Las Vegas, Nev. – The UNLV Choral Ensembles present their final performance of the 2010-2011 concert season with a “Grand Finale” Spring Concert on Sunday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Rando Recital Hall located on the northeast end of the university campus in the Lee & Thomas Beam Music Center. This performance features a wide variety of music presented by the University Concert Singers, Nightingales, Women’s Chorus and Varsity Men’s Glee Club.
The Concert Singers perform inspirational works by American composers Aaron Copland and F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the famed St. Olaf Choir. Swiss composer Frank Martin’s haunting “Kyrie” from the Mass for Double Choir will be offered, along with Ethan Sperry’s “Desh” (or “Sleep”) which incorporates elements of a traditional Indian raga along with harmonic overtone singing. The Women’s Chorus and Nightingales feature the classic “Pueri Hebraeorum” by American composer Randall Thompson and “Regina Caeli” by William Hawley, plus musical theatre and African-American spiritual selections. The Varsity Men’s Glee Club will sing rousing male chorus songs by Romantic composers Franz Schubert and Carl Maria von Weber, along with “Silent Noon” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “Open Wide Your Eyes” by John David Earnest, and a rousing novelty number, “A Man’s Best Friend Is His Horse.”
Under the musical leadership of conductors Jocelyn K. Jensen and David B. Weiller, the university choral ensembles enjoy a reputation for vibrant performances. The choirs recently were praised for a concert described as “…glorious, yet disciplined. The choruses performed with unaffected charisma.” Annual tours have encompassed the southwestern United States as well as Hawaii, New York, Mexico, and Canada. Past highlights include holiday performances with the world-renowned Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and participation in a massed choir performance in New York City’s Carnegie Hall.
Tickets for the May 1 “Grand Finale” concert may be purchased at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office or by calling 895-ARTS. General admission is $10; senior citizens, military and UNLV faculty/staff tickets are $8. Students from the university and the Clark County School District may receive one free ticket by presenting valid student identification at the box office.
