Guernsey: Top Spot For Cruise Ships In The British Isles

January 30, 2011 on 5:03 pm | In Beachbooker, Cruise Boats, London, United Kingdom | Comments Off

With 76 vessels scheduled to visit this season, the islands of Guernsey hope that this will be enough to once again take the top spot as the most visited British port for day calls.

In 2011, Guernsey will deliver a warm welcome to the passengers of the Queen Elizabeth, the new Cunard ship, that will make its inaugural calls to the island in September. Queen Elizabeth recalls the rich heritage of its predecessor, which bore the same name, and features Guernsey in two of its itineraries.

Situated some 140km from the south coast of England – yet only 44km from the Normandy coast of France – Guernsey is geographically well positioned on the southern side of the entrance to the English Channel.

With more than 800 years of history behind it St Peter Port, Guernsey’s capital, is one of the most picturesque seaports in Europe. A stunning location for cruise line calls, it offers quality port services and professional handling arrangements and is open 24 hours a day.

VisitGuernsey makes arrangements for a reception marquee and ‘meet and greet’ service to welcome cruise passengers, with a range of literature about the island provided. Cruise calls are also a firm favourite with the resident community who offer a warm welcome to our passengers.

The new St Peter Port Trails map has proved a particularly popular aide for visitors interested in learning more about the town, with a selection of self-guided walks revealing different aspects of St Peter Port’s heritage and attractions.

Further options for cruise visitors include exploring the island’s Ruettes Tranquilles, scenic tours of the impressive 13th century Castle Cornet, visits to the beautiful sister islands of Sark and Herm, and finding out more about the Channel Islands’ five-year occupation history during World War II.

For more information on Guernsey please visit www.visitguernsey.com or call 01481 723 552. VisitGuernsey’s latest Cruise Liner Guide, designed to assist cruise executives and excursion agents, can be downloaded at www.guernseytrademedia.com/cruiseguernsey

Carnival Capers At Half-Term

January 30, 2011 on 5:02 pm | In Festivals, Italy, London, Rome, United Kingdom | Comments Off

If you’ve ‘done’ Venice and Rio and are looking for a colourful new carnival experience, head for Acireale where Sicily’s oldest and most spectacular carnival takes place on the island’s east coast.

The Acireale Carnival (19 February-8 March) is best known for its spectacular floral displays and floats portraying celebrities, politicians and fantasy creations. Dating back to the 16th century, celebrations include street parades and entertainers and fortunately, the former egg and orange-throwing has been replaced by marching bands, dancers and masked performers.

A seaside city at the foot of Mount Etna and renowned for its Baroque architecture, Acireale is just a few miles from the attractive town of Taormina. Stay in the heart of Acireale at the Melaverde apartment (sleeps 7) which costs from £726 for a 3-night stay, or in one of five independent cottages at The Queen’s Jewels, a farm estate in the Taormina countryside. Each cottage has a spacious terrace that overlooks the lemon and olive tree-filled gardens, and, further afield, Mount Etna. Citrus fruits, olive oil, jam and eggs can all be bought from the farm. One week in a cottage for four at The Queen’s Jewels starts at £335 with www.solosicily.com, tel. 020 7193 0158.

Other nearby activities include trekking, mountain-biking or horse-riding at the nearby Gorges of Alcantara, taking the Circumetnea train around Etna or indulging in some retail therapy in nearby Taormina. Flights are available from Gatwick to Catania with British Airways. soloSicily offers accommodation in villas and boutique hotels throughout coastal and inland Sicily.
