Emirates ice system wins Skytrax Award for the seventh year

Dubai, UAE – For the seventh year in a row, Emirates Airline’s ‘ice’ inflight entertainment system has been awarded the ‘World’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment’ award at the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards. The awards are based on voting by over 18.8 million airline passengers from 100 different nationalities

Inflight Entertainment (IFE) has become a key competitive benchmark for airlines worldwide. Emirates has maintained its industry-leading position by continuously investing in and expanding its entertainment offering; resulting in an incredible range of movies, television and music from around the world.

Emirates latest IFE system, ice Digital Widescreen (‘ice’ stands for information, communications and entertainment), offers a staggering choice of over 1200 channels of entertainment, including over 280 movies from around the world, hundreds of TV choices and thousands of music tracks from contemporary to classical.

As well as investing in the latest entertainment content and newest systems, Emirates has recently finished upgrading the hardware on its existing A330-200 and A340-300 fleets to a new digital IFE system; bringing ice to every seat in Emirates First Class and Emirates Business Class – a considerable investment in equipment at time when many airlines are easing back on significant product improvements. Furthermore, Emirates now has over 90 aircraft equipped with AeroMobile, which allows mobile phone use inflight, and will soon roll out A380 aircraft equipped with WiFi internet connection.

“As a global airline serving 113 destinations on five continents, our passengers are as diverse and unique as our routes. Emirates strives to make our service the most comfortable and entertaining in the world. This year’s Skytrax ‘World’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment’ award once again underlines our relentless commitment to providing the best inflight entertainment in the air – offering more content, in more languages and ultimately more choice, than ever before,” said Patrick Brannelly, Emirates’ Vice President Corporate Communications Product. “We are proud to have our efforts recognised once again and we can assure our passengers that we won’t be resting on our laurels at all; we’ll be working harder than ever to make sure that our passengers continue to have the best entertainment experience in the air.”

“Emirates seems to have a very firm grip on this title, having been named the winner of world’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment Award for many successive years,” said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. “With the increased level of competition amongst airlines to deliver the best standards of inflight entertainment, it is an even greater achievement for Emirates that they can stay at the No 1 spot again in 2011.”

A great example of what passengers can experience from inflight entertainment on Emirates is the incredible August line-up; featuring 50 newly-acquired movies from Hollywood, Bollywood and beyond. Emirates will be the first airline showing of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which complements an extensive film library available on ice. Families travelling with children will be spoilt for choice in August as ice will offer over 25 kids movies; including up to 18 Disney Classics and 10 new release movies for younger viewers. Children can also enjoy up to 30 hours of TV programmes ranging from pre-school favourites, the Wiggles, to BBC Cbeebies sensation Rastamouse and Cartoon Network hits.

Emirates Services to Baghdad

October 30, 2011 on 12:17 pm | In Dubai, Iraq, Middle East | Comments Off

First flight scheduled for 13th November 2011

DUBAI, U.A.E. –– Emirates will commence passenger flights to Baghdad from the 13th November 2011, marking the airlines’ second destination in Iraq.

Operating four times per week Baghdad will be Emirates’ fifth international destination to launch in 2011 with Basra and Geneva already operational and Copenhagen and St Petersburg to follow on 1st August and 1st November respectively.

“Baghdad is a strategically important destination for Emirates,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group. “Its geographical location, coupled with the fact that few international carriers operate there, makes it the perfect destination for us to tap into and drive revenue from. With more than five million residents in Baghdad, and its surrounding districts, this new service will provide them with direct access to our vast global network.”

“Our launch into Basra, Iraq in February this year has been a resounding success with flights operating in both directions at capacity. In the four months since we began operations to Iraq thousands of passengers have flown with Emirates between Basra and Dubai seeing the route perform well above expectations.”

With 14 new passenger aircraft still to be delivered in 2011, Emirates continues to grow its network, identifying new markets with strong revenue and existing demand. The airline’s strength in recognising potential in new destination continues to hold it in good stead, following its record financial results released recently.

EK941 will depart Dubai at 07:55am touching down at Baghdad International Airport at 09:40am the same day. At 11:35am, return flight EK942 will depart Baghdad arriving in Dubai at 14:55pm the same day. The service will operate on a Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The service will be operated by an Airbus 330 in a three class configuration.

Emirates expects the passenger mix travelling in and out of Iraq to come from a variety of sources, with a significant skew towards industry and Government personnel. The construction, telecommunications and oil sectors are expected to make up three of the largest industry segments.

Iraqi nationals, both in Baghdad and residing outside of Iraq are also expected to be strong users of this new service. The new service out of Baghdad will provide travellers in the capital with good onward connections to many of Emirates’ global destinations including the GCC, Levant, India, China and the UK via Dubai.

Emirates currently operates a four weekly service to Basra in Iraq and has offices located in both Basra and Baghdad.

Emirates to Serve St Petersburg

October 30, 2011 on 12:16 pm | In Airlines, Dubai, Middle East, Russia | Comments Off

Emirates is to launch flights deeper into Russia by starting services to St Petersburg, which will become the most northerly point on the airline’s network.

The port city, lying on the Baltic coast and sometimes referred to as Russia’s ‘Northern Capital,’ will be served from 1st November with a daily flight from Dubai.

A combination of Airbus A340-300 and A330-200 will be deployed on the route, offering First, Business and Economy Class travel. EK flight 137 will depart Dubai at 1035hrs, arriving in St Petersburg at 1615hrs. The return flight leaves St Petersburg at 1745 and lands in Dubai at 0035hrs the next day.

The airline currently operates a double daily flight to Moscow and has been flying to the Russian capital since 2003.

“We see great potential in Russia and the success of our Moscow flights has demonstrated that there is still demand from this market,” commented His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group.

“We have been considering launching a non-stop service to St Petersburg for some time and we believe that the conditions are now right to do so. This is a city which attracts many tourists and cruise visitors every year because of its grand architecture, arts and culture and fascinating history,” added Sheikh Ahmed.

St Petersburg is estimated to be the third largest city in Europe with a population of around 4.6 million residents. Passenger demand is expected to be mostly tourist driven, but also boosted by the oil and manufacturing sectors and from the city’s significant expatriate community.

The UAE is a major destination for Russian tourists and investors and thousands have made it their home. The new St Petersburg service will further satisfy that demand, while providing better links with key markets across Asia.

As one of the few wide-body operators serving St Petersburg, Emirates SkyCargo will be able to offer increased options to the market.

A diverse range of commodities, such as pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, garments, electronics and flowers will be imported. They will arrive from markets like Japan, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, South Africa, Ethiopia and New Zealand.

Spare parts for power stations, aircraft and ships, along with tobacco products, are expected to move in the other direction – heading to destinations including Japan, India, China, Vietnam and Angola.
