Bolshoi Theatre To Reopen After Six Years

September 24, 2011 on 5:19 pm | In Festivals, Performing Arts, Russia, Webbandstand | Comments Off

After six years of reconstruction costing £413 million, the Bolshoi theatre will finally reopen with a grandiose gala concert on October 28, 2011.

A few days after the ceremony a first season premiere “Ruslan and Lyudmila” by Glinka will be presented on the Bolshoi Theatre Main Stage.

Throughout the season 2011/2012 world premieres will be performed on the renovated Main Stage along with renewed masterpieces of Russian ballet and opera.

The Bolshoi is of course steeped in ballet history and known for hosting some of the greatest dancers ever seen. The neo-classical building closed for renovation in 2005 and the project has since been beset by delays with engineers discovering that 75 per cent of the building was unstable. It is now set to welcome future generations of ballet stars in a spectacular setting.

Audley offer a four day trip to Moscow including a ticket to the Bolshoi, flights, private transfers and a privately guided tour of the Kremlin from £1150 per person. Further details from Audley on 01993 838 200 www.audleytravel.com

Face The Music With 40% Accommodation Discount

September 24, 2011 on 5:13 pm | In Festivals, London, United Kingdom, Webbandstand | Comments Off

Two of Northumberland’s finest hotels, Eshott Hall and Doxford Hall, are offering music lovers the chance to face the music and enjoy 40% off their accommodation rates. During the inaugural Northumberland Music Festival [ www.nmfestival.com], taking place at the hotels between 28th October to the 6th November, Bed and a Northumberland Breakfast is priced at only £60 per person. The festival programme includes over fifteen concerts incorporating Opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, Classical and Traditional music.

Mr Robert Parker, who owns the Halls, has a passion for both music and Northumberland, and the Festival is his way of bringing both together.

Both of these hotels are magnificent Georgian mansions, independently owned and operated and both have AA Rosette Restaurants. The four star Doxford Hall Hotel [www.doxfordhall.com] located near Alnwick in Northumberland, has thirty guest bedrooms, a restaurant, extensive spa and leisure facilities and is set in over ten acres of gardens. With eleven bedrooms, Eshott Hall [www.eshotthall.co.uk] near Morpeth is a luxury boutique property and Pride of Britain Hotel.

Highlights of the Northumberland Music Festival include Opera concerts presented by Robin Newton, Head of Music at the renowned Garsington Opera, a piano concert by international pianist Murray McLachlan and his star pupils from Chetham’s school in Manchester, Strings from the Kingsmead String Quartet, Brass from the Durham Miners’ Association Brass Band and the Polyphonic Brass Quintet and Traditional from Northumbrian Pipes and Fiddle and the Northumberland Ranters.

The Offer, which is for two people sharing a twin or double room, includes a hearty Northumbrian Breakfast. It is subject to availability and must be booked in advance.

The Highlight Gala Opera Concert opens the Festival and features some of the country’s top opera singers. This includes soprano Samantha Crawford, who regularly performs on BBC Radio 3 and has appeared on BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, the Children in Need Concert and Songs of Praise. The Gilbert and Sullivan programme, which finishes the festival, features ex stars from the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, including mezzo soprano Pauline Birchall and tenor Stephen Brown. The musicians in the classical concerts in between have never played in Northumberland, so this represents a unique opportunity to experience and enjoy their repertoire. The Northumbrian players, on the other hand, come with a solid local following. All are looking forward to the chance to play in the unique settings of the Halls and their ballrooms.

Bats, Spiders And Witches In Store For Halloween At Holkham Hall

September 24, 2011 on 5:12 pm | In Festivals, London, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Four days full of fun and frights will set pulses racing at Holkham Hall in Norfolk when a full programme of events and activities from October 27 – 30 is planned to celebrate Halloween.

Every day spooky activities abound with wicked witches and gigantic spiders to be found in the Bygones Museum, where younger visitors are in for a trick or treat as they seek them out amidst the huge cobwebs.

In the evenings it won’t be just the heating pipes making strange noises below stairs in the hall, as a renowned Victorian ghost hunter leads the hunt for all things ghoulish and unlocks the secrets hidden in the labyrinth of cellars beneath the grand Palladian mansion.

This year it is also the United Nations Year of the Bat and, in keeping with the season, the hall is hosting a ‘Go Batty’ family activity day on Thursday, October 27. This free event is open to everyone and takes place from 11am to 4pm offering an opportunity to explore the habitats and lifecycle of these creatures who have had long been associated with witchcraft, black magic and darkness.

An evening ‘dusk bat walk’ will follow in Holkham Park from 5pm – 6.30pm, with bat detectors in operation to help find the creatures before they hibernate for the winter. There will be a small charge for all those wanting to join the walk of £3 for adults and £1.50 for children

Further details on admission prices and times of events can be found by visiting www.holkham.co.uk,  or telephoning 01328 713111.

Single Travel On The Rise For Christmas And New Year 2011

September 24, 2011 on 5:09 pm | In London, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Singles travel continues to increase and there is a new trend for single travellers to break away during Christmas and New Year according to Just You, one of the UK’s leading tour operators for single travellers.

Overall single travel for the company was up by a third in 2010 and is up by around ten per cent in 2011 to date. A quarter of Just You’s travellers are actually married, but people choosing to travel at different times to their partners. However the rise in single travel also reflects both increasing divorce rates and a decline in marriage rates – official statistics show these are now as low as 40 per cent.*

Andrew Dufty, marketing director for Just You, said: ‘We’re finding that single travellers are now increasingly exploiting their lack of ties by booking breaks away before, or during Christmas and New Year. They are abandoning the laborious preparations of Christmas shopping by making a break of it and then many are also avoiding the possible chores of Christmas itself – cooking dinner and having to charm uninvited and often unwanted relatives. We’re finding customers who simply want to escape and let someone else do all that work in more interesting surroundings. Plus as we never include a single supplement, our customers know that they can look forward to a fantastic break at a great price.’

Just You’s top 10 pre-Christmas and Christmas and New Year breaks include:

- Warwick and Warwick Castle, three days from £299

- Cheltenham, four days from £429

- Wiltshire, four days from £419

- Andalucía, six days from £785

The Olarro Luxury Lodge partnered with Extraordinary Journeys Africa on a six-night trip to Kenya that combines a safari with a community exchange program with the Maasai people. The $7,200 itinerary is offered for $6,000 per person double and includes a significant donation to building a much-needed new classroom for the local community.

The price includes six nights accommodation, all meals, flights within Kenya, guided game walks and game drives, donation to community projects, and all transfers (10 percent commission on each booking). Also included is $500 toward the community project, which is building a new classroom at Esoit Academy in Kenya. “The first two nights will be spent at the luxury Olarro Lodge, in the Loita Hills, Oct. 10 and 11,” said Elizabeth Gordon from Extraordinary Journeys. “In partnership with Under the Acacia, guests will spend time with the community of Maasai and meet with chiefs, elders and students. The rest of the safari will be spent exploring the Masai Mara where guests can experience daily game drives to see the great migration of the wildebeest or track the Big Five. Guests will also be able to arrange for hot air balloon rides, bush dinners or visiting another Under the Acacia school project (an hour and a half drive away).
