Innovative Event Ideas & Information Just One Click Away

May 21, 2011 on 11:48 pm | In Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, Sydney | Comments Off

A need for greater speed and access to destination information in preparing event tenders was the catalyst behind Nicole Wayman’s innovative new website, Event Planners Network.

From her north Queensland home in Port Douglas, Nicole Wayman put to work her 17 years of tourism and event management experience to create a one-stop website for event planners that is a first of its kind and has the ability to save valuable hours of research time.

“What we have is a website geared to the meetings, incentives and events industry showcasing Australian destinations for corporate groups. Instead of wasting time researching website after website of different product, we do it for you and share all event options available in each destination – be they concepts, tours, ideas, team building activities, dining themes or conference, incentive and partner programs.

“In addition to our „Ideas Corner, which is unique to EPN, the site features job listings, industry news, forums, event and familiarisation noticeboards and great deals for members,” she said.

According to Nicole, EPN will benefit all MICE professionals from professional conference organisers to hotel event managers while industry suppliers can use (the „Ideas Corner‟) to creatively promote their product to corporate clients.

Other benefits include a comprehensive directory of suppliers thanks to a free advertising partner listing level, insight into unique venues that include private residences and properties, a members review option for products and services and daily, home page spotlight on an individual advertising partner’s business that is free to Showcase level advertising partners.

Denise McQueen, conference and events manager for Hallmark Conferences and Events in Melbourne says, “Congratulations to Nicole and her team for designing this informative, innovative and long awaited website. I can see that it will greatly ease the pressure of researching destinations and experiences that are both unique and memorable. All the work has been done for us and what‟s more, is specific to our industry.”

Event Planners Network is free to join with the membership benefits including great deals from advertising partners, site updates and e-newsletters.

The Free listing does enable advertising partners to post information in EPN‟s Ideas Corner while the three higher levels (Light $55 per year, Spotlight $110 per year and Showcase $275 per year) have added benefits including a free, business to business marketing opportunity to advertise special offers and great deals.

EPN’s creator, Nicole Wayman said she is now seeking submissions for her website’s „Ideas Corner. The only criteria is a detailed description of the activity posted and the business must be listed in the directory.

In Short, What is EPN?

Event Planners Network (EPN) is a new, business-to-business marketplace, networking and research platform specifically designed to simplify the process for industry colleagues worldwide that pitch, plan and manage events in Australia. As the first one-stop web platform for the Meetings, Incentives, Conference (MICE) industry it comprises a business directory, ideas corner, forum, job board, news desk, great deals page and event and familiarisation notice board.

Top 10 Favourite UK Olympic Venues

May 21, 2011 on 11:46 pm | In London, Sports Travel, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Olympic Park, East London

The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics may still be a little way away, but work is well under way at the Olympic Park in East London. The site includes the already iconic 80,000 seat Olympic Stadium, the graceful Aquatics Centre and the Velodrome. If you’d like to see the site’s dramatic transformation in progress, you can take a tour with knowledgeable Blue Badge Guides. Alternatively get along to the open days from 22-24 July.

Football stadiums, UK-wide

The London 2012 Football competitions will be held at stadiums throughout the country. Catch the games at Hampden Park in Glasgow; Millennium Stadium in Cardiff; Old Trafford in Manchester; St James’ Park in Newcastle; Villa Park in Birmingham and Wembley Stadium in London, where the finals will take place. If you want to experience the thrill of British football right now, take a stadium tour or catch a Premier League game.

Horse Guards Parade, London

Beach Volley Ball comes to 10 Downing Street! That’s right – the high-energy beach sport will take place on Horse Guards Parade, the parade ground for the Queen’s bodyguards that’s next door to the Prime Minister’s house. It’s an unlikely mix, we admit, but one we’re very proud of. Head to Horse Guards Parade on 11 June 2011 and 16 June 2012 for Trooping the Colour, the Queen’s spectacular birthday ceremony.

Lord’s Cricket Ground, London

Lord’s Cricket Ground in North West London will be transformed into an Archery range for 2012. Crowds of 6,500 will enjoy the competition with two fields of play inside the stadium. Visit Lords to see the tiny Ashes urn, hotly contested by England and Australia, the stuffed sparrow ‘bowled out’ by Jahangir Khan and cricketing kit worn by many of the game’s greatest players. You can also tour players’ dressing rooms and see the famous Lord’s Honours Board that records great performances at the ground. And don’t forget Lord’s is also Britain’s most famous venue for county and international cricket!

North Greenwich Arena, London

You probably know the North Greenwich Arena as the O2 Arena. During the Games, it will seat 20,000 spectators for the Basketball final and 16,500 for the Gymnastics. Outside the Olympics, this huge dome by the Thames hosts pop concerts and is home to the British Music Experience, the interactive, immersive celebration of UK pop.
Hyde Park, London

Hyde Park, one of London’s Royal Parks, will host the Triathlon course in 2012. Triathlon is among the fastest-growing individual sports in the UK, and thousands of people will line the route to spectate for free during the races. The park itself is one of the largest parks in London, a haven of relaxation in the middle of the city. Don’t miss Speakers’ Corner where people come to air their views and exercise their right to free speech, and the Diana Fountain, a memorial to Princess Diana.

Weymouth & Portland Harbour, Dorset

Weymouth & Portland Harbour in Dorset, on England’s South East coast, will be the venue for the 2012 Sailing and Paralympic Sailing competitions. Weymouth and Portland Harbour provides some of the best natural sailing waters in Britain and during the Games you’ll be able to watch the action for free. If you’d like to try sailing yourself you can book a lesson at the world-class Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy. This part of Dorset is also on the Jurassic Coast, Britain’s first natural World Heritage Site, a stretch of coastline where exposed cliffs and geological wonders give you an insight into millennia of natural history.

Lee Valley White Water Centre, London

The White Water Centre that will host the London 2012 Olympic canoe slalom competition opens to the public on 22 April. It’s the only brand new London 2012 venue that non-Olympic competitors will be able to use before the Games. Get in on the action before the pros and try canoeing, kayaking or white water rafting at this state of the art facility in the Lee Valley Park.

Wimbledon, London

Wimbledon in South East London will be used for the Tennis competition at the 2012 Games. Up to 30,000 people will be able to watch the players compete. The sacred turf of Wimbledon’s Centre Court has seen some of the greatest tennis matches ever played. Highlights at the club’s museum include the Championship Trophies, a 200° cinema screen and a ‘walk-through’ of the men’s dressing room as it was in the 1980s, with John McEnroe.

Greenwich Park, London

Greenwich Park will host the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian competitions, plus the combined running and shooting event of the Modern Pentathlon. The park has got to have one of the best-looking riverside locations in London and is home to the Royal Observatory, the home of Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian of the World, making it the official starting point for each new day and year. Greenwich itself is a World Heritage Site and is also the home to the National Maritime Museum and Christopher Wren’s graceful Old Royal Naval College.

Executive Retreats in Queensland

May 21, 2011 on 11:45 pm | In Australia, Beachbooker, Queensland | Comments Off

For Executive Retreats it’s business as usual despite the clean-up necessary after Cyclone Yasi – just in time for the launch of www.coupleretreats.com.au showcasing some of the most idyllic hideaways in tropical Far North Queensland.

Cyclone Yasi set the chainsaws buzzing non-stop in the beautiful Port Douglas/Mossman/Daintree area of tropical Far North Queensland where Executive Retreats offers the most gorgeous properties from beachfront to rainforest and beyond.

“We were incredibly lucky,” says Executive Retreats’ owner Wendy van der Wolf. “The winds caused great damage to vegetation, slicing across the rainforest and the whole region in great fingers – we had many fallen trees and branches but miraculously only very minor structural damage to a couple of our properties.”

Wendy and Hans van der Wolf created Executive Retreats to offer unsurpassable luxury for discerning guests from all over the world with some of Australia’s most prestigious architecturally award-winning houses in their portfolio.

“The emphasis is on personalised, first class service,” says Wendy, “so our guests know that they can ask us to arrange anything they require for their stay from personal chefs to personalised tours and experiences. We meet and greet our guests and our specialised staff are on call at any time while assuring guests their privacy – the most precious thing in the world for many.”

Luxurious and secluded holiday homes, villas or opulent 5-star apartments – each property is different, but all have a tropical feel reflecting the unique surroundings of this wonderful part of Queensland.

Wendy van der Wolf speaks with the whole area in mind when she says: “Anyone considering a break, longer holiday or romantic getaway should think Queensland now.

“Our new website, Couple Retreats www.coupleretreats.com.au
provides information on very special romantic getaways for the most discerning traveller. We may have lost a few trees but we’re still one of the most romantic destinations in the world between the rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, so come and celebrate “the art of loving.”

What’s In a Wedding and a Name? Plenty, at Melbourne’s Hotel Windsor

May 21, 2011 on 11:41 pm | In Australia, Victoria, Weddings Honeymoons | Comments Off

What’s in a royal wedding? For Melbourne’s famous Hotel Windsor, the forthcoming wedding of Britain’s Prince William to fiancée Kate Middleton on April 29, is a rare opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate its unique heritage.

After all, the 128-year-old property, Australia’s only surviving grand hotel, owes its current name to the royal Windsor family. On June 3 1920, the hotel, then known as the Grand, hosted a luncheon attended by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales. In 1923 was renamed the Windsor, apparently to remind visitors and guests of such a pre-eminent association with royalty.

Or, as hotel management put it at the time: “The very name of Windsor is inspiring, as it brings to mind the great ancient castle where English royalty have for centuries sought peace and comfort. Just as Windsor Castle is characteristic of the English race, so does the Hotel Windsor typify the dignity of the city of Melbourne.”

So, it’s hardly surprising the Hotel Windsor has come up with a special offer to celebrate April’s royal wedding.

Throughout that month guests can stay in one of the hotel’s seven luxurious Victorian suites, enjoy French sparkling Rose on arrival, a full room-service breakfast and a $2,000 voucher for Hardy Brothers Jewellers – the only Australian jeweller in the southern hemisphere to hold the Queen’s Royal Warrant. Total package cost is $2,599.

The hotel’s Victorian suites are more stately residence than anything resembling a conventional hotel room, and include a huge master bedroom, second bedroom, lounge room and dining room. All are adorned with magnificent Victorian antiques and artwork.

“The history of The Hotel Windsor is so richly entwined with the history of Melbourne and with the great events and people of the last 100 and more years,” hotel CEO and general manager David Perry said. “It seems fitting to mark the forthcoming royal wedding in some way because it does have resonance for some people. And perhaps it will inspire a few gentlemen to plan to pop the question themselves.”

For further information visit www.thehotelwindsor.com.au

The 180-room Hotel Windsor was built in 1883, pre-dating some of the world’s leading grand hotels including the Savoy in London, which was built in 1889, the Waldorf Astoria in New York which dates back to 1893 and the Ritz Paris which opened in 1898.

Taste the Kimberley at El Questro Homestead

May 21, 2011 on 11:36 pm | In Australia, Cabinweb, Western | Comments Off

Guests staying at the exclusive El Questro Homestead this year will be invited to join Executive Chef Alan Groom in the kitchen to learn his culinary tips.

El Questro Homestead occupies a pocket of luxury in the Kimberley region in the million acre El Questro Wilderness Park, 110 km from Kununurra.

El Questro Wilderness Park is preparing to open for its 20th season in April – the official end of the annual wet season, leaving gorges and rivers full, and wildlife in full bloom.

The luxury six-room Homestead is dramatically cantilevered over the Chamberlain River, set amid a landscape of salt plains, gorges, hot thermal springs and the backdrop of the Cockburn Ranges.

Groom, who is originally from the English city of Leeds but spent 20 years cooking in Canada, has been the Homestead chef for eight years with Canadian partner and Homestead manager Lori Litwack.

Taking full advantage of his spectacular surroundings, and a new kitchen for the 2011 season, Groom peppers his menus with an extensive range of local produce sourced from the abundant Kimberley area.

He turns wild rosella flowers, which bloom throughout the million acre El Questro Wilderness Park from May to August, into chutneys and sauces, giving everything a natural pinky red colour.

Groom uses crunchy baby boab root, which tastes like water chestnut or jicama (yam bean), raw in salads and salsas, also roasting and caramelizing it like a parsnip. The prolific edible yellow kapok flowers from the region are pressed between filo pastry and served with a cheese starter.

Groom is also famed for his flatbreads, 30cm-long strips, baked with dukkah and sea salt with a flaky texture. However, early morning baking demands an early wake up call for anyone interested in joining Groom!

Wild, saltwater barramundi from Wyndham, 100 km away is always on the menu at El Questro Homestead and it would be rare for a guest not to enjoy a barra during their stay. A favourite dish that guests should not leave without trying is the barramundi with green mango and boab root salsa.

Dining at the Homestead is done under the stars, at either of the large communal tables by the pool and on the verandah, or on one of the three private tables by the gorge edge. Guests staying in the private Chamberlain Gorge Suite can also choose to have dinner served in their room.

As a treat, guests can dine at one of the incredibly romantic tables on the edge of the gorge, overlooking the river, and with a soundtrack of owls and frogs.

Hours can be whiled away lazing by the pool or by taking advantage of one of the many activities included in the tariff, such as exclusive use of the Zebedee hot thermal springs, or the 4WD tour to Branco’s Lookout, or perhaps they’d simply enjoy taking a tinnie and heading down the Chamberlain River on a balmy afternoon.

El Questro Homestead opens from 1 April to 31 October every year.
