Weimar, Germany, to Celebrate Liszt’s 200th Birthday
November 20, 2010 on 7:55 am | In Festivals, Germany, Webbandstand | Comments Off
For the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt in 2011, the city of Weimar in Thuringia in Germany’s east, only two hours from Frankfurt, celebrates the life and work of its honorary citizen and world-famous composer. Weimar has been in the 18th and 19th century one of the cultural epicenters of Germany, home to greats such as Goethe, Schiller and Bach.
Liszt lived there for over 10 years as the chief conductor of the Hofkapelle and returned to the town many times. Weimar is the center of the anniversary celebrations of Liszt in the state of Thuringia hosting the exhibition, “Franz Liszt — A European in Weimar” (June 24 to Oct. 30, 2011) and over 200 concerts, performances and events throughout 2011.
Weimar starts off the Liszt year with an opening concert in the Hofkapelle by famous Austrian-American pianist Alfred Brendel (Feb. 16). Brendel is a great admirer of Liszt’s genius and rediscovered his work for 20th century audiences. He will also give two lectures on Liszt following his concert in Weimar (Feb. 18 and 19).
The focal point of the anniversary is the state exhibition “Franz Liszt — A European in Weimar.” The first section of the exhibition in the Schiller Museum traces the stations of his life and the virtuoso’s travel throughout Europe to Weimar, where the majority of his most important works were composed in barely more than 10 years.
The second section of the exhibition in the Castle Museum traces the technical development, sound aesthetics and cultural history context of the piano in Liszt’s era.
The highlight of the exhibition is the presentation of the Liszt grand piano copied especially for the State exhibition by the Marseilles piano manufacturers Boisselot & Fils.
It was at this piano that Liszt composed his works in the private rooms of his Weimar home in the Altenburg.
In addition, the permanent exhibition in Weimar’s Liszt Museum, features manuscripts from the largest Liszt collection in the world.

Cambodian Adventure With Monty Python’s Julian Doyle
November 19, 2010 on 5:48 pm | In Adventure Travel, Asia, Cambodia | Comments Off
Skyros, the leading holistic holiday, is delighted to introduce Monty Python film maker Julian Doyle who will be accompanying the Skyros-in-Cambodia tour this January 2011. He will help participants document their journey in words and pictures whilst exploring the dramatic jungles and temples including awe-inspiring Angkor Wat. The tour runs from 14 to 23 January 2011, can be booked online at www.skyros.com or by calling 01983 865566. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
An accomplished writer, director and film maker, Julian, best known for editing Monty Python’s Life of Brian and shooting the special effects for Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, has also directed the films Love Potion (1987), about a drug rehabilitation centre, and Chemical Wedding (2008), an occult thriller starring Simon Callow which he wrote with Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson.
He has also written Twilight of the Gods, a play about the relationship between Wagner and Nietzsche which was performed at the Edinburgh Festival.
Julian was a course facilitator on last year’s Cambodia tour. He says, “An adventure yes, but on my last journey it was a productive adventure since the participants completed a film and 8 albums of exceptional photographs.
On top of this they came away with a better understanding of their cameras.
But my goal is always to understand new ways of seeing and then help with the technical side of capturing this. Because of this, Skyros suggested I expand the course from digital photography to include those who want to capture their experience in words. They are right, whether photographing or writing what matters is having an interesting view. Different, perhaps enthusiastic or comic or dramatic are all valid in each media.”
Julian has many personal memories of Cambodia, a land rich in photographical subject matter. “The adventure itself has left many images just captured in my brain. Trekking through the steep gloom of the jungle following elephants out onto an open grassland waterhole: wandering through root encrusted temples: crossing the backwater border between Thailand and Cambodia to find a mini Las Vegas with giant gambling hotels sitting in no-mans land.
A restaurant in a small market town stepped in layers down to the river where the food was exceptional and surrounded by millions of worldwide knick-knacks, from collections of German tankards to cabinets full of Elvis memorabilia.
Sitting in a bar in Siem Reap having a beer with ones feet in a fish tank with little minnows nibbling at your dead skin. And of course Angkor Wat itself – better than you would ever imagine, and for which neither images nor words will ever do true justice.
But of all these amazing experiences, it’s the Skyros community spirit which drew him to take this tour again. “When asked if I would return I answered yes, not for any of the above but for the great camaraderie which the Skyros ethos brings to the group. It is fascinating to watch people meet, learn, develop and be rewarded by our final nights premiere of their work. In the end it is your companions that make the journey fulfilling.”
Julian will also be joining the mid January Skyros-in-Thailand holiday in beautiful Koh Chang, Thailand where he will offer occasional talks on improving photography skills amidst the luxury of the 5 star resort.

“Switzerland of Central Asia” Kyrgyzstan
November 19, 2010 on 4:01 pm | In Asia | Comments OffKyrgyzstan, Putting The Past Behind It
Six months ago ‘Be Travellers’ founding directors Mike Griffin & Ollie Kilvert arrived in Kyrgyzstan’s, capital Bishkek just before the overthrow of the authoritarian government of former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. Their company motto is “Be Travellers, not tourists” and the company was set up to offer adventure tours in Central Asia, the worlds most untapped of emerging travel markets.
The purpose of their trip was to conduct reconnaissance for their group itineraries in 2011. Arriving on April the 6th they immediately found themselves in the middle of a spontaneous coup as discontent generated by widespread public dissatisfaction with stagnant living standards and the rampant corruption of Bakiyev’s government spilled onto the streets.
It resulted in 85 people dead, mostly shot by Bakiev’s snipers and was followed by two nights of looting as security services pulled out of the city to distance themselves from the shootings.
Mike recalls “We never felt unsafe, the anger was never directed towards foreigners, and the many Kyrgyz we met during this time were even more keen to demonstrate just what an amazing country Kyrgyzstan is.”
Once dubbed the “Switzerland of Central Asia” Kyrgyzstan now has the potential to live up to that reputation.
It is a country with a tremendous amount to offer any traveller – with stunning mountain scenery, a fascinating culture more than 3000 years old, and the beginnings of facilities able to cater for a whole host of mountain pursuits.
From Skiing to trekking to rock climbing, it has it all.
Not to mention a list of stunning unclimbed mountain peaks waiting for first ascents. Mike says “if you can imagine the Alps before they were discovered then you can imagine Kyrgyzstan, only Kyrgyzstan’s mountains are higher, its culture more fascinating, and the hospitality is legendary.”
When they left the country at the end of April, however, the future was uncertain. Ethnic tension in the south of the country was heading towards more violence, but at the same time Kyrgyzstan had the regions first female president and the promise of free and fair elections.
It is a promise that seems to have been largely delivered upon.
Ollie believes “Kyrgyzstan has many hurdles to overcome, not least in reinvigorating the fragile economy that took a huge hit in the aftermath of the April revolution.
But with a stable political future, Kyrgyzstan now has the opportunity of becoming a ‘new frontier´for travellers.”
Be Travellers currently has one guided group tour in Kyrgyzstan for 2011, but the plan now is to increase that number to four. After a recent history of unrest, preceded by nearly a century lost under the secretive cloak of the soviet union, travellers, they hope, will play a large part in Kyrgyzstan’s future.

Celebrity Cruises is revamping its evening offerings in its “lido,” or primary casual dining venues. Moving away from a sit-down experience and towards an “international marketplace” approach, the offerings will blend classic and contemporary cuisine.
“Since the launch of our Solstice Class in 2008, our guests have shared a great deal of positive feedback about the flavours and variety offered in our marketplace-style Oceanview Café venues, so we are taking that concept to the rest of the fleet,” said Jacques Van Staden, Vice President, Culinary Operations.”
