Emirates to Add Third A380 Service to London Heathrow

December 25, 2011 on 3:31 pm | In Abu Dhabi, Asia, Dubai, London, Middle East, United Kingdom | Comments Off

DUBAI, UAE — Emirates’ A380 services to London Heathrow will become triple daily from 24th January 2012.

This will mean three out of the airline’s five daily flights into Heathrow will be served by the superjumbo.

Emirates’ flagship aircraft will replace Boeing 777s on EK flight 029 from Dubai and on the return flight EK 030, adding capacity to one of the airline’s busiest routes.

“Given the popularity of Emirates’ A380s, I know this news will be well received by our customers flying between London Heathrow, Dubai and beyond. As these magnificent aircraft continue to join our fleet, we can offer more seats and choice in and out of high density points, while enabling a greater number of passengers to benefit from the Emirates’ A380 experience,” said Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations, Europe & Russian Federation.

The airline brought its own brand of double decker, equipped with an Onboard Lounge and Shower Spas, to the British capital in December 2008. After supporting EK flights 001 and 002 between Dubai and Heathrow, EK 003 and EK 004 became A380 services in July of last year.

The giant aircraft, known for its quietness and spaciousness, offers 14 flat-bed First Class Private Suites with electrically operated doors and 76 fully-flat seats in Business Class – all with aisle access – on the upper deck. Downstairs, there are 427 comfortable contoured seats in Economy, spread across four separate cabins.

Passengers in all classes can settle down to more than 1000 channels of films, television programmes, music and games carried on the ice entertainment system.

A personal satellite phone is fitted to each seat, which also carries a seat-back sms and email service, along with seat to seat calling and a “My USB” personal picture viewing facility.

The third A380 service into Heathrow is another major investment for Emirates in the UK, where it operates 105 weekly flights via six gateways; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow.

In September of last year, Manchester, which is now a triple daily service, became Emirates’ second UK gateway to be served by the superjumbo, replacing EK flight 017 and 018.

The international airline of the UAE has a fleet of 17 A380s amongst a total fleet of 162 aircraft, flying to 116 destinations – now including Baghdad.

At the Dubai Air Show on Sunday (13th November), Emirates announced an order for an additional 50 Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft, worth approximately US$ 18 billion (AED 66 billion) in list prices. The agreement also included 20 Boeing 777-300 ER options valued at US$8 billion (AED 29.4 billion), lifting the total order to 70 aircraft worth US$ 26 billion (AED 95.4 billion).

UK A380 timings:

• EK 001 departs Dubai 0745hrs – arrives London Heathrow at 1135hrs
• EK 002 departs Heathrow 1335hrs – arrives Dubai 0025hrs
• EK 003 departs Dubai 1430hrs – arrives Heathrow 1815hrs
• EK 004 departs Heathrow 2015hrs – arrives Dubai at 0700hrs

Baghdad, IRAQ — Emirates touched down in Baghdad today, marking its first flight to the capital city of Iraq.

Passengers onboard the flight to Baghdad made good use of Emirates’ extensive network connecting through Dubai from a number of global destinations such as; Australia, England, the US, India, Pakistan and the UAE. Amongst the passengers onboard the inaugural was Ahmed Khoory, Emirates’ Senior Vice President Commercial Operations, Gulf, Middle East and Iran with his special guests HH Sheikh Juma Al Maktoum, Chairman SJM Group of Companies, Salah Al Ansari, Director Visitor Information Bureau, Department of Tourism and Commerce, Saood Kankazar, Director Air Transport and International Affairs, Dubai Civil Aviation, Wadee Ayyed, Chairman Al Handal International Group, Mohammed Ayyed, CEO Al Handal International Group and other VIPs.

On landing in Baghdad the aircraft received a water-cannon salute before local Iraqi media attended an official welcoming ceremony and press conference inside the airport terminal.

“Baghdad holds significant potential for Emirates given the city’s mandate to rebuild,” said Mr Khoory.

“As seen from today’s flight Baghdad is an important destination for many of our markets, with a good mix of leisure and trade traffic travelling into the capital from more than a dozen international cities. We have been working closely with the GCAA to make this destination possible for our passengers and it is gratifying to finally be here.”

Baghdad is the second destination that Emirates has launched in Iraq this year, with Basra successfully launching in February.

“We are seeing robust booking levels in both directions for Basra and expect the same level of interest for Baghdad. These markets are high revenue generating making them key destinations for the airline,” added Khoory.

In October Emirates visited Baghdad for a pre-launch roadshow with a strong turnout from local businesses and key Iraqi Government Officials.

Emirates is operating an Airbus 330 between Dubai and Baghdad, in a three-class configuration. EK941 departs Dubai at 07:55am touching down at Baghdad International Airport at 09:40am the same day. At 11:35am, return flight EK942 will depart Baghdad arriving in Dubai at 14:55pm the same day. The service will operate on a Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Eaton Smart, Hong Kong’s Expert Wedding Planner

December 25, 2011 on 3:16 pm | In Asia, China, Weddings Honeymoons | Comments Off

WEDDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Eaton Smart, Hong Kong hosts almost 500 weddings each year, serving around 89,000 guests. Every day, the team of professional wedding planners consults with couples to ensure their special day is perfect. Expert and experienced, the Eaton Smart, Hong Kong team lists the Top Six wedding trends for 2012.

Plan for the Planet: “Many guests are now requesting sustainable, eco-friendly menus,” explains Carman Suen, Director of Catering and Business Development. “Eaton Smart advises guests against having shark’s fin and encourages them to replace it with dishes that are more environmentally friendly.”

“It has been a challenge enforcing our environmental policy when it comes to shark’s fin soup. Some clients struggle with the idea of not having shark’s fin on the menu. We try to educate the client on sustainability. For those who insist on serving shark’s fin soup during a banquet, our team advises them to choose an alternative soup that is similar in taste to shark’s fin. As an added incentive, this alternative is offered at a discounted price.”

Suit Yourself: As Carman points out, today couples prefer to tailor a specific menu. “In the past, the catering menus were set and the choices were either Western or Chinese cuisines. As customers become more sophisticated and broaden their knowledge of new foods, many now request a mix of Western and traditional Chinese dishes,” she explains. “We need to be flexible with our F&B offerings to accommodate our clients’ needs and customize individual menus.”

Working for the Weekend: “Eaton Smart has seen an increasing number of couples opting for weekend weddings,” notes Carman. “We used to have an even mix of weddings throughout the week, but weekend weddings have become extremely popular. Couples want their guests to relax and enjoy themselves and not have to worry about work the next day.”

Sweeten the Deal: Traditional pre-dinner snacks and canapés have lost their flavour. Today, couples are opting for cupcakes or a corner filled with candies and sweets. “These add a sense of fun to the occasion,” explains Carman. “It’s always a talking point for the older guests. Of course, we also have a rising number of diet-conscious clients who want healthier menus and options.”

Keep it Simple: “In terms of bridal wear, we’ve seen a move away from lacy, fussy and frilly dresses,” adds Carman. “The trend today is sleek and simple, a look that is clean and uncluttered.”

Burn up the Floor: As they start their life together, couples don’t want to put a foot wrong. Perhaps that’s why many are hiring choreographers to direct their bridal waltz (or tango, rumba or salsa).

“It’s not just couples who are putting on a show,” adds Carman. “We’re also seeing bridal parties creating elaborate dance routines for the guests.”
