Orion’s Inland Sea of Japan – Samurai, Sake and Soba
February 25, 2011 on 9:16 pm | In Adventure Travel, Asia, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Sailing | Comments OffOrion Expedition Cruises’ new ship Orion II will be making her inaugural voyages to Japan in June and July 2011. The ten night Inland Sea of Japan voyages live up the promise of a path less travelled, with the specialist expedition team introducing guests to insider experiences, many exclusive to Orion.
Orion II will visit Kanazawa, one of the few places in Japan where geisha culture is still alive, its 100 year old former geisha house retaining the look and feel of 19th century Japan. Guests will enjoy a traditional tea ceremony at Kenrokuen Garden, considered to be one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. Ponds, fountains, waterfalls, pagodas and bridges harmonise within landscaped gardens first established in the 17th century by the feudal lords of Kaga as their private garden.
Cruise the moat surrounding imposing Matsue Castle; learn to make Soba noodles; stroll the main street of Sakaiminato with hundreds of bronze statues depicting animated cartoon monsters and enjoy a visit to Sakai’s Sake brewery to sample their fine rice wine.
The path less travelled varies according to each voyage, including an introduction to the strict code of the samurai when guests meet a direct descendent of the Shoguns. Or guests may witness an extraordinary special event, the Sumo of the Bulls. Far from the barbaric Spanish bull rings, and in keeping with the respect shown to Ushioni, the great bull demon, participating bulls are treated with great respect. Two massive bulls pit their intuition against each other, locking horns until one of the bulls is brought to its knees, the other declared the victor.
Other experiences include traditional drumming with Japan’s best Taiko drum troupe, Kodo, and a trip in a Taraibune – round barrel boats traditionally used to collect abalone and other molluscs from narrow coves.
An added attraction on these voyages is a side-trip to Busan (South Korea) with its world renowned Jalgachi Fish Market, arguably the best of its kind in the world, where every kind of edible sea creature is on sale.
With Orion even traditional Japanese highlights have an unexpected twist. A visit to one of the most recognisable images of Japan, the large vermillion coloured O-Torii symbolic entrance gate to the Miyajima (Shrine Island) is itself visually spectacular, yet when Orion II visits guests will be treated to an exclusive Kagura performance, with sacred music and dance of traditional ceremonies held in Japanese shrines.
The visit to Hiroshima revolves around the Peace Park, Peace Museum and the A-Bomb Dome and includes meeting one of the few remaining survivors of the actual bombing who will relate personal experiences of that day and life since the bombing in Hiroshima (the lecture will be translated into English).
Art lovers will be excited when, in Kurashiki with its cobblestone streets and boutique shops lining the river, guests visit the Ōhara Museum of Art. Established in 1930 by Magosaburō Ōhara, the museum houses works by El Greco, Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, and Renoir.
Mixing traditional highlights with the unexpected – providing fascinating insights into the culture, history and geography of a region – is part of Orion’s DNA, revealed this time during inaugural expeditions to Japan.
PLEASE NOTE: some aspects of these itineraries may change as arrangements are finalised and not all shore experiences are included on each voyage – refer to Orion Expedition Cruises or your travel agent for detailed itineraries. Check for latest updates on www.orionexpeditions.com

First show villa now complete at Song Saa Private Island
February 25, 2011 on 9:03 pm | In Asia, Beachbooker, Cambodia | Comments OffSong Saa Private Island, Cambodia’s first luxury private island resort has recently completed the first mock-up villa.
“We are pleased to see the project’s steady progress. The completion of the first one-bedroom jungle villa marks a key milestone for Song Saa and illustrates the quality of development that we aim to achieve at the resort.” said Mr. Rory Hunter, CEO of Brocon, the Australian-owned company behind the development.
The upmarket resort is being built on Koh Ouen and Koh Bong in Cambodia’s pristine Koh Rong Archipelago. Upon completion, the resort will feature 25 rainforest, beach and over-water villas, each featuring a private pool. Adopting a ‘Rustic Chic’ design, the resort is inspired by Cambodian fishing villages with features such as over-water buildings, thatch roofs, use of rough-hewn natural timbers and drift wood, while offering the amenities and services one would expect from a five-star resort.
At the heart of the resort will be an over-water restaurant and lounge, positioned just off the island’s shoreline and surrounded by ocean. Other resort facilities include an infinity edged pool, gym, spa & wellness centre, yoga & meditation centre and a beachside water sports centre offering a range of activities such as sailing, diving, kayaking and snorkelling.
The resort commenced construction in March 2010 and is now well underway and on schedule to welcome guests in November 2011. The second show villa will also be completed by mid-February.
The first phase of villas was launched for sale through sole agent CB Richard Ellis in late 2009 and sold out within two months to a diverse mix of global investors spanning from Japan, Norway, UK and France. Following the success, the subsequent phase of one-bedroom over-water villas was launched in October 2010.
The villas offer a unique opportunity to acquire a special piece of real estate that is rarely offered elsewhere in the region. “While over-water villas are commonly seen in the Maldives, Song Saa is the first and only development at present to offer over-water villas for private ownership in Southeast Asia” said Rory.
The villas are also backed by an attractive investment proposition which offer investors an 8% guaranteed yield for five years – a superior rate in the region. The second phase of over-water villas has received strong interest from investors in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and the UK, with one sale now concluded, leaving only five-over-water villas remaining for sale.
“The quality of the completed show villa at Song Saa is unmatched by other product seen to date on Cambodia’s coastline and the development offers an opportunity for investors to get in early at the start of the development cycle.” said Mr. David Simister, Chairman, CB Richard Ellis Indochina.
Development on Cambodia’s coastline has been limited to date and tourism in Cambodia has been largely centred on Angkor Wat and Siem Reap. However, with regular airlift from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville scheduled to begin in March, this will be a major catalyst for growth in Sihanoukville and Cambodia’s south coast tourism. Song Saa is accessible by a 20-minute boat ride from the Sihanoukville port.
Alternatively, the resort can also be directly accessed by a one hour sea plane flight from Siem Reap. Brocon has recently finalised a deal with a sea plane operator to operate two daily flights to and from the island, making the resort extremely accessible for owners and hotel guests who can enjoy an extended beach holiday following their visit to Siem Reap.
With the resort scheduled for a November opening, a highly experienced team has been put into place to oversee the management of Song Saa Private Island. Heading the team is Jean-Paul Riby, the resort’s General Manager who is a specialist in small, remote luxury resorts with over 15 years of experience.
Even prior to the resort opening, Song Saa Private Island has already been selected as “The Hottest New Trips for 2011″ by the Financial Times, “Stylish, chic, and sexy: this year’s best new places to stay” by the Times and “2011 Where to go, what to do” by The Independent.
A limited number of over-water villas remain for sale through sole agent CB Richard Ellis.
Hong Kong’s Sun Tung Lok Restaurant Wins Three Michelin Stars
February 25, 2011 on 9:01 pm | In Asia, Beachbooker, Books Guidebooks, China, Dine Drink | Comments OffIn its storied century-old history, the Michelin Guide has awarded its coveted three stars to only two Chinese restaurants — both of them in Hong Kong. In the new, 2011 edition of the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macao, Sun Tung Lok joins Lung Keen Heen in the pantheon of three-star restaurants — meaning they offer exceptional cuisine worth a special journey. Lung Keen Heen, the first three-star Chinese restaurant, has held that position since 2008 — a feat in itself, since keeping Michelin stars is as difficult as acquiring them. Caprice, a French restaurant, also keeps its three-stars in the 2011 guide.
In the two-star category — restaurants with excellent cooking worth a detour to experience — two restaurants were promoted from the one-star category, Celebrity Cuisine and Pierre, and two others are new entries — Cuisine at the Mira and 81/2 Otto e Mezzo. The one-star category, for restaurants considered very good by this tough critic, includes five restaurants that were promoted from a simple listing in 2010, and nine restaurants entering the guide for the first time, with a star.
In all, the guide lists 215 restaurants and 42 hotels — including 64 new restaurants and two new hotels — for a total of 257 places to dine. Of the 64 new entries, 13 have been awarded Michelin stars. Almost any world cuisine can be found in Hong Kong, including most of the Asian specialties. The 2011 Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macao recognizes this by also listing more local eateries serving Cantonese roast meat, dumplings and congee. In addition, 55 simple shop restaurants are in the guide, some of them starred (giving Hong Kong more starred “cheap eats”), making them the most affordable starred restaurants in the world. Good value is also found in the Bib Gourmand category, reflecting Michelin inspectors’ favorites that offer top-quality cuisine at highly affordable prices, under $40.
Michelin inspectors visit each restaurant anonymously and repeatedly, making their decisions based on product quality, preparation and flavors, the cuisine’s personality, value for money and consistency over time and across the menu. Nearly 70 percent of the selected restaurants offer Chinese cuisine such Shanghainese, Pekingese, Sichuan, Cantonese and Chiu Chow.
In a Michelin-related development, in December Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific launched its “Chinese Chef Spectacular” program featuring Michelin-starred dishes and cuisine from Hong Kong through May, treating First and Business Class passengers to culinary creations from six of Hong Kong’s top Michelin-starred restaurants and their chefs as per the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau. Turkey to Host International Cycling Tour in Istanbul

The eight-stage event follows Turkey’s southwestern coastline, encompassing diverse terrain, from mountains to seaside fishing villages, and includes some of the country’s most famous tourism destinations, including Kusadasi, Bodrum, Marmaris, Pamukkale, Denizli and Fethiye. The course enables those who follow the international sports as well as the more casual traveler to experience a comprehensive sampling of Turkish culture, history and natural beauty while watching the sports event.
“Whether or not they are serious cycling fans, the Tour of Turkey is the perfect reason to visit Turkey and see many of our most famous destinations and landmarks during one of the most beautiful times of the year,” said Ebru Ejder, director of the Turkish Culture and Tourist Office in New York. “For cycling enthusiasts, this is the chance to watch one of the most important races in international racing, and enjoy a unique vacation at the same time.”
Presented by the Turkish Cycling Federation under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey and organized in compliance with the standards of the Cycling Tour of France since 2008, the event meets the 2. HC (Hors Category) of racing that is considered as the Champions League of world cycling by the International Cycling Union. For those who are unable to be at the event in person, international televised coverage of the race demonstrate that Turkey’s attractions extend far past Istanbul and include scenic resort towns offering tranquility and luxury on par with the world’s finest “sun-and-fun” getaway destinations.
