum – which share remarkable parallels despite being conceived an ocean apart.

The characters of Rebus and Veum are synonymous with their home cities; Edinburgh and Bergen. Whilst their individual storylines and depicted lifestyles are influenced by the nature of the world around them, both are renowned for their unconventional attitudes as solitary divorcees with a disregard for authority.

Not only do the characters share stark similarities, but the cities in which they are based are also renowned for their various twinned elements.

Whilst Edinburgh’s Christmas tree was originally donated from the Norwegian city of Bergen, the links between the two cities extend far beyond this festive tradition.

Both are classed as UNESCO World Heritage sites; are greatly influenced by their years as major European trading ports; host a world-class International Festival each year; and are widely recognised for their unusual combination of big city qualities and small town charm.

See Britain with a Great British Heritage Pass
Chaired by former director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Catherine Lockerbie, the anniversary event will be held on Friday 26 November 2010 at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh.

Tickets are free.

Ski Club Of Great Britain Snowboarding DVD

November 21, 2010 on 10:26 am | In London, Skiing Snowboarding, United Kingdom | Comments Off

The Ski Club of Great Britain and The British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) have released their latest instructional DVD – ‘Snowboarding Skills – Beginners and beyond’. The DVD is released on the back of the already successful and best selling series ‘Skiing Skills’.

Produced by Acrobat Television, Snowboarding Skills: Beginners and beyond is a clear step-by-step guide taking a complete beginner to a stage where they can carve turns and cover most of the mountain.

The programme also lays the technical foundations for what’s to come in the advanced stages of snowboarding.

The DVD is split into two parts. The first section covering BASI’s ‘Central Theme’ was filmed in Chill Factore in Manchester and the second ‘Masterclass’ section in Les Deux Alpes in France.

All classes are tutored by the top BASI instructors, Mark Bishop, Robert Sanderson and Lyndon Boddey.

Presenter Peter Hart stresses that the Snowboarding Skills DVD helps beginners make turns bruise-free, but it’s not designed to replace a real snowboarding lesson.

Peter says: “I feel that all instructional programmes make a lot more sense when you’ve actually done a bit.

They’re the perfect reference library as we not only show the right way but also point out the most common mistakes.

“In this DVD we have made it our duty to entertain as well as inform.”

Commenting on the latest addition to the DVD range, BASI Chairman Gareth Roberts said:

“We are really pleased to have worked jointly with the Ski Club and Acrobat TV on the production of the latest DVD.

It is a very useful aid for anyone wishing to develop their snowboarding skills and complements the other Snowsports Skills DVDs in the series”.

Snowboarding Skills: Beginners and beyond will be available to buy now in time for Christmas.

All of the snowsports titles are available on DVD and Blue Ray on Acrobat’s online shop, BASI and the Ski Club of Great Britain’s websites, all good sports shops and on Amazon and Play.com

DVDs start at £19.95 plus p+p.
