These Italian Homes Are Real Charmers

January 30, 2011 on 6:09 pm | In Italy, Rome | Comments Off

A delightful little cottage on a vineyard near Siena, the stylishly-restored wing of a rambling farmhouse in Chianti, and an old convent near Arezzo are among holiday homes featured for the first time in Invitation to Tuscany’s 2011 brochure (020-8444 9500; www.invitationtotuscany.com).

Established for more than 30 years, the independent family-run company offers an eclectic range of over 200 charming and ‘characteristically Italian’ properties, all of which are known to the family personally. The portfolio includes romantic hideaways for couples, laid-back houses that welcome children, and large and luxurious villas perfect for a get-together of family and friends. Extras such as groceries on arrival, catering, cookery classes, bike-hire and wine-tastings can all be pre-booked, and dream Tuscan weddings can also be arranged.

Among newly-available homes is a cottage a ten-minute drive from historic Siena located on a vast private country estate – complete with splendid old villa, medieval towers, 14th-century chapel and vineyard. Sleeping up to four, Tinozza has a welcoming sitting room with traditional open fireplace and country antiques, and the well-equipped kitchen and dining room leads onto a furnished terrace. Guests share a large swimming pool that is the setting for a weekly dinner organised by the estate’s owners who can also arrange guided tours and wine-tastings. Weekly rental is £1,738 year-round.

http://www.invitationtotuscany.com/properties/property-detail?property_id=221

Also featured for the first time are three attractive wings of Il Casolare, a rambling 16th-century farmhouse in the hilly wine-growing region of Chianti midway between Florence and Siena. Sleeping six or eight, they blend carefully-preserved traditional features such as terracotta floors and chestnut-beamed ceilings with bold colours, rich fabrics and quality appliances. Each has a private outdoor eating area and shares a large pool with views of olive groves and wooded hillsides. Restaurants and shops are a couple of miles away and local villages come alive with festivals, markets and concerts from spring to autumn. Two houses cost £2,345 per week year-round and the third is £2,454.

http://www.invitationtotuscany.com/properties/property-detail?property_id=29

An air of tranquillity still hangs over L’Eremo, a 12th-century convent now a luxurious villa sleeping up to 21. Restored and furnished with exceptional taste, it is set in a wildlife preserve with sweeping views over the River Arno valley in the hills between Arezzo and Florence. Ground-floor rooms lead onto a cool inner courtyard and living rooms include one with toys and games for children. Features include a main sitting room where a central pillar supports four arches, a superbly-equipped kitchen, and a study where a glass floor panel reveals a 1,000-year-old wall. Landscaped gardens feature a huge swimming pool linked to a children’s pool by a small waterfall, and a vine-covered pergola for leisurely lunches. Weekly cost is from £6,363 (January-early May, excluding Easter) to £7,890 in July and August.

Discover Secret Wight on a February half term break

January 30, 2011 on 6:07 pm | In London, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

With 10 Secret Wight discovery challenges to choose from, parents booking a half term break to the Isle of Wight with Wightlink (0871 376 1000 www.wightlink.co.uk) can set out on foot to find wild landscape, monster vegetation covering huge expanses of rock pools, Britain’s oldest lighthouse and even the elusive red squirrel. The ideal guide for an adventurous half term holiday, Secret Wight includes a series of off-the-beaten-track family adventures – loved by locals but hardly known to visitors, and all free of charge!¹

To make the most out of a Secret Wight half term trip, cross-Solent ferry operator, Wightlink has come up with a trio of packages to choose from – all under £500 for a family of four – from a five-star holiday park to self-catering in a converted farm building or log cabin.

THE BRIDGE OF ADVENTURE & SQUIRREL SAFARI…
Close to one of the Island’s great beauty spots, Newtown Estuary, The Orchards in Newbridge is Wightlink’s top choice for a pound-stretching family staycation this half term. Set within 15 acres of countryside with indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools and a children’s play area, one-week at the holiday park costs from just £220 for a family of four (£55pp). Departing on 19 February, the Wightlink Green Getaways holiday includes return car ferry crossings from Portsmouth or Lymington and seven nights in an onsite Holiday Caravan – complete with toilet, shower, fridge, TV, cooker and microwave.

SECRET WIGHT: Head to nearby Parkhurst Forest and go nuts to find an elusive red squirrel on a two-mile ‘Squirrel Safari’ woodland trail, or walk over water on the Bridge of Adventure at Newtown Estuary to see the wild landscape of mudflats, salt marsh and ancient woodlands.

THE TOWERS OF ADVENTURE…
If the idea of hiding away in deepest countryside with only cows for neighbours appeals, stay at one of the Isle of Wight’s secret gems: Gotten Manor. Set in a sheltered hollow at the foot of St Catherine’s Down in South Wight, the self-catering two-bedroom Cart House is an ideal base for a family on a Secret Wight holiday. Departing on 18 February, a one-week Wightlink Green Getaways holiday costs £496 for a family of four (£124pp) including return car ferry crossings from Portsmouth or Lymington.

SECRET WIGHT: A footpath leads from Gotten Manor up to the Hoy Monument and on to the old lighthouse, Pepper Pot – the two towers to discover on the Towers of Adventure challenge. The towers share a strange, other-worldly quality – one looking like a medieval rocket ship and the other like a homing beacon to attract aliens.

THE LEDGE OF ADVENTURE…
For a half term adventure close to the water, families can make the most of the east coast with a self-catering break at Harbour Farm Lodge, set within an RSPB Nature Reserve in Bembridge. Part of the Isle of Wight Farm & Country Holiday Group, the log cabin sleeps four in two bedrooms and has a fully-equipped kitchen, sitting room and verandah overlooking a lake. Departing on 18 February, a one-week Wightlink holiday costs from £416 for a family of four (£104pp) including self-catering accommodation and return car ferry crossings from Portsmouth or Lymington.

SECRET WIGHT: A short walk will take families to the beach, where at low tide there are a vast number of rock pools to explore on the Ledge of Adventure – home to a multitude of curious creatures and other-worldly marine algae. Discover what the waters reveal and look out for porcelain crabs, sea anemones and periwinkles.

Jet Away For Valentine’s Day

January 30, 2011 on 6:05 pm | In Adventure Travel, London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales, Weddings Honeymoons | Comments Off

As Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday this year, die-hard romantics have the perfect opportunity to whisk their loved one away for a long weekend. Whether to explore ancient wonders, relax on the beach or experience the world’s top casinos, Hayes & Jarvis (0871 664 0246 www.hayesandjarvis.com ) has come up with four far-flung ideas for a romantic break – as well as some top tips for unusual places to pop the question!

BEACH, SNOW, DESERT AND SHOPPING
For the partner who wants it all, H&J suggests a weekend in Dubai. It’s a destination of extremes, where couples can go ‘dune bashing’ in the desert, ski at the world’s largest indoor snow park, indulge in a spot of shopping at the souks and malls or simply relax by the beach. Departing on Saturday 12 February, a four-night break at the four-star Amwaj Rotana Jumeirah Beach costs £739 per person – a saving of 18 per cent (£158pp) including B&B accommodation, Gulf Air flights from London Heathrow and transfers.
POP THE QUESTION… on Dubai’s first ski slope then celebrate with a drink on the beach.

WONDER AT THE ANCIENT WORLD
Take your partner to see the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world on a short break to Egypt. Visit bustling downtown Cairo to explore the colourful bazaars then stay minutes away from the Great Pyramids of Giza at the four-star Pyramids Park. H&J has knocked 15 per cent off the price of a four-night break from Friday 11 February, so a Valentine’s weekend now costs £599 per person (saving £106pp), including B&B accommodation, KLM flights from London Heathrow and transfers.
POP THE QUESTION… inside the Great Pyramid.

FIVE-STAR FAR EAST
Couples looking for the ultimate far-flung luxury this Valentine’s Day can save 31 per cent on a five-star break to Hong Kong and Macau. Shop-til-you-drop with two nights room-only at the Harbour Grand Hong Kong then spend two nights (B&B) at The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel in Macau, where UNESCO- protected monuments stand side-by-side with sleek modern casinos. Departing on Thursday 10 February, a four-night break costs £699 per person (saving £314pp), including Jet Airways flights from Heathrow and transfers.
POP THE QUESTION… in one of the casinos of the ‘Las Vegas of the East’.

GLITZ, GLAMOUR AND NATURAL WONDERS
Whisk a loved one away to glitzy Las Vegas to soak up the atmosphere of Nevada’s 24/7 city and maybe even check out the wedding chapels to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day! As well as world-class casinos, shows and shopping, there is also the opportunity to treat that someone special to a helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon. H&J is offering 20 per cent off a four-night break at the five-star Vdara at CityCenter – an all-suite non-gaming hotel in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip – now available for £699 per person (saving £180pp), including room-only accommodation and Continental Airlines flights from Heathrow on Friday 11 February.

Seesawing Sterling Slashes Holiday Costs In Europe

January 30, 2011 on 6:03 pm | In London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

Annual Post Office® Travel Money Holiday Money Report reveals best and worst value overseas

• Sterling slide makes Far East resorts more expensive for UK tourists
• Egypt set to be 2011 hotspot despite 32 per cent resort price rise
• Europe now cheaper: Portugal prices down 49 per cent and Spain at a three year price low (www.postoffice.co.uk/holidaycosts2011)

UK tourists travelling long haul face paying more this year in countries traditionally regarded as cheap destinations – with Thailand and Malaysia among the worst hit, according to research for the fifth annual Holiday Money Report, launched today by Post Office Travel Money.

However, sterling gains against the euro and resort price cuts have put the hard-hit eurozone back into contention. Portugal is rated best value in the report’s barometer of living costs, while prices in Spain are at a record three year low.

The turnaround comes after exchange rates weakened against sterling in Europe but strengthened further afield. This means that tourists travelling to the Far East will get a lot less for their pounds because the Thai baht has strengthened by 11.4 per cent and the Malaysian ringgit by 12.8 per cent since last year – making resort costs more expensive than in Sri Lanka, now rated the cheapest long haul destination by the Post Office.

The only longer haul destinations where sterling has strengthened compared with last year are Kenya (+2.7 per cent) and Egypt (+0.5 per cent) both identified in the report as 2011 hotspots – even though Egypt resort prices have mushroomed by 32 per cent.

Sarah Munro, Post Office Head of Travel Money, said: “Egypt has been the outstanding mid haul holiday success of recent years with currency sales up five per cent last year and 110 per cent since 2005. We expect to see more growth in 2011 because the Egyptian pound is one of the few longer haul currencies to have weakened against sterling, the country is in a low band (B) for the increased Air Passenger Duty, making it ‘relatively’ cheap to fly there, and holiday packages are the lowest-priced in the longer haul market.”

Families looking for best value in Europe will get the most for their money in Portugal and Spain. Falling resort costs and a 7.4 per cent rise in sterling’s value against the euro saw prices fall 49 per cent in Portugal year on year – making it cheapest in the 2011 Post Office Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer. Published in the Holiday Money Report, this has been extended to cover 36 destinations.

At £32.84 for eight items, including dinner for two with wine, prices in Portugal’s Algarve resorts are less than half those in Sorrento, Italy (£73.44) – the only eurozone country to show a rise (+1 per cent). Second placed in the table (£36.68), Spain’s hard-hit Costas have slashed prices to their lowest levels in over three years in a bid to win back UK holidaymakers – resulting in a 48 per cent drop in costs for tourist staples compared with 2007.

Sarah Munro said: “Over the past two years popular resorts in the Algarve and the Costas suffered badly from a drop in UK visitors, put off by the prospect of higher costs because of the weak pound. Restaurants and bars responded by slashing prices in a battle for business and competition between the two, together with an improving exchange rate, has resulted in a price crash in Portugal and Spain.”

In fact resort discounting is commonplace according to the Post Office report. 15 of the 29 countries surveyed 12 months ago have registered resort price falls in the new barometer. These include Turkey, which last year struggled to maintain the strong growth momentum of the late noughties after resorts hiked their prices by 44 per cent and a trio of budget airline failures led to much reduced summer holiday capacity.

Sarah Munro said: “Although Turkey suffered a setback during 2010, it remains easily our third most popular currency after the euro and US dollar. It is encouraging that resort prices are down 20 per cent from the record high registered a year ago because families will be looking carefully at all aspects of their holiday budget and can be expected to react negatively to any suggestion of resort price rises.”

The Post Office Holiday Money Report tips an unexpected quartet of countries – Brazil, Mexico, Bali and Latvia – for success after their currencies topped the Post Office chart of Fastest Growing Currencies in 2010. It predicts that 2011 could be the year when Latin America hits the jackpot after recording heavy increases in sales of the Brazilian real (+60 per cent) and Mexican new peso (+38 per cent) over the past 12 months. Direct flights to Cancun and Costa Rica, introduced last autumn, have fuelled demand and these, together with competitively-priced package holidays, are expected to continue to do so.

Sarah Munro said: “Sales of the Mexican new peso rocketed by almost 140 per cent last autumn, indicating a strong surge in popularity for Mexico for the first time since the swine flu outbreak in spring 2009. We know UK tourists are on the lookout for value holidays so the combination of competitively-priced packages and low costs on the ground for meals and drinks make Mexican resorts a best buy at the moment.”

After seeing growth of over 25 per cent each for their currencies, the rupiah and the lats, the Post Office also expects Bali and Latvia to gain further ground at the expense of Thailand and Estonia, the newest member of the eurozone.

The Post Office Holiday Money Report, published by the UK’s largest provider of travel money, reviews travel trends for the past 12 months and identifies holiday hotspots for 2011, based on exchange rate trends and resort costs.

All major currencies are available at the Post Office. Over 70 currencies can be pre-ordered at 12,000 Post Office branches or online at www.postoffice.co.uk for next day branch or home delivery. 30 currencies are available over the counter at 1,600 larger Post Office branches, while an additional 2,600 offer US dollars and Turkish lira and a total of over 8,500 branches offer euros over the counter.
