April 8, 2011 on 7:55 am | In Asia, Japan, Webbandstand | Comments Off

Songwriters John Mulhern and Andy Lalasis develop JAPAN a song/video to honor the people of Japan. Mulhern and Lalasis team up with Grammy-winning producer Joe Donofrio to release JAPAN. Proceeds from the song will benefit the people of Japan and go to the Japanese Red Cross.

A composition by John Mulhern and Andy Lalasis called “Japan” has been released to help aid and support the victims of the immense tragedy that effected the people of Japan and their proud country. Both John and Andy were deeply moved by the events that have befallen this country and thus created this film as an Anthem to the Japanese people and are urging viewers to contribute to the Japanese Red Cross. JAPAN itself was an original tune written by Lalasis and Mulhern in 1989. The song features some of the best musicians in the country including John Mulhern – Guitar, Andy Lalasis – Acoustic Bass, Michael Pedicin – Tenor Sax, Barry Miles – Acoustic Piano & Keyboards and Keith Hollis – Drums. The entire project was produced by Joe Donofrio.

The video was edited by Shane Reed (ssnrmusic reed on Face Book) and Matthew Verderose.

Murcia’s Paramount Pictures Theme Park

April 8, 2011 on 7:53 am | In London, Scotland, Theme Parks Zoos Aquariums, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

In an official ceremony on Friday 25 March, the masterplan for the first Paramount Pictures-branded Theme Park in Europe was unveiled and 2015 was revealed as the expected opening date for the hugely significant project.

MALAGA, SPAIN – In an official function on Friday 25 March, the masterplan for the first Paramount Pictures-branded Theme Park in Europe was unveiled. Attended by the Executive Vice President for Licensing at Paramount Pictures Michael Bartok, President of the Region of Murcia Ramón Luis Valcárcel and President for Murcia’s Flagship Projects Jesus Samper, the ceremony revealed 2015 as the expected opening date for the hugely significant project.

Destined for a 158 hectare site on the Mazarron/Alhama de Murcia border some 15 minutes from the beach and marina resort of Puerto de Mazarron, the Theme Park will be zoned into different thematic areas inspired by the likes of Star Trek, Titanic and Mission Impossible plus a much larger ‘Lifestyle Centre’ with no less than two five-star hotels, three of four-star status and several more three-star resorts. Also announced were themed shopping malls, restaurants, bars and clubs, a conference centre with the largest meeting room capacity in Murcia – over 3,000 seats – and an open-air auditorium to host 15,000 people.

Chris Mercer, Director of Murcia-based Mercers headquartered in Mazarron, comments, “It is indeed a huge privilege to be the recipient of a landmark Theme Park in the local area that will rival Disneyland Paris and attract millions of visitors each year. It’s also highly encouraging to follow the progress that has been made on the masterplan in terms of design, investment and timescales. Samper estimated on Friday that the project would directly create 10,000 construction jobs and upon opening, many more. Undoubtedly Paramount will have a positive effect locally – not least on the property market and house values. We have been through some hard times but Paramount’s confidence and faith proves that the lure and attraction of Spain will prevail.”

Indeed Bartok reiterated that Spain was “key” to his company and highlighted Murcia’s 300 sunny days each year as a major bonus. Meanwhile Valcárcel was quick to make reference to the current economic climate in his speech saying that the Theme Park was being launched “with the support and enthusiasm of some and the doubt of others”. He felt that in times of crisis what you cannot do is “stand still” and “while the road is tough, the outcome is sure.” It is reported that Flagship Projects and Paramount Pictures have signed the license agreement for 30 years – renewable for an unspecified period.

Oldest Horse Show in the Nation Celebrates 157 Years

April 8, 2011 on 7:52 am | In Festivals, The South, Webbandstand | Comments Off

The Upperville Colt & Horse Show (UCHS) is the oldest horse show in America.

MIDDLEBURG, VA, — Since 1853, equestrians, horse breeders and spectators have gathered under the Grafton oaks in Upperville to admire some of the nation’s most talented horses and riders. The Upperville Colt & Horse Show (UCHS) is the oldest horse show in America. It was founded to encourage better breeding of horses.

The one-day show, which began with a few breeding classes, has grown into a weeklong tradition with classes for children, adults and families. Each year beneath the oaks at Grafton Farm, more than 2,000 horse and rider combinations compete throughout the week. The show raises funds for the Upperville Volunteer Fire Department and other area charities.

Once again, the event will recognize outstanding individuals and horses that have contributed to the UCHS goals through participation, horsemanship, leadership or service. Individuals and horses will be named to the Wall of Honor that remains on display on the show grounds during the entire event. The wall itself was made from a fallen oak tree from the show grounds property. “This is our opportunity to recognize the many individuals and horses who have made this unique event so spectacular,” states Tommy Jones, the show’s organizer.

The 158th Upperville Colt & Horse Show takes place on June 6-12. The week culminates with the $100,000 Upperville Jumper Classic, which draws top riders from across the nation. The Jumper Classic will be held on Sunday, June 12 at 2:30 pm.

Prior to the Jumper Classic, the Pedigree Country Fair will take place on Sunday from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm with pony rides and games for the kids. Other entertaining events include the Jack Russell Terrier races, Basset Hound demonstrations, and horse drawn carriages. Plan to bring the family, be entertained, browse and shop the food and retail vendors – just spend the day in some of Virginia’s most beautiful countryside.

Gates open at 8 am throughout the week. Admission is $10 per person. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Classes throughout the week are fun to watch especially the Ladies Side Saddle and young children’s classes on Saturday. Bring a picnic or purchase food on the grounds. A variety of food vendors and retailers will be on site.

Viewers can also catch the excitement via a live Web cast of the hunter and jumper rings. Classes will start each day at 8 a.m. and continue through 5 p.m.

To get there, from Washington, DC take I-66 west to Route 50 West (Exit 57B) toward Winchester, Va. Drive approximately 25 miles to Middleburg and continue on Route 50 to Upperville and the show grounds. Also located just 30 minutes from Dulles International Airport. Take Route 28 from the airport to Route 50 west and follow as above. Follow signs for parking. For information, call 540-687-5740 or 540-592-3858.
