Stena Line Ferry With Wind Power

June 30, 2011 on 2:28 pm | In Cruise Boats, Europe | Comments Off

Stena Line, a Swedish ferry operator, said it is equipping a new ferry, the Stena Jutlandica, with two wind turbines at the prow, which will supply energy and reduce fuel consumption.

“Within our energy saving program, we are currently pursuing 200 environment improvement projects and this is yet another very interesting project,” said Robert Akerlund, director-technical at Stena Line.

The two turbines will be mounted on four-meter-high masts on the prow of the ship. The two turbines will produce current for the ship’s electricity grid. Since they are to be placed on the prow, they will also contribute to a reduction in the air resistance, the company said.

“The two turbines will generate about 23,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the domestic electricity consumption for four normal homes during one year. Among other things, the electricity will be used to power the lighting on the Jutlandica’s car deck,” Akerlund said.

The reduced air resistance at sea will result in a reduction in fuel consumption of between 80 and 90 ton per year. “This can be compared to the consumption of oil for heating 28 homes during one year,” Akerlund said.

Stena Line’ operations in Scandinavia are already environmentally certified according to ISO 14001. There are electricity connections for all ships in Gothenburg and, during recent years, a number of environmental improvement measures have been implemented that have resulted in either reduced energy consumption or lower fuel consumption.

Abercrombie & Kent Packages to Celebrate Life Milestones

June 30, 2011 on 2:27 pm | In Adventure Travel | Comments Off

Abercrombie & Kent is promoting its Extreme Adventures packages as a way to celebrate life’s milestones, by scaling some of the world’s highest peaks from Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to Mt. Kinabalu in Borneo and Everest Base Camp in Nepal. All treks are non-technical, making them accessible to a broad range of fit travelers, not just experienced mountain climbers.

“We just had a guest celebrate his 73rd birthday climbing to Everest Base Camp … and he took the lead the entire time,” said Scott Wiseman, president, Abercrombie & Kent USA. “Our clients are experience seekers who consider travel an essential part of their lifestyle. Therefore it’s only natural that so many choose to honor a significant birthday with a meaningful travel experience — especially one that includes a sense of accomplishment like summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro or Mt. Olympus.”

Abercrombie & Kent’s recommendations to commemorate a milestone birthday include Borneo: The Peak of Malaysia, which travels from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and climbing Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in southeast Asia at 13,431 feet (seven days from $4,290); Greece: Ascent to the Home of the Gods, including the high peaks of Mount Olympus (10 days from $4,245); Nepal: Ascent to Everest Base Camp (19 days from $5,890); and Mount Kilimanjaro: The Lemosho Route to the Summit, including Uhuru Peak, 19,325 feet above sea level (10 days from $6,920).

Abercrombie & Kent is a luxury travel company that began as a safari outfitter in Kenya in 1962. The company now has a network of more than 60 local destination management offices around the world.
