GATHER YOUR GOONS AND HEAD TO THE RENAISSANCE BLACKSTONE CHICAGO HOTEL FOR A DEAL

November 23, 2011 on 6:56 pm | In Chicago, Great Lakes, Midwest | Comments Off

AND A DRINK – THAT WOULD BE CRIMINAL TO PASS UP

Toast the anniversary of Prohibition’s demise with the Good to be a Gangster Package at the Blackstone and special cocktails at Mercat a la Planxa on Repeal Day, December 5
(CHICAGO) – What will you be doing on Repeal Day 2011? The same thing they were doing on Repeal Day 1933 – having a drink! Celebrate the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition with the Good to be a Gangster Package at the Renaissance Blackstone Chicago Hotel, complete with stylish accommodations, a DVD copy of Ken Burns’ recent documentary Prohibition, and an official Gangster Tour where guides named “Al Dente” and “Shoulders” traverse some of the city’s most infamous sites of that laughably “dry” era.

Fortunately it doesn’t take mob connections to score a great hotel deal in Chicago these days. Inspired by fabled stories of notorious rum-running criminals past, the Renaissance Blackstone is offering the Good to be a Gangster package, including:

Overnight accommodations
Two tickets to the Gangster Tour
A copy of Get Capone signed by author Jonathan Eig
A copy of Ken Burns’ Prohibition on DVD
A Prohibition Cocktail in the hotel’s Mercat a la Planxa restaurant
The Good to be a Gangster package starts at $189, valid through March 2012, based on availability. To book, go to www.theblackstonehotel.com  or call 1 800-468-3571 and mention rate code ZJL.

Toast the crazy days of Prohibition on Repeal Day, December 5. Upon check in, guests will receive a wink, a nod, and a card good for one drink at Mercat a la Planxa. The restaurant will be shaking and stirring special cocktails just for the anniversary of Prohibition’s 1933 repeal, including the “Mint Julep,” fashioned with whiskey or gin, and the “Snowball Cocktail,” prepared with gin.

The Renaissance Blackstone Hotel is a fitting address to mark the end of Prohibition. Ten years before repeal, Charles “Lucky” Luciano gathered a group of gangsters at the Blackstone for the first-ever “Crime Convention” in 1923, or so the story goes. Luciano wasn’t the only shady character to find comfort at the hotel. The godfather of crime, Al Capone, was a regular in the Blackstone’s barbershop, and Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, based on Scarface’s rise to power in the Second City, was filmed within the Blackstone’s walls.

Opened in 1910, closed in 1999, and reopened in 2008 following a $128 million showcase restoration by Sage Hospitality, The Blackstone’s décor is a dynamic mix of historic architecture and savvy design combined with luxury amenities and thoughtful guest services. Natural Retreats Vacation Residences in Hot Springs, Virginia

November 23, 2011 on 6:55 pm | In The South | Comments Off

Company’s Central Concierge and Reservations to be based in Hot Springs, Virginia with a selection of exquisite vacation cottages located throughout The Homestead Preserve

UK-based hospitality company Natural Retreats has staked its claim to one of the most beautiful regions in the southeastern U.S. with the launch of Natural Retreats US, Inc. and Natural Retreats Virginia Hot Springs. Surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains on the southwest edge of the Old Dominion, the Hot Springs region offers the perfect foundation for the company’s US-based office and second destination location.

Launching today, the selection of luxury-residence locations are set to re-establish the Hot Springs region as one of the country’s most prominent historical holiday destinations. Virginia Hot Springs was originally bought to life in 1888 when JP Morgan headed a group of investors who helped bring prosperity to the region by rebuilding the resort from the ground up. Natural Retreats now has the intention to establish this heritage and help bring the region back to its former glory and believes that Virginia Hot Springs will become a top destination for US travellers over the next 10 years. In conjunction with real estate agents, Clarkson Wallace and Associates, Natural Retreats plans to operate and expand a portfolio of luxury residences in the area. The launch follows close on the heels of the May 2011 opening of Natural Retreats South Fork Lodge, on Idaho’s legendary Snake River.

“We are thrilled to continue our U.S. expansion in this stunning and iconic area of Virginia,” said Matthew Spence, Founder and Managing Director of Natural Retreats. “The location’s historical significance, natural beauty and abundant lifestyle and wilderness activities assure an extraordinary stay for family and leisure travellers of all types; precisely what we look for with every Natural Retreats destination.”

Natural Retreats Virginia Hot Springs opens with its first four residences within the 11,500 acre tract of the Homestead Preserve, arrayed with luxury furnishings and contemporary technologies. These first four residences include:

Shepherd’s Cottage: This natural fieldstone and lovingly reassembled antique log cabin located in the Sheep Meadow area of the Homestead Preserve features a large living room with wood-burning fireplace, lofted ceiling, a gourmet eat-in kitchen and three bedrooms. The covered front porch has swing seating and rockers, and the back porch is arrayed for grilling and dining in any weather. Follow the stone path and footbridge to a fire circle in the woods – the perfect spot for roasting marshmallows.

Trailview Cottage: This antique log cabin is located in the Delafield Rise neighbourhood of Hot Springs. Set with room for six people amongst three bedrooms, the cabin has a large kitchen and living room with 18-foot vaulted ceiling and stone-hearth wood-burning fireplace. The master bedroom features an in-suite bath, while a second ground floor bedroom has two twin beds. The upstairs “sleeping loft” has a queen bed, and two additional day beds surrounded by a stone fireplace and wet bar in the media room. This cottage also comes comfortably equipped with an outdoor fire pit.

• Donald Ross Trail: Located in the Homestead Preserve’s Sheep Meadow neighbourhood, this stately brick home is just a short walk away from The Homestead Resort. The perfect gathering place for large families or executive retreats, this exquisitely appointed home features a gourmet kitchen, a formal dining room that seats 10, a great room with fireplace, flat screen tv, lounge with bar, a quiet library with television, five supremely comfortable bedrooms (four with king size beds and one with two twins) each of which have their own private bath, plus covered porches for outdoor entertaining. The lower level entertainment area is an ideal private sports pub complete with large flat screen televisions, bar, pool table and table football. The fully-integrated sound system includes radio channels and an I-Pod docking station that can broadcast throughout the entire house.

• Overlook Manor: The house and the grounds reflect the direct influence of its English heritage, Victorian sensibility while appreciating the ruggedness and sense of mountain living in the wilds of Virginia. The home comfortably sleeps 12 in five bedrooms, each with private bath. There is a convenient half bath on the main floor for guests. The cosy family room with large screen TV and gas fireplace is the perfect place to watch a movie or the big game while fabulous meals are prepared in the gourmet kitchen. Off the kitchen, the conservatory is a quiet place for reading and soaking in the sun or the perfect place to enjoy afternoon cocktails from the bar area there.

Natural Retreats guests can enjoy access to many of the amenities of the historic Homestead resort – a sprawling, 3,000-acre hotel and spa. Founded in 1766 and visited by Thomas Jefferson, the resort is now awash in recreational possibilities from three championship golf courses to the family oriented ski/snowboard and tubing area to sporting clays and horseback riding. Guests of these first four residences can also enjoy access to the private facilities of the Old Dairy Community Centre in Warm Springs, with a gourmet market, fitness centre, spa, pool, complimentary mountain bikes, and more.

The development at Virginia Hot Springs will also include the launch of a Natural Retreats Outfitters, with professional guides available for guests to experience a range of outdoor activities. From wilderness safaris, world-class fishing, guided hiking, boating, wildlife viewing and water sports Natural Retreats Outfitters will be able to organise any activity to meet every visitor’s needs.

Natural Retreats also will be working to help redevelop Main Street Hot Springs in a number of exciting projects to again bring the region back to its former glory. And, with an additional Residence Club ownership opportunity soon to be available to anyone enjoying the Virginia Hot Springs vacation experience, Natural Retreats will firmly be establishing itself in the region.

Nightly rates at Natural Retreats Virginia Hot Springs (www.naturalretreats.com) start at $350 (*£227)per night plus tax in Shepherd’s Cottage; $400 (*£259) per night plus tax in Trailview Cottage. For reservations and further information, please call 0844 384 3166 or email the Concierge team at concierge@naturalretreats.com

Michelin Guide Awards First Star to Äbtestube

November 23, 2011 on 6:49 pm | In Switzerland | Comments Off

The Gourmet Restaurant at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz Shines In Michelin’s 2012 Switzerland Guide

Äbtestube, the gourmet restaurant helmed by Chef Roland Schmid at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz in Switzerland, is now the proud owner of its first Michelin star, as awarded by the Michelin Guide on the 15th November 2011.

Michelin stars are bestowed only on those restaurants that deserve a traveller’s special attention. A select group of 11 restaurants were awarded their first star in the Michelin Guide to Switzerland 2012, bringing the countries’ total number of starred restaurants to 96. Switzerland is among the European countries with the most Michelin stars per capita.

The Äbtestube is the culinary flagship at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, the five star resort in Switzerland. With a cosy yet sophisticated alpine design, the restaurant seats up to 30 diners in three intimate dining areas. The space housing the restaurant was originally built in 1774 for local abbots, giving rise to the name Äbtestube, meaning “abbot’s room“. With simple wooden furnishings and arched ceilings, the space has a welcoming, traditional Swiss feel.

Roland Schmid’s mission is to delight diners with elegant, authentic dishes, with a strong focus on carefully selected, high quality ingredients. Guests might expect “Swiss Prim“ meat sourced from the very best local suppliers, the freshest Zander fished from Lake Constance and regionally grown vegetables to be amongst the highlights of Schmid’s menu. Combining tried and tested techniques with new and innovative concepts, the Chef demonstrates dishes that mix tradition with a touch of the avante-garde, drawing upon both Swiss and international flavours. A starter might be Six Snails from Freiamt, served with snail ravioli, parsley puree and shiitake sabayon, followed by Trianon of “Swiss Prim“ veal, served with truffle and black salsify for main course, and finishing with a Chocolate, Pear and Pumpkin Cube or a selection of cheeses, selected by Maïtre Fromager Bernard Antony.

“I would like to thank the guests that have visited our restaurant from across the globe, and my dedicated team who work hard to ensure diners experience nothing less than the very best in culinary magic. I am honoured to receive this prestigious award from Michelin and look forward to continue evolving our gourmet cooking at Äbtestube and to offering some of the very best cuisine in Switzerland“ commented Roland Schmid.

Compulsory body scanners to be rolled out at airports

November 23, 2011 on 6:47 pm | In Airlines | Comments Off

Air travellers will not be allowed to opt out of body scanners at airports, the Government announced today.

But in the future machines, rather than security staff, will see the apparent ‘naked’ images of passengers, Transport Secretary Justine Greening said.

Ms Greening also said that she would consider carefully the EC report on the health risks of scanners, amid concerns that the backscatter scanner, which is being trialled at Manchester airport, emits ionising radiation.

Manchester, with Heathrow and Gatwick, has been trialling body scanners following the Christmas Day transatlantic flight incident when a would-be terrorist had an explosive device concealed in his underwear.

In a Parliamentary written statement, Ms Greening said she believed, in principle, that scanners should be rolled out more widely at UK airports.

But she added that the precise timing of future installations of such devices would depend on how quickly the new generation of scanners can be developed.

York’s Festival of Angels This Christmas

The annual Festival of Angels brings festive ice sculptures to York’s Minster Quarter.

YORK, ENGLAND– A collection of dramatic ice sculptures will be seen on the streets of York next month, when the city’s Festival of Angels returns for 2011.

Held during the run-up to Christmas each year, the event is a popular winter celebration that also includes snow showers, street entertainment, shopping stalls and plenty of food and drink.

This year’s festival is due to take place on Saturday December 10th and Sunday December 11th.

The ice sculptures are the main attraction of the event, which has been held in York since 2000.

Illuminated by the city’s Christmas lights, these elaborate creations are positioned throughout the network of cobbled streets that make up the Minster Quarter.

People who attend the event on the Sunday will also have a chance to witness the parade of angels, which will be led by the beautiful golden angel.

The festival is just one of several seasonal celebrations due to take place in York this winter, with the St Nicholas Fayre occurring at the end of November and the Christmas markets opening on Saturday December 3rd.

LateRooms.com recommends a wide range of hotels in York that could appeal to festive visitors, including The Churchill Hotel.
