Austin-Lehman Chile, Argentina and Patagonia Adventure
August 31, 2011 on 2:31 pm | In Adventure Travel, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, South America | Comments Off
Active travel specialist Austin-Lehman Adventures is offering three new itineraries for 2012 for exploring both sides of the Andes in Argentina, Chile and Patagonia.
Argentina and Chile-Wine Country is a nine-day multi-sport (trekking, horseback riding, cycling) program priced at $5,098 per person double, beginning in Mendoza and ending in Santiago.
The 2012 tour dates are Feb. 13-21, March 5-13 and Dec.24-Jan. 1, 2013.
The itinerary encompasses the Uco Valley of Argentina and Mendoza´s wine regions (Malbecs and Torrontés) in a dry desert at the foothills of the Andes as well as Chile’s vines (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Carmenere) that grow in the Colchagua Valley, a lusher colonial-flavored landscape near the Pacific.
The scenic drive across the Andes takes guests along the base of Mt. Aconcagua (22,841-foot elevation), the highest peak of the Americas and anywhere outside of the Himalayas.
Dan Austin, ALA’s founder and owner, said the trips are enhanced by “engaging guests on bike, horseback and on foot in the living cultural experiences available in these two extraordinary countries. Our choices for lodging are boutique hotels at the vineyards, haciendas and estancias (authentic working cattle ranches) that become true highlights of the trip.”
Also new for 2012 is Argentina and Chile-Patagonia, a 10-day, moderately paced mountaineering adventure with hiking trips and horseback tours priced at $5,498 per person double, that begins and ends in El Calafate (South Patagonia) for transfers to Buenos Aires and covers much of the territory of Bruce Chatwin’s In Patagonia.
The 2011-2012 tour dates are Dec. 19-28, Feb. 20-29, March 12-21 and Dec. 31-Jan. 9.
Highlights include (in Argentina) trekking to the best views of the Southern Face of Cerro Torre, its lake and hanging glaciers, and the Egger and Standhard spires plus views of the Fitz Roy massif, Mt. Saint Exupery, and Poincenot peaks. There’s also a glaciologist-led ice hike over the Perito Moreno Glacier to observe its surreal formations of ice peaks and blue crevasses.
A third new tour is Argentina and Chile-Salta to Atacama, a 10-day cycling, horseback and hiking adventure priced at $5,298 per person double, that begins in the northwest Argentine city of Salta and ends at the Atacama town of Calama with air transfers to Santiago, Chile.
The 2012 departures are offered year-round.
Highlights include cycling Los Cardones National Park, wine tasting at local bodegas, museum visits, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Humahuaca Canyon and three full days exploring Chile’s Atacama, the driest desert in the world.

International Expeditions Drops Single Supplement on Select 2012 Tours
August 31, 2011 on 2:28 pm | In Adventure Travel, Brazil, Cruise Boats, South America | Comments Off
International Expeditions waived its single supplement on some 2012 Amazon and Galapagos Adventures, amounting to a savings of up to $1,749 for the 25 percent of Americans who travel solo, according to a 2009 survey by D.K. Shifflet & Associates.
The single supplement fees will be waived on 11 expedition cruises, including the April 6, 20 and 27 and Aug, 3, 10, 17 and. 24, 2012, Amazon River expedition cruise departures — a $1,749 per person savings. Single travelers will also enjoy no additional single supplement — a $1,200 per person savings — on IE’s May 11 and 25 and Oct 12 and 26, 2012, Galapagos Island cruises.
“Over the past five years we have seen larger numbers of single travelers looking for safe, escorted travel to the world’s wildlife-rich regions, “ said IE President Maggie Hart. “IE has made every effort to make our journeys open and inclusive for all travelers, and that includes keeping single supplements as low as possible and waiving the fees throughout the year — not just at the last minute.”
Aboard IE’s journey into the headwaters of the Amazon River, guests travel more than 600 miles aboard a classically styled riverboat, enjoying chances of rare wildlife sightings. Daily outings on this small-ship adventure take travelers deep into the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve to spot diverse wildlife, hike into the rainforest, and even fish for piranha.
During excursions into the narrow river tributaries, guests may spot more than 100 kinds of birds, pink and gray river dolphins, sloths, giant otters and nocturnal animals such as caimans and capybaras.
Amazon cruise passengers also spend time with ribereños in remote river villages, handing out school supplies to children and meeting with a local shaman.
Ensuring a high level of authenticity, IE varies the villages guests visit during their expedition. 2012 rates for the 10-day Amazon journey start at $3,798 and include accommodations, complimentary on-board laundry, all excursions, most meals, transfers and tips to porters and waiters for included meals.
On the 10-day Galapagos Islands cruise, International Expeditions’ 32-guest yacht M/V Evolution navigates to islands where the small group size allows for easy access to the wildlife and far more personal attention than guests find aboard large cruise ships.
Aboard the M/V Evolution, guests sail in comfort with spacious accommodations, fine cuisine and a host of amenities including an observation deck (perfect for whale watching) and canopied bar, plus complimentary snorkeling equipment, wetsuits and kayaks.
In addition to daily snorkeling and hiking, other highlights include a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Center, famous for its tortoise breeding programs; an exploration of Santiago Island, a haven for finches, doves and Galapagos hawks; and a sailing to Kicker Rock.
Trained Galapagos naturalist guides share their knowledge and bring clients within inches of giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, penguins and other animals. Prices for the Galapagos Islands vacations start at $5,098 in 2012, and include accommodations, all excursions, most meals, transfers and tips to porters and waiters for included meals. International Expeditions specializes in small-group journeys to remote destinations.

Tauck, Ken Burns Launch Winter Journeys in Yellowstone Park
August 31, 2011 on 2:22 pm | In Adventure Travel, Cabinweb, Rockies, Skiing Snowboarding | Comments OffTauck is partnering with filmmaker Ken Burns and his collaborator Dayton Duncan to launch two new winter programs that explore Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area. One of the new itineraries is a one-time, eight-day event with the opportunity to personally meet Burns and Duncan. The other is a nine-day Tauck Culturious journey with multiple departures beginning in January 2012.Both will offer special access to the park and to naturalists and other park experts who will share their insights, and to experiences that travelers can’t typically enjoy on their own.Burns and Duncan were the creators of the PBS documentary, “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.”
The new Yellowstone trips are the latest product of the “Ken Burns American Journeys” partnership announced last year by Burns, Duncan and Tauck, which crafts travel experiences based on the themes and topics explored in Burns’s films.
“When Dayton and I signed on to work with Tauck, our very first idea was creating an exploration of Yellowstone in winter. The park receives 3.5 million people each year, but less than 3 percent of those visitors experience Yellowstone at its very best, during the winter months,” said Burns. “In winter, the normal crowds are gone, the park has a special majesty and serenity, and the opportunities to see wildlife are incredible.”
Wildlife viewing at Yellowstone is enhanced in winter because ground cover is thinner and animals stand out more clearly against a white background of snow.
Heat from the park’s geothermal features can also reduce snow accumulations in specific areas, attracting grazing animals that dig through the shallow snow to reach underlying grasses.
Those grazing animals in turn often attract wolves and other predators that help make a winter experience in Yellowstone so memorable. “You’ve never really seen Yellowstone until you’ve been there in winter,” said Duncan. “It’s 10 times more spectacular.”
The eight-day Winter In Yellowstone event is limited to 210 attendees, split into two groups of 105, starting on Jan. 6 and 8. The two groups will come together to meet Burns and attend his keynote address at the Old Faithful Visitors Center on Jan. 11. Throughout the rest of the event, the groups will experience the various itinerary components in staggered schedules on different days.
The event (from $4,190 per person double, land only) features stays at the Chico Hot Springs Resort, Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Spring Creek Ranch. Activities include explorations aboard heated, motorized snowcoaches (specially equipped vehicles with treads and skis instead of wheels) and wildlife viewing in areas including the Lamar Valley, Norris and Lower Geyser Basins, Yellowstone Lake, Hayden Valley and Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Optional activities during free time include ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Tauck has assembled a team of experts who will offer special presentations on the history, culture and biology of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park. Attendees will meet Burns prior to his keynote address, and learn about the making of the Burns/Duncan film “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” from Duncan. Bob Landis, who contributed dramatic footage of wolves to the film (the film’s only footage not personally shot by Burns or his team) will share adventures from his four decades as a wildlife cinematographer.
Other speakers include Paul Schullery, a naturalist, historian and author of over 30 books who has lived in Yellowstone for nearly 40 years; ecology and mammalogy expert Jim Halfpenny; and National Park Service expert Gerard Baker. Included in the event price are airport transfers, accommodations, most meals, all sightseeing, lectures and other presentations, and a farewell cocktail reception and dinner at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.
Tauck is also offering six departures of a similar itinerary as part of its Culturious collection of immersive, small group trips for active boomer-age travelers.
The nine-day Wonderland: Yellowstone In Winter itinerary will operate in January, February and March with an average group size of 20 travelers per departure, and conclude with two nights at the Wort Hotel in Jackson, Wyo., rather than the event’s one-night stay at the Spring Creek Ranch. Priced from $3,490 per person double, land only, the Culturious itinerary will also feature a similar roster of experts and lecturers, although Burns and Duncan will not be present.
Ken Burns American Journeys is a partnership between Burns, Duncan and Tauck, an 86-year-old leader in premium quality guided land journeys and cruises. The partnership, which creates travel experiences exploring the themes of Burns’s films, is comprised of three parts: Ken Burns Events are one-time events featuring personal appearances by Burns. Besides the new Yellowstone winter event, other events have explored the Civil War in and around Washington, D.C., and the birth and evolution of jazz in New Orleans.
Crafted By Tauck & Ken Burns itineraries are in-depth journeys designed by Burns and Duncan with Tauck. These itineraries operate with multiple departure dates, and current offerings explore the national parks of the U.S. Southwest, the Civil War and its impacts in the mid-Atlantic region, and Yellowstone National Park in winter. (Crafted By Tauck & Ken Burns itineraries do not include personal appearances by Burns or Duncan.) Stories By Ken Burns are original, filmed narratives from five to 15 minutes long, that will be shown to guests during Ken Burns Events, on Crafted By Tauck & Ken Burns itineraries and on select Tauck journeys. Each features Burns and/or Duncan sharing their personal reflections on the places guests are visiting with Tauck, and the people and cultural issues that shaped the history of those places.

Brand g Vacations Targeting Gay Travelers
August 31, 2011 on 2:12 pm | In Cruise Boats | Comments Off
The Mark Travel Corporation introduced Brand g Vacations, which offers specialized group experiences to the gay community and pitches itself as “the next generation in gay travel.” Brand g was created under the direction of 25-year industry veteran Charlie Rounds, who has deep roots in gay group travel.
Although Brand g’s customer base will be mostly gay and lesbian, Rounds hopes to attract a larger share of the segment by welcoming friends and family of the LGBT community, also known as allies.
“Gay travel looks a lot different than it did 25 years ago,” said Rounds, former president of RSVP Vacations. “More gays and lesbians are out, getting married, and are interested in vacationing with friends and family. This is a great opportunity for travel agents to break into the LGBT travel market, because even if they don’t have gay customers, they probably have customers with gay family members or friends.”
Brand g will primarily offer escorted group tours to international destinations. Its inaugural trip in August 2012 is a full-ship charter of AMA Waterways’ newest 164-passenger riverboat, the AmaCerto, featuring two nights in Prague followed by a custom tailored, seven-day itinerary down the Danube River.
As a former travel agent, Rounds is a strong believer in the importance of the travel agent community in selling specialized products such as those offered by Brand g. “This is a more complicated and sophisticated product, and a great way for travel agents to show their value to customers.”
The Brand g website encourages consumers to contact their local travel agent to book its vacations. Rounds will also be hosting a webinar on VAX VacationAccess’s new Gay Travel Showcase, which was launched in July as a resource for travel agents interested in selling to the LGBT segment. His future goals for Brand g are to design innovative vacations that celebrate destinations that have led the way in improving the lives of gays and lesbians, and to incorporate a give-back element, where passengers can experience the beauty of destinations first-hand while also contributing to the improvement of the local communities. In addition to the riverboat cruise, the new brand will offer small group land programs in 2012 to Ireland and Mexico City, with plans to add a Wellness vacation in 2012.
