Seven Skies Adds Mystical Bhutan to its Collection
June 26, 2011 on 1:31 pm | In Adventure Travel, Asia, Bhutan, London, United Kingdom | Comments OffSeven Skies Luxury Adventure Travel has added mystical Bhutan to its exclusive collection, the breathtakingly beautiful land that remains relatively untouched by tourism and every bit as stunning as the enchanted, storybook kingdom of imagination.
Bhutan’s ancient culture is scattered throughout a mountainous landscape threaded with spectacular glacial valleys, overlooked by the Himalayas and boasting some of the world’s most exotic alpine and temperate plant and animal species, with a people who continue to live as they’ve done so for thousands of years.
By handpicking unique cultural and adventure experiences that incorporate luxury accommodation and cuisine prepared by world-class chefs in locations throughout the country, the Seven Skies 15 day hosted journey takes visitors into the best that this fabled land has to offer. Highlights in
clude:
• Travel through the panoramic, rugged Black Mountains and Phobjikha Valley, winter home of the endangered black necked crane, on the way to Gangtey Goemba, an ornately decorated hilltop monastery before heading east to the four valleys of Bumthang.
• Cycle along scenic rural backroads across this cultural heartland, enjoying gourmet morning and afternoon teas (think lime cakes with passionfruit syrup) and picnic lunches in breathtaking locations, dotted with willow and hemlock trees, whitewashed farmhouses, archery grounds, green terraced fields and billowing prayer flags.
• Trek to the spectacular and remote 8th Century Bumdra Monastery and stay overnight at 3,800m in a luxury tented camp, complete with queen beds covered in featherdown quilts and high thread-count linen, camp butlers, Bhutanese hand textile cushions and rugs, steaming hot showers, roaring fires, and five star dining prepared by a world-class chef.
• Visit the Tiger’s Nest Monastery on descent, also known as Taktsang and one of the country’s most recognized spiritual links to its Buddhist religion and culture. Take in the rolling panorama from the comfort of a luxury vehicle, custom fitted with fully-reclining armchairs and first class refreshments to soak up this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
• Rest and relax in the most intimate collection of luxury mountain sanctuaries, ranging from the saffron-walled Taj Tashi in Thimphu and the indulgent Amankora lodgesto COMO’s iconic Uma Paro.
• Take in the views from Cheli La pass at 3,810m and hike down to the ancient Kila Nunnery for a gourmet picnic lunch, before changing the pace to free-wheel for miles on bicycles through the picturesque Paro Valley back into town, fringed by rhododendrons, firs and pine forests against the snowcapped mountain backdrop.
• Experience an extraordinary Tsechu festival, where Bhutanese come from far and wide in traditional dress of gho (male) and kira (female) to celebrate Buddhist mythology. These festivals are staged for locals in ancient dzongs (public spiritual houses), with stories told by the monks through elaborate and entrancing dances, and are described as amongst the world’s most authentic and engaging travel experiences.
This Seven Skies 15 day hosted and fully inclusive Bhutan journey is priced from $14,995 per person, twin share (excluding airfares). Bookings www.sevenskies.com.au or 07 3160 5484.

June 26, 2011 on 1:27 pm | In Adventure Travel, Africa, Asia, Canada, Indonesia, London, Ontario, Quebec, South Africa, Thailand, Toronto, United Kingdom | Comments OffLooking for an adventurous family holiday for this summer, and ticked most of Europe off the list already, then why not head further afield? Bridge & Wickers (020 7483 6555, www.bridgeandwickers.co.uk ) has a whole host of family-friendly destinations from Australia to South Africa that promise to make the most of this precious time together as a family. Combining touring and exploring with plenty of relaxation time, there are holidays to suit everyone.
HOT HOLIDAYS
AUSTRALIA – Despite the fact that most Brits think of Australia as a place to go in the winter, the whole top half of the torso is at its weather-best in our summer, which is perfect for families tied to the school holidays.
Families can combine the tropical north with the iconic sights of Sydney and the Red Centre on Bridge & Wickers’ July or August Three Weeker touring break. Beginning with five days of family fun in Sydney, families then move to the Red Centre for a touring discovery of Uluru, before heading far north for an overnight in Darwin.
Next up, adventurous families soak up the spirit of Crocodile Dundee with a three-day camping-in-comfort trip to Kakadu National Park to discover colourful rock art, the remote Jim Jim Falls – accessible only by four wheel drive – and guaranteed crocodile sightings. End the trip on a high with six nights on the Queensland coast at Port Douglas, with easy access to the Great Barrier Reef. Here families can choose to relax on the beaches, or for the more active there are opportunities for snorkelling, diving, white water rafting, hot air ballooning, and riding on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
Price: From £3,424 per adult and £3,144 per child based on a family of four sharing, including international flights with Qantas (Heathrow-Sydney / Cairns-Heathrow),17 nights’ accommodation (15 room only, 2 full board), domestic flights, return airport transfers throughout and Red Centre Tour. Price valid for summer 2011 holidays.
CANADA – For families seeking adventure, Canada offers easy access to the great outdoors, with superb walking, kayaking and sailing.
This summer Bridge & Wickers is offering fantastic savings for families visiting the must-see highlights of Eastern Canada – with kids staying for free. Just under eight hours’ flying time from the UK, Toronto is the gateway to premier league touring, with Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Tremblant and Montreal all within easy reach by road.
Collect a comfortable SUV in Toronto and set off to discover the province of Ontario, with stays at the magnificent Niagara Falls, the cottage country of Muskoka with its lakes, rivers, waterfalls and the historic capital, Ottawa.
Cross the border into Quebec which boasts a million lakes, 100,000 miles of river and 6,000 miles of coastline where families can enjoy a whole host of activities from riding to rafting with stays in idyllic Tremblant, where the skiing paradise offers a selection of scenic hiking trails in the summer, and cosmopolitan Montreal, a fitting finale.
Price: from £2,448 per adult and £799 per child (under 12 years) based on 2x adults and 2x children sharing, including international flights with Air Canada (Heathrow-Toronto/Montreal-Heathrow), 14 nights’ room only accommodation and 10 days’ SUV car hire. Includes free accommodation for kids. Valid for travel in July & August 2011.
SOUTH AFRICA – Children of all ages, and their parents, will be captivated by the thrill of KwaZulu Natal which showcases the best of South Africa in one compact province. KwaZulu Natal is at its best during the UK summer, meaning families can take advantage of the optimal safari conditions in the Kruger, the warm waters of the KwaZulu Natal coast and excellent value for money. Bridge & Wickers has selected its most family-friendly places to stay and combined them with a ‘Big Five’ safari adventure to offer a fabulous two week self-drive holiday.
Among the highlights are: a guided walk to spot giraffe, zebra, wildebeest; the chance to swim and snorkel in the warm waters of Kosi Bay; a safari to the Tembe Elephant Reserve; 4WD into the Drakensberg mountains; a visit to the traditional fish traps where families have the chance to spear their own dinner; game drives in Umfolozi Park; a kayak safari; whale watching; and discovering the compelling history that the Zulu Wars and Rorke’s Drift has to offer.
Price: from £7,985 for a family of 4 (2x adults and 2x children under 12), including return international flights (Heathrow–Jo’Burg/Durban-Heathrow), 13 nights’ accommodation with most meals, 14 days’ car hire and scheduled activities. Valid throughout August 2011.
THAILAND – Though Thailand is perhaps better known as a winter sun destination, Koh Samui is actually one of the few places that is at its weather best in our summer, and provides an idyllic playground of beaches and culture for families, where no building stands higher than the tallest palm tree.
Begin by spending three days exploring Bangkok’s mix of attractions from the Grand Palace and the Bridge on the River Kwai to a boat trip along the labyrinth of canals and participating in a Thai cookery class.
Families are then transferred by plane to the tropical paradise of Koh Samui for a stay at the luxury 5-star Santiburi Resort.
Set amidst acres of tropical gardens an Mae Nam Beach, Santiburi offers a whole host of family-friendly activities including a Soccer Camp, sea-fishing for children, tennis lessons, candle-making, darts, weekly golf sessions at the PGA Championship golf course, Pilates, and a games room with selection of computer and board games.
Price: from £7,495 for a family of four sharing (2 adults & 2 kids under 12) including return international and domestic flights with Thai Airways, 3 nights’ B&B in Bangkok, 7 nights’ B&B at the Santiburi Resort in an Equatorial 2-bedroom Duplex and return private transfers. Valid for travel 11 July-25 August 2011 when booked by 30 June 2011.
BALI – Bali is a fantastic place for families to visit, not just to hit the tropical beaches but to get outdoors and enjoy the countryside too – the valleys, emerald rice paddies, craft villages – and, above all, the gentlest people.
What’s more, Bali is at its very best in the summer months, with July and August the driest. Bridge & Wickers recommends families combine the delightful inland town of Ubud with a relaxing beach break. After a stop over in Singapore, families head for some relaxation time on the beach at Nusa Dua, on Bali’s southern-most tip, staying at the 5-star Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa. Next stop is the emerald hills and valleys of Ubud, the cultural and artistic heart of Bali, where families stay just outside the hustle and bustle at Waka di Ume, an oasis of calm, with just 18 individual dwellings scattered down the gentle hillside and flanked by rice fields. Enjoy the spa, or yoga and cooking classes, or visit the surrounding villages to discover an array of crafts, with each village specialising in a particular craft.
Price: from £5,495 (saving £300) for a family of four (2 adults & 2 kids under 12yrs) including return flights with Singapore Airlines, 2 nights’ B&B in Singapore at Swissotel The Stamford, 3 nights’ B&B on the beach at the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa in a Family Room and 5 nights’ B&B’ in Ubud at Waka di Ume in a Family Pool Villa. Heidelberg Castle Festival
June 26, 2011 on 1:21 pm | In Festivals, Germany | Comments OffHeidelberg, May: Every year, the Heidelberg Castle Festival represents the climax of the summer season and is the crowning conclusion of the Heidelberg Theatre and Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance season. A more beautiful setting for open-air theatrical and musical performances can hardly be imagined.
Artistic Director Peter Spuhler and his creative team, including Germany’s youngest Principal Conductor Cornelius Meister, are looking forward to their sixth Castle Festival this summer, in which they plan to continue the long and illustrious tradition of performances at Heidelberg Castle.
Open-air performances of the highest quality mirror the lightness of the summer season and make the most of the unique atmosphere of Heidelberg’s magical castle. The growing number of visitors coming every year from near and far attests to the continuing success of a time-honored tradition!
At the heart of the Heidelberg Castle Festival lies Sigmund Romberg`s operetta ‘The Student Prince’. It is as much a part of Heidelberg as the old university and the castle ruins. The melodies of ‘Heidelberg fair’, ‘Deep in my heart` and the zippy ‘Come Boys’ are true staples of the Heidelberg community.
They all revive in the glamorous production of Heinz Kreidl. And its original setting in the Heidelberg Castle Courtyard, where ‘Golden Days’ of Heidelberg return in front of the atmospheric scenery of the Ottheinrich-Building.

A local, family-run company, Heritage Cycle Tours offers itineraries perfect both for visitors to the region and for locals interested in discovering more of the area.
The tours are suitable for all abilities, with options including the classic Heritage four-day tour (which runs from Tuesday to Friday every week) and individual single-day tours. The tours are based in the countryside surrounding Salisburyand Marlborough, and cover an average distance of 25 miles each day.
“We’ve set up Heritage Cycle Tours because we love cycling in this beautiful area and want to be able to share that passion with as many people as possible,” explained Dave Evans, a trained cycle mechanic who runs the company with his wife, Lynda.
“We’ve carefully devised quiet routes that take in the best of the local area, so whether people are interested in historic sites like Stonehengeor Old Sarum, charming villages or simply want to experience beautiful countryside at your own pace, Heritage Cycle Tours offer the ideal rural holiday experience.”

“We want to make sure our guests have a fantastic experience, which means a lot of great cycling, but also means having the opportunity to relax and explore places like Salisbury, Marlborough and Avebury,” said Lynda Evans.
“We’ve designed the routes to make sure there’s no need to rush. People will have time to see everything they’re interested in – from the historical sites on the rides to the city centre shops. And we’ve chosen hotels where we know people will get great service and a great night’s sleep.”
Prices for the tours start at £590 for the four-day tour (including hotel accommodation, breakfast and dinner) and £45 for the single-day tours. Both groups and individuals are welcome, and Dave and Lynda are happy to accommodate requests for personalised tours when practical.

New Leisure And Spa Complex At Lincs Holiday Park
June 26, 2011 on 1:16 pm | In Cabinweb, London, Spa Resorts, United Kingdom | Comments OffAway Resorts is putting its faith in the UK holiday market with a £1.2 million investment in a new swimming pool complex with spa facilities, lakeside hot-tubs and a leisure suite at its Lincolnshire-based holiday park Tattershall Lakes Country Park which officially opens in time for the half-term holidays.
This comes on top of £500k already spent on improving this particular park, which is one of three that the company operates in the UK.
Tattershall Lakes’ new complex boasts a swimming pool with stunning views over one of the lakes, a spa, lake-view hot-tubs and a gym. It is a welcome addition to this popular lake-sided holiday park for all the family, and particularly provides some great pampering options for mum.
Carl Castledine, managing director of Away Resorts, says the £1.2 million investment in Tattershall Lakes Country Park is a symbol of the operator’s commitment to encouraging Britons to make the most of the UK.
“While the recession has forced many holiday companies to cut back on how much they spend on improving their parks, Away Resorts is putting its faith in the great British holiday and investing money into all areas of the park at Tattershall Lakes, from accommodation such as its Canvas Village ‘glamping’ option, to leisure facilities and entertainment for the whole family.
Away Resorts is keen to make sure the pool caters for all its guests, who typically come from within a two hour drive of Lincoln. So while solo swimmers will be able to enjoy daily relaxing swims in the heated, indoor pool, families will also be able to have some fun with a number of water-based toys. These include: aquajets, perfect for the little ones, these propeller aquajets allow them to whiz around underwater James Bond style; pool snorkelling; and water walkerz.
The spa will have a treatment room and three relaxation rooms and will offer a wide range of treatments, from pedicures and manicures, to massages and holistic treatments, such as Indian head massages, Hopi ear candles and reflexology.
There is a decked area just outside the pool that allows guests to take in views of the lakes from the hot tubs. The new leisure suite will also include a compact gym, offering machines for a full workout.
Away Resorts is also launching a new type of caravan, specifically designed for the Tattershall Lakes park, offering an affordable holiday home. Due to a clever use of design, the new Saint David Special Edition is more compact than its predecessor, the Saint David, but still has room to sleep six – and at £19,499 is 40% cheaper. At the higher end of the market, visitors will be able to have a look at the park’s luxury lodges, which are also available to buy.
New Spa Treatments Just For Men At Resort On Lake Garda
June 26, 2011 on 1:14 pm | In Italy, Spa Resorts | Comments OffLefay Resort & Spa on Lake Garda has just launched a new wellness programme designed especially for men. The programme includes five treatments designed to reinvigorate and relax.
The new wellness programme includes ‘La Brezza Accanto al Confine’ – an energetic sports massage that exerts specific pressure on different muscular areas, including the legs, arms and trunk. The massage aims to relax hypertonic muscles and increase the tone of those muscles that are too relaxed. The massage is followed by a detoxifying Lefay Spa aromatic mud pack in a cocoon. The Cocoon is the latest in spa technology, combining a steam sauna, infra red lights and a ‘Vischy shower’ which tones, reduces stress, assists with weight loss and reduces cellulite.
Spa rituals for hands and feet are also included in the programme. The hand ritual combines the action of a delicate exfoliation using alum stone, a moisturising sesame mask and a nourishing cream containing argan oil applied with a light relaxing massage. The ritual for feet involves a purifying bath with black soap to cleanse and soften the feet, followed by exfoliation and a nourishing massage.
All treatments have been created by the Lefay Spa Scientific Committee and as such are unique and innovative.
Each programme may be complemented by a detoxifying reduced-calorie menu, which offers food that is low in calories but has all the goodness and natural flavours of the Mediterranean cuisine.
A three night stay at Lefay Resort & Spa on a half board basis costs from £1,160 (1,290 euros) based on two sharing. The male wellness programme costs £332 (370 euros) for the five treatments.
