Agritourism Experiences Growing in Bradenton, Fla.
September 26, 2011 on 5:16 pm | In Beachbooker, Florida | Comments OffWineries, Citrus Farm, Pumpkin Obstacle Course and Festival Entertain Visitors
BRADENTON, Fla. – The soft, white sands of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key have obvious appeal for visitors, but the rich soil of Bradenton’s growing community of family-owned farms and vineyards – along with a construction site turned heavy equipment playground – have become fertile ground for new vacation experiences. Wine tastings, hay rides, citrus grove and vineyard tours, The Heavy Equipment Experience™ and “u-pick” farms are among several Bradenton area “agritourism” experiences visitors can now enjoy. Mixon Fruit Farms, Rosa Fiorelli Winery and other Bradenton farmers and growers recently formed Gulf Coast AgVentures to collectively market these experiences to visitors.
Florida’s sweetest attraction since 1939, Mixon Fruit Farms is open year round as an entertaining and informative way for visitors to learn about Florida’s citrus industry. Among the farm’s many attractions are the Orange Blossom Express tram tour of the citrus groves; an interactive wildlife show featuring rescued Florida animals, reptiles and birds; a koi pond and butterfly garden; and a tour of the working juice processing plant and packing house. Lunch, breakfast and their signature Orange Swirl Ice Cream are served at the Groveside Café, while at the Groveside Market visitors can taste Florida wines or homemade fudge, and order fresh fruit to be shipped home. The Mixon family welcomes everyone back for their annual special events, including the Orange Blossom and Harvest Festivals, and Concerts in the Grove held in the outdoor pavilion.
Two local couples, one from Sicily, the other Bradenton natives, operate the Bradenton area’s finest wineries, including Rosa Fiorelli Winery and Bunker Hill Vineyard & Winery. Both wineries are open daily and offer free vineyard tours and wine tastings, and Rosa Fiorelli welcomes u-pick of their muscadine grape varieties (through September). The Rosa Fiorelli Winery caters to visitors with group tours of their 10-acre vineyard and 3,000 square foot winery featuring lunch, a tasting and souvenir glass. Thanks to convenient online ordering, guests can easily try one of the new featured wines, such as the NV Aurora, boasting an essence of fresh peaches, or the 2007 Southern Red with floral aromas. Bunker Hill focuses on “green” operations, using only 100 percent recycled wine bottles, natural corks, and origami gift wrapping instead of bags. All 10 of their handcrafted wines are aged in their “wine cave”. They are a popular choice for destination weddings and special events, and beginning in 2012, will offer Fresh Whole Fruit wines.
The fall season is also harvest time for pumpkins, which one area attraction is carving up on a mammoth scale. People at Play: The Heavy Equipment Experience, the Southeast’s first Heavy Equipment Playground, has added pumpkins to its demolition experience with a fun new “Punkin Chunkin’ Package”. Visitors climb into the cab of a CATERPILLAR 312 Steel Track Excavator to navigate a fun and challenging obstacle course, after which they can smash a dozen large, orange pumpkins using the Excavator bucket. This one-of-a-kind experience costs $425 (plus tax) and is only available through November 13.
Known for its fresh vegetables, farm market and u-pick operations, Hunsader Farms opens in mid-September (through June) to sell their fresh produce and prepare for the annual Pumpkin Festival held October 15-16, 22-23, and 29-30, 2011. During the festival, visitors can pick fresh-from-the-farm Halloween pumpkins, enjoy live country music, shop more than 100 craft booths, hop on a hay ride or watch the corn and pumpkin cannons in action. The festival also caters to children, with a colossal corn maze; hay, train and pony rides; a petting zoo and barnyard playground.

Today’s cozy cafes and neighborhood coffee spots may easily be traced back to Vienna, Austria, where charming coffee houses have been part of the cityscape since the 1800s. Art lovers will be pleased to know that between now and the end of 2012, Vienna will celebrate the 150th birthday of Art Nouveau’s master painter Gustav Klimt (The Kiss) with a series of special events and exhibits. For a complete listing of events, see KLIMT 2012.

The MCB Tour Championship to be hosted at Constance Belle Mare Plage
September 26, 2011 on 5:14 pm | In Africa, Beachbooker, Mauritius | Comments OffConstance Belle Mare Plage on the island of Mauritius has gained further esteem in the world of golf by agreeing to host one of the leading events on the European Senior Tour calendar.
For the last two years, the Legend course at the Constance Belle Mare Plage has provided the venue for the MCB Open, one of the tournament on the Senior Tour’s annual calendar.
But, from December this year, the Senior Tour Championship, arguably the most prestigious tournament outside of the Majors, will visit the island following the signing of a new four-year agreement by sponsors the Mauritius Commercial Bank.
The new tournament will be called the MCB Tour Championship and, for the next four years, will provide the climax to the season instead of launching the campaign as was the case with the MCB Open
The MCB Tour Championship will bring together the top 54 players in the Senior Tour order-of-merit to compete for a share in a prize fund worth a minimum of €400,000. The winners of the season’s Majors and the previous year’s champion are also eligible to compete.
Following the tournament, the coveted John Jacobs Trophy will be presented to the player who finishes the season at the head of the order-of-merit.
This year’s MCB Tour Championship will be played over 54 holes, from December 9 to 11 and will be preceded, as in the past, by a series of amateur competitions and a pro-am event.
Coverage of the tournament will appear in national, international and local newspapers and magazines, through television and radio, and via the PGA European Tour website, while all the week’s activities – reports, scores and features – can be accessed through the dedicated MCB Tour Championship website, www.mcbtourchampionship.com
Raoul Gufflet, international head at the Mauritius Commercial Bank, is looking forward to the new tournament:
“Hosting the last event of the European Senior Tour season with such a strong field will guarantee spectacular golf,” he said.
“We are delighted that the MCB Tour Championship is set to become one of the top events on the European Senior Tour calendar.
“With this enhanced partnership, what was already the most prestigious golf competition in the Indian Ocean will be even better and will promote Mauritius as a true golf destination.”
Patrice Binet-Decamps, managing director of Constance Hotels Experience, said:
“Constance Hotels Experience has been present on the world golf map since 1992, with our three championship golf courses in Mauritius and the Seychelles, and we are happy to reinforce our association with the European Senior Tour.
“Following the success of the MCB Open, Constance Belle Mare Plage is delighted to host the European Senior Tour players for the MCB Tour Championship in December 2011.”

Berlin and Hamburg Present Holiday and Winter Highlights 2011
September 26, 2011 on 5:11 pm | In Germany, Webbandstand | Comments OffChristmas Markets, Holiday Specials, and an Abundance of Winter Activities make for A Memorable Northern German Holiday Experience.
Germany’s most northern Christmas capitals, Berlin and Hamburg, set themselves apart from their well-known southern German counterparts with their very individual modern flair and distinct urban personalities. A scenic 90-minute, high-speed train ride apart, visitors can experience a very traditional German Holiday spirit complemented by high culture and urban edge in Berlin, and cool style and maritime elegance in Hamburg.
Holiday Highlights in Hamburg and Berlin include:
Christmas Markets: From Romantic to Off Beat
Starting as early as November 21, Christmas markets are poised to get you in the holiday spirit. Hot mulled “Glühwein”, traditional gingerbread, and cold weather comfort snacks are a must, and corralling and holiday concerts contribute further to the festive mood.
Hamburg’s 15 Christmas markets range from the nostalgic Historical Market at Rathausmarkt square with its old-time alleys, to the Wintermagic at Jungfernstieg, which is on the city’s canals and known for its old-fashioned ferries wheel and famous hanseatic maritime flair. Germany’s only “adults only” Santa Pauli market offers a naughty alternative to the traditional format: located in Hamburg’s famed red-light district Sankt Pauli, the focus is on cocktails, cabaret, and live music. The city’s newest market is at Überseequartier at HarborCity, a former dock area-turned urban hot spot.
At year’s end, Berlin’s 60 holiday markets invite visitors to slow down and enjoy the Season. The most romantic Christmas market is the old-world Weihnachtszauber at Gendarmenmarkt Square in the Eastern part of the city. In the West, the market at Charlottenburg Palace is known for its stunning backdrop and high-end arts and crafts. The Lucia Christmas Market at the Kulturbrauerei, a former brewery-turned cultural hot-spot, features Swedish traditions, atmospheric light displays, and occasional bonfires.
Winter sports, the Outdoors and Family Fun
An illuminated wintery steamboat cruise on Hamburg’s inner city Alster lake has long been a favorite activity for families. However, in recent winters, unusually low temperatures covered the 400 acre body of water with a solid ice layer, turning the lake into a popular outdoor wonderland for skating, ice sports, or walking. On weekends booths set up on the ice and serve hot beverages and hearty snacks.
Irrespective of temperatures, Europe’s largest artificial outdoor ice rink at Hamburg’s Indoo Arena at Planten und Blomen park offers winter-long skating.
In lieu of real mountains, Berlin’s Winterwelt (Winter World) at Potsdamer Platz features a 40-feet high and 230-feet long mobile toboggan run, a free outdoor ice rink and curling lanes, complemented by a rustic “ski hut”, where waiters in traditional garb serve Austrian specialties.
Romantics can enjoy the holiday lights and decorations at Berlin’s historic center from a horse-drawn carriage. Tours start in front of the Opern Palais.
Christmas Trees and Holiday Lights
For more than 40 years, the Alstertanne has been Hamburg’s best known Christmas tree. Mounted on a pontoon in the middle of the Alster lake, this tall and festively lit pine tree is in clear view from the upscale Jungfernstieg shopping area, which is also decked out in festive Advent dress during the Holiday season.
A tall Christmas tree on Pariser Platz at the iconic Brandenburg Gate makes for a perfect photo opportunity. Traditionally, the tree is donated by a small community in Norway and decorated with stars, angels, red apples and more than 800 lights. From here, illuminated Linden trees beckon visitors to stroll down Unter den Linden Boulevard.
Culture and Holiday Shows
In Hamburg and Berlin, opera and music are part of the Holiday magic.
The 2011 winter program at the Hamburg State Opera includes performances of Humperdinck’s “Hänsel and Gretel”, the “Nutcracker”, as well as the Hamburg Ballet’s traditional performance of the “Christmas Oratory”.
http://www.hamburgische-staatsoper.de/de/2_spielplan/index.php?s=1322694000&t=Kalender
Berlin’s three opera houses and seven symphony orchestras will be staging holiday specials, such as a Family Christmas Concert and organ performance at the Berlin Philharmonics, http://www.berliner-philharmoniker.de/en/concerts/kalender/view/browser/datum/2011-12/ as well as “Cinderella” and Verdi’s “La Traviata” performed at the Schiller Theater by the Staatsoper Ensemble. http://www.staatsoper-berlin.org/de_DE/calendar/01.12.2011-31.12.2011
Holiday Specials and Hotel Packages

Intermingling history of the west, the fall crush in Washington wine country, spectacular autumn scenery and exhilarating river explorations, American Safari Cruises offers six departures along the Columbia and Snake Rivers in October and November 2011.
The weeklong Rivers of the West itinerary sails one-way between Portland, Oregon and Lewiston, Idaho (and reverse) aboard the exclusive 12-guest Safari Spirit.
Available for individual travel or charter, departure dates include October 8; November 12, 19 and 26; and special Culinary and Wine Discovery theme cruises on October 29 and November 5.
“Our small group travel philosophy shines on this itinerary along the rivers,” said Tim Jacox, executive vice president of sales and marketing. “Guests will enjoy private tours and wine tastings along with expert interpretation of the area’s history by our on board naturalist.”
The itinerary transits eight locks, three states and cuts through the dramatic Columbia River Gorge on its route between Portland, Oregon and Lewiston, Idaho.
In Oregon, guests will explore the Multnomah Falls, Bonneville Dam and dock for the evening in the picturesque town of Hood River—the wind surfing capital of the world.
A guest speaker joins guests after dinner in Hood River to discuss the area’s history.
Cruising the Columbia, the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region, offers a close-up look at the workings of the rivers’ locks and dams.
On the Washington side, highlights include private tours to two local wineries for wine tastings, a guest speaker in Richland knowledgeable about the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, cruising through a wildlife region rich with migratory birds, entering the Snake River and kayaking or skiff explorations up the Palouse River.
An exhilarating jet boat ride into Hells Canyon in Idaho takes guests into North America’s deepest canyon for incredible scenery and opportunities to view 7,000-year-old petroglyphs and bighorn sheep.
On board the Safari Spirit, elegant décor and a casual atmosphere combine into a welcome sense of luxury.
The inclusive cruises include all from-the-yacht activities and equipment; transfers; exquisite meals; fine wine, premium spirits and microbrews; and all port charges, taxes and fees.
The Safari Spirit features a hot tub, sauna, library, open bridge, Tempur-pedic mattresses, Jacuzzi tub and shower and heated tile floors in all bathrooms, and upper category balconies.
An all-American crew has a guest-crew ratio of 2 to 1. Yachts can be booked as a private charter or by individual stateroom.
