FOLLOW THE (MIDNIGHT) SUN ON A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPEDITION TO ARCTIC SVALBARD
April 8, 2011 on 8:30 am | In Adventure Travel, Cruise Boats, Norway | Comments OffLINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS OFFERS COMPLIMENTARY 2-DAY FJORDS
BY FLAM RAILWAY EXTENSION OR FREE CHARTER AIRFARE ON JUNE 30th DEPARTURE
NEW YORK, NY, March 2011 — Lindblad Expeditions has been introducing travelers to the wonders of Arctic Svalbard for over two decades. This summer, Land of the Ice Bears: An In-Depth Exploration of Arctic Svalbard will provide guests the most complete Arctic experience they can have and a complimentary two-day Fjords by Flam Railway adventure or free charter airfare on the June 30th departure.
The Land of the Ice Bears is an 11 day/9 night voyage aboard the 148-guest National Geographic Explorer, a fully-stabilized, state-of-the-art, ice-class vessel with the best Ice Team on earth. Departures for 2011 include June 9, 16, 22 and 30.
The voyage will travel to Arctic Svalbard, into the land of the midnight sun to a world of deep fjords, snow-capped mountains, massive ice sheets and the best place to view polar bears in their natural habitat — on the pack ice. During summer the tundra experiences a warm awakening carpeted with wildflowers and the thunderous sound of glacial ice crashing to the sea. Seabirds, reindeer, arctic fox, seals and great pods of walrus are out for up-close viewing, and with temperatures averaging from 30° to 45°F, the weather is good for walks, hikes, kayaking and Zodiac forays under the sun that never sets.
The complimentary two-day extension on the June 30th departure will combine the arctic landscapes of Land of the Ice Bears with Norway’s green fjordscapes and will explore the fjordlands from two perspectives: via Flam Railway, one of Europe’s most scenic rail journeys, and small boat. A must-do on any exploration of fjord country, the Flåm is one of the world’s steepest railway lines on normal gauge. It connects the mountain plateau of Myrdal down 2,838 feet to the town of Flåm, and provides some of Norway’s most magnificent scenery. The second day’s spectacular fjord cruise will provide a different perspective of the fjordlands with steep mountain slopes and cascading waterfalls at every bend.
In addition to the natural wonders the Land of the Ice Bears voyage promises, there is the extra advantage of extraordinary travel companions flanking Lindblad’s expert team throughout the season. They include Gil Grosvenor, Chairman of the National Geographic Society’s board of trustees and its
Education Foundation on the June 9th voyage; David Wright, filmmaker and winner of an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Filmmaking for his National Geographic film, The Great White Bear, on June 16th; Elizabeth Kolbert, staff writer for The New Yorker, her series on global warming, The Climate of Man, and her award-winning book, Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature and Climate Change make her presence on board highly relevant on the June 23rd voyage; and joining on the June 30th departure will be Richard Louv, whose book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, was the first voice heard in what is becoming an international dawn chorus of concern about the way children are deprived of nature. His soon to be released, The Nature Principle, shifts the focus from the children to adults in the discussion of the growing human disconnect from nature.
The complimentary two-day extension is for new bookings only on the June 30th departure. For guests not interested in the two- day extension, Lindblad Expeditions will provide roundtrip complimentary charter airfare from Oslo/Svalbard, which must be ticketed by Lindblad Expeditions. Rates for Land of the Ice Bears begin at $7,490 per person based on double occupancy.

Asia Transpacific Journeys Top Five Festivals
April 8, 2011 on 8:28 am | In Asia, Festivals, Pacific Islands, Webbandstand | Comments OffAccording to the recent Mendelsohn Affluent Study, demand for luxury consumer goods such as travel is back up. Asia Transpacific Journeys confirms that travel is the one purchase consumers still want to splurge on.
The company offers a variety of trips to the most intriguing and colorful festivals for travels to Asia, combining luxurious amenities with authentic and eye-opening ways of experiencing a culture.
Today’s travelers are looking to culturally immerse themselves in unique and intriguing destinations, and Marilyn Downing Staff, founder and president of the nation’s leading Asia tour company, says: “We consider travel and exploration to be one of the premier ways that one can connect with the expansively rich world around us.”
Ms. Downing Staff adds: “We owe it to ourselves to stay fascinated with our world and trips to festivals all throughout Asia are extraordinarily captivating once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”
Asia Transpacific offers both small group trips and custom tailored journeys to the below festivals and more:
• Tumbuna Sing Sing – Papua New Guinea – May 18-20, 2011
Taking part in this very obscure, supremely authentic and un-touristed village sing-sing, in which locals in their wildly flamboyant costumes, plumage and make-up compete for prestige in a splash of color and a chorus of song, is a surreal and exclusive experience.
• Kandy Esala Perahera Festival – Sri Lanka – August 11-14, 2011
One of Asia’s greatest festivals, this spectacular medieval pageant culminates in a procession of Kandyan dancers and drummers in colorful traditional costumes and more than one hundred caparisoned elephants, carrying the Sacred Tooth Relic, said to be Buddha’s.
• Jakar Tsechu Festival – Bhutan – November 2-4, 2011
Attending Jakar Festival is a rare and wonderful experience with dancers wearing ancient, magically charged masks and streaming costumes depicting compassionate and wrathful deities, that are thought to bring blessings and protection to the audience.
• Takayama Festival – Japan – April 14-15 and October 9-10, 2011
Considered one of the most beautiful festivals in Japan, this 400-year-old Shinto festival impresses visitors with its majestic floats dating to the 17th century and its magnificent life size marionettes, with an ancient form of levers made from whale bone, that sing and dance.
• Pushkar Camel Fair – India – November 6-7, 2011
This fair is a captivating blend of color and activity, from sacred bathing rituals to camel races. It attracts livestock traders from all over western India, as well as mystics and musicians, camel-wallahs and priests, and vendors plying their wares from the far corners of Rajasthan.

NAIROBI, Kenya—The name ‘Kenya’ conjures up images of brilliant sunsets, the vast and wide-open space of the plains, a colorful culture, and some of the most fascinating animals in the world. Many travelers dream of taking a classic African safari, and Kenya offers some amazing opportunities to see rare wildlife in their natural habitat. Bush and Beyond, specialists in Kenya travel, recommends these four amazing animal encounters for 2011:
See The Endangered Black Rhino In The Wild
To date, there are only about 609 black rhinos left in the Kenya wilderness, but travelers can see wild black rhinos at Kenya’s Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Lewa Wilderness, one of Kenya’s greatest private conservation success stories, lies at the foot of stunning Mount Kenya and offers travelers some of the best wildlife viewing in Kenya. In addition to the endangered black rhino and big game, Lewa is also home to the endangered Grevy’s Zebra and the Sitatunga. Aside from classic game drives, guests can enjoy horseback safaris, escorted bush walks, camel walks, cultural visits with local communities, and much more.
Experience Some of the World’s Largest Elephants
ol Donyo Lodge is in the heart of the 275,000 acre Mbirikani Group Ranch, located on the slopes of the Chyulu Hills National Park between the Amboseli and Tsavo West National Parks in southeast Kenya. Its location offers full views of Mount Kilimanjaro and is in the path of traditional wildlife migration routes. In addition to activities like cultural visits, “Big Five” wildlife viewing and tracking, horseback riding and mountain biking, ol Donyo offers visitors the chance to get a birds-eye view of the mighty elephants and other wildlife from their unique wildlife-viewing blinds that have been built near the animal watering holes.
See African Wild Dogs, One of The Most Endangered Animal On The Planet
Ol Malo is situated on the northern edge of the Laikipia plateau nestled into a rugged escarpment looking out across Kenya’s Northern Frontier District. These miles of dense thorn bush are showered by the shy, elusive antelope from which the lodge takes its name, “the place of the Greater Kudu”. In addition to classic safari game drives, horseback riding, mountain biking, community visits, and swimming, guests have a rare chance to see African Wild Dogs, one of the most endangered species on the planet, in their natural habitat. Ol Malo is heavily involved in the Wild Dog Project, and the Laikipia area has around 300 adult wild dogs and a number of pups and yearlings, offering travelers a truly unique animal encounter.
Lions, Leopards, and Cheetahs in the Masai Mara
No place may be more sacred to wildlife viewing enthusiasts than the Masai Mara. Mara Plains Camp is a six-room tented camp that is located within the private Olare Orok Conservancy, just a few hundred meters to the north of the Masai Mara National Reserve boundary. The camp is situated along the Ntiakatek River with views of the surrounding plains and riverine forest. Private game drives in fully-equipped Landcruisers, and guided game walks offer guests some of the most amazing animal encounters within the Mara, including sightings of cheetahs, leopards, and lions in the wild, in addition to other fascinating wildlife like hyenas, wildebeests, and antelope.

Aboard the M/Y Grace Commemorating Grace Kelly’s 55th Wedding Anniversary
Four Special Eight Day Cruises for April 2011
Will Ply the Waters of the Galapagos in a Style Befitting Royalty
Tahoe City, CA, March 28, 2011 – Active cruise specialist AdventureSmith Explorations, http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/ the travel company that secures matches between adventure-seeking clients and a treasure trove of small expedition ships, announces a series of celebrity commemorative cruises in the Galapagos this April.
Four themed expeditions aboard M/Y Grace honor the occasion of the April 19, 1955, wedding of Hollywood royalty Grace Kelly to Monaco’s Prince Rainier. They then honeymooned on this 146-foot luxury yacht that was gifted to them by Aristotle Onassis.
Guests will be welcomed with champagne and Ecuadorian chocolates along with conservation lectures by scientists of the Darwin Foundation. Each guest will receive a photo book of the expedition covering the history of the vessel and details of the royal couple’s honeymoon.
“The M/Y Grace is widely considered one of the most romantic ships to cruise in the Galapagos,” claims Todd Smith, founder and president of AdventureSmith Explorations. “We have always recommended this ship to couples on honeymoon or celebrating a special anniversary. These special departures will make the experience even more special.”
M/Y Grace offers nine spacious staterooms of up to 200 square feet to accommodate 16 guests. All staterooms feature private bathrooms, individual climate controls, safe boxes, telephones and plenty of storage space for clothing and luggage. See:
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/accommprofile.php/d/galapagos/accid/295
The dates set aside for this special cruise are: April 2 – 9, April 9 – 16, April 16 – 23, and April 23 – 30, 2011. Per person, double rates begin at $6,795 for this luxury experience. AdventureSmith is currently offering $500 off per cabin on these special departures. See:
http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/199
The Grace cruise packages begin and end in colonial Quito, Ecuador and include Quito hotel accommodations, airport/hotel transfers, round trip flights from mainland Ecuador to the Galapagos Islands and a half day tour of the Quito’s old town, a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.
About the M/Y Grace
Although M/Y Grace looks as young and chic today as the princess who honeymooned aboard her in the 1950s, she is nonetheless what the French call “une femme d’un certain age” born in 1928, just before The Crash silenced the Roaring Twenties. She has surrendered none of her youth’s glamour to the scars and wrinkles of a gallant life, including a stint chasing submarines during World War II. Combat aged on her, but benefactors like Aristotle Onassis, John Issa, and Prince Rainier ensured she was kept in the style to which she was accustomed. Now, as the M/Y Grace, she plies the waters of the Galapagos Islands, once again the elegant hostess to carefree, adventurous, perfect parties.
