Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa York’s First 5 Star Hotel

December 24, 2011 on 10:16 pm | In London, United Kingdom | Comments Off

Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa has become York’s first 5 star hotel and the only AA 5 star rated hotel in Yorkshire.

In addition, The Grill Room at The Grand restaurant has been awarded two prestigious AA Rosettes for the outstanding quality of its culinary offering.

There are just 90 other AA 5 star hotels in the UK and, excluding The Grand, only 23 outside London.

In awarding the 5 stars, a spokesperson for the AA commented:

“The Grand has achieved one of the highest accolades awarded by the AA. 5 black stars are a symbol of excellence achieved through dedication, high levels of investment and a passion to be the best. We are delighted that York has its first 5 star hotel.”

The £25m Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa opened in May 2010 following the extensive refurbishment of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters – one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings.

General Manager, Maria Florou, said:

“When The Grand opened its doors last year, it was with the stated ambition of becoming York’s first AA 5 star hotel, and we are over the moon that we have now achieved that.

“The team here deserve enormous credit for what they have done – they have worked incredibly hard and have put their heart and soul into this project. But we all know that an even greater challenge lies ahead, and that is maintaining and even exceeding the high standards that we have set for ourselves.

“Our guest feedback tells us that we have always delivered a 5 star experience. But this weekend it will feel extra special to welcome guests into a 5 star rated hotel.”

The AA award two Rosettes to restaurants that demonstrate “innovation, greater technical skill and consistency and judgement in combining and balancing ingredients”.

Head Chef, Martin Henley, said:

“The two AA Rosettes put us firmly on Yorkshire’s culinary map. Food lovers know that Rosettes are a guaranteed seal of quality and so lots of people who have not yet dined at The Grill Room will be eager to do so in the coming months.”

The Grand has 107 bedrooms, including 13 suites and a lavish penthouse. Many of the rooms have views of the historic City Walls and York’s spectacular Minster and, as a Grade II listed building, many of the original features remain. These include beautiful mosaic tiling, parquet floors and wood panelled meeting rooms.

You don’t have to check in to check out The Grand: anyone can experience the champagne and cocktail bar, whisky lounge, HQ Restaurant (which serves Afternoon Tea and is a private dining room) and The Grill Room at The Grand.

The Grand is also home to Spa at the Grand, one of Yorkshire’s most luxurious spas. Set in the building’s atmospheric vaults, The Spa offers a range of therapeutic face and body care treatments, and guests also have access to the gym, sauna, swimming pool, steam room and relaxation rooms.

Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa, York was awarded ‘Hotel of the Year’ at the York Tourism Awards 2011 and was Highly Commended at the 2011 White Rose Awards.

Cedar Court Hotels is Yorkshire’s largest independent hotel collection. In addition to The Grand, it has four star hotels in Wakefield, Leeds/Bradford, Harrogate and Huddersfield/Halifax.

Black Tomato Handpicks Hot Destinations For 2012

December 24, 2011 on 10:14 pm | In London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

Each New Year brings with it a whole raft of new places and possibilities. New areas are opening up and there are alternative ways to experience more familiar ground. So to celebrate, take a look at Black Tomato’s pick of places that are tipped to be big for 2012.

LULEA, SWEDEN – Meet Lulea, a little-known winter wonderland on the northern coast of Swedish Lapland that has caught our eye. Think vast Narnia-esque vistas shared only by reindeer, lip smacking regional fare, and exhilarating adventures on ice. With Swedish cuisine having a moment here in the U.K., this little-known region epitomises what Swedish gastronomy is all about – taking the shortest possible route to the table with uber-fresh ingredients from the nearby forests, fields and rivers.

TEXAS, U.S.A – Think of Texas and think of cowboys? Naturally. But what about its eclectic mix of people, growing arts scene and hundreds of miles of untouched Gulf coastline? The Texas of today is a far cry from the ubiquitous cowboys and cattle ranches in most peoples’ minds and an area of true untapped potential. Of course, it retains the authentic cowboy culture we love but why not sample the beaches of Padre Island or the music scene of Austin at the South by Southwest Festival to turn preconception on its Stetson-laden head in 2012.

BELIZE – It’s time to get Belize on the travel wish list for next year as the country celebrates the closing of the Mayan Calendar. The Calendar completes its 13th cycle or B’ak’tun after nearly 52,000 years meaning there’s not a better time to get under the skin of this ancient Mayan civilisation. Couple this with a blessed Caribbean that no superlative can quite do justice to see why Belize is our choice for an alternative Caribbean getaway next year.

MYANMAR – All eyes have been on Myanmar and now for good reason. The country has gone from being one of the world’s most controversial holiday spots to one of the most exciting destinations on our travel radar. Virtually untouched by tourism, Myanmar is the place to head for authentic cultural South East Asia. Get here before the crowds for the chance to explore Yangon’s pagodas at sunset, Bagan’s 4,000 temples and kick back on unspoilt Ngapali beach.

GALICIA, SPAIN – This lesser-known region of Spain is our pick for a quick gourmet hit next year. Whilst France pulls in the crowds and the nearby Basque region steals the foodie headlines, Galicia is where gourmands-in-the-know should be headed. With a whole festival in February dedicated to the chorizo sausage no less, Galicia is as much a feast for the eyes as the belly. The oh-so-fresh seafood and local delicacy, percebes (goose neck barnacles) plucked off the rugged coastline by hardy fishermen are what’s drawing us in. Check out the historical town of Noia for authentic Galician culture and beaches the locals try to keep secret.

TANZANIA – Tanzania is our pick for a more off the radar safari experience. The Mahale Mountains are becoming more accessible to trekkers and is the place to spot chimpanzees. Next year, we will offer some unique experiences to the country that are so much more than the average safari including pop-up camps in little-visited areas, climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano and fishing with the locals in the second deepest lake in the world.

PHILIPPINES – The beautiful archipelago of the Philippines has gotten us smitten for next year. We’ve fallen hook line and sinker for its combination of vibrant cultural influences, world class wreck diving and tropical rainforest spilling out onto myriad islands (we’re talking 7,000 of them). But it’s the off the beaten track location that is the real clincher for us. Our favourites are the remote Sugar Beach, Negros and Araia Island for stylish private island living. All this natural goodness minus the crowds? Now that’s why it is our pick for the alternative South East Asian island hopping adventure.

NAMIBIA – Namibia turns the Africa in most peoples’ minds on its head. Yes, chatter from the Brangelina days has died down but it’s this unrelenting ability to surprise combined with a wild untamed beauty that keeps Namibia high on our travel radar. In this land of stark contrasts, the terrifyingly barren Skeleton Coast region remains home to the San, a tribe of semi nomadic hunter gatherers – a people we find especially intriguing – who have survived in this stunning yet harsh environment for thousands of years. In 2012, we get right up close with these indigenous Bushmen on a totally new trip that has got us counting down the days to the new year.

YUKON, CANADA – Sitting neatly next to America’s chilliest of states, the north-easterly Canadian region of Yukon is truly one to watch for next year. Why? Rich in gold rush history and still retaining a ‘last frontier’ quality, this little-visited territory offers a beguiling combination of super-sized landscapes, robust locals – tall tales and well-woven stories are a given – and a mix of ancient and contemporary cultures, making the idea of being a traveller rather than a tourist, a reality. Kayak down the regions namesake, the mighty Yukon River, check out northerly Dawson for a slower pace of life and don’t miss the mountain trails of Kluane National park. Mark this on the map for 2012, before everyone else does.

TAHITI – There’s that element of retro about these islands that we can’t wait to revisit with a new 2012 gloss. With new islands opening up, incredible marine life and diving, Tahiti and the surrounding islands are our pick for more intrepid sailing adventure. The smaller, lesser-visited islands of Tikehau and Manihi are a must for authentic rustic Polynesian living. Take a sail boat to venture to uninhabited islands Motu Tautau and Motu Mahana and make a star-crossed date for summer 2012 to observe the rare transit of Planet Venus as it sweeps across the sky high above French Polynesia.

There are few places with such a variety of beautiful scenery and so many wonderful photographic opportunities.

Shell House is an extraordinary building located on the beach at Porlock Weir. It’s architecturally striking and offers a wonderfully light and airy open plan living area with views across the harbour. The property offers a magnificent kitchen and four individual and impressive bedrooms each with king size beds and televisions. There is also a huge ‘cinema‘ and games room. Shell House is a short stroll from two excellent restaurants and a real ale pub.

Older Folk Are Splashing Out More Than £1,000 On Foreign Coach Trips

December 24, 2011 on 10:12 pm | In London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

While millions are making financial cutbacks, the over-55s are spending more than ever on what are now called “escorted tours”.

Bookings of premium holidays are up year on year by a staggering 73%, according to leading travel operator Shearings Holidays, which carries almost one million passengers every year in the UK and Europe.

Its premium Grand Tourer escorted tours to Spain, Germany and Eastern Europe cost, on average, more than £1,000 per person per trip.

Caroline Brown, commercial director for Shearings said: “Today’s over-55s are more likely than any other age group to splash out on luxury holidays, staying in premium accommodation and enjoying exclusive travel options.

“Many are in a fortunate position of having more time and disposable income than younger couples and families, so they are able to enjoy more of the luxuries in life. The strength of our 2011 sales for our premium Grand Tourer holidays is evidence of this trend.

“The types of holidays seeing the largest increases in bookings are those which include carefully selected four and five star hotels, transport on the most up-to-date coaches, with extra legroom and panoramic views, and VIP-style air travel, with a personal greeting service and airport lounge pass.”

Research shows that people over the age of 55 take 35.6 million trips annually and spend more money on their breaks than any other age group (45% more than 18-34 year olds).

New Guide To Tracing Your Scottish Ancestry

December 24, 2011 on 10:11 pm | In Books Guidebooks, Scotland | Comments Off

Scotland has long been a country of rich history and heritage and has an estimated 50 million people from around the world who can lay claim to having Scots ancestry. In order to capitalise on the increasing interest in tracing family roots, spurred on by shows like BBC’s “Who do you think you are?” and countless radio shows, VisitScotland has launched a guide to tracing Scottish ancestry which will highlight the unusual and surprising places people can go to learn more about their ancestors. Launched to coincide with St Andrews Day, the guide is available to download from www.visitscotland.com/surprise

The guide comes in an easy to use map format and is suitable for those just starting to trace their routes to the more advanced and experienced. It highlights a mix of Scottish visitor attractions, museums, libraries and research centres across the country and includes everything from the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, Perth Museum and Art Gallery and Verdant Works in Dundee to a range of research centres including the Scotland’s People Centre based in Edinburgh, where the likes of Billy Connolly, Sir Alex Ferguson, Lulu and Gordon Ramsay have all had their ancestry traced. Also featured is the Highland Council Genealogy Centre and Inverness and the Mitchell Library in Glasgow.

Researching Scottish roots and ancestry couldn’t be simpler, it’s as easy as writing your name, date and place of birth and the family tree has started; adding in family members helps extend it and the new VisitScotland guide and Scotland’s world class depth of ancestral records showcases some of Scotland’s must visit genealogy and history hotspots, including:

Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, Inverness- There are many different stories about Culloden. Visitors often have their own views on the battle, the events that led up to it and those that flowed from it. Now, 250 years on, Culloden is still a site that connects visitors intimately with the past.

New Lanark World Heritage Centre, South Lanarkshire – Founded by David Dale in 1785, the village became famous as a model industrial community under the enlightened management of Dale’s son-in-law, Robert Owen, from 1800-1825. Owen transformed life in New Lanark with ideas and opportunities which were at least a hundred years ahead of their time. Child labour and corporal punishment were abolished, and villagers were provided with decent homes, schools and evening classes, free health care, and affordable food.

National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh – Scotland is a country with a remarkable history. So it should come as no surprise that Scotland is home to plethora of museums and heritage centres. These range from the major, internationally renowned collections in Edinburgh’s National Museum of Scotland to hundreds of small centres that specialise in the history of local communities.

Scottish Borders Archive and Local History Centre – Visit this centre to find out about Borders family history, communities, industries and people. Discover how the Scottish Borders has evolved and developed through the centuries in the state of the art archive facility.

Visitors to www.visitscotland.com/surprise  will not only be able to download the guide but will also be able to take advantage of over 350 money-off vouchers on accommodation offers on things to see, do, eat and drink across Scotland.

Early Birds Set To Swoop On 2012 Park Discounts

December 24, 2011 on 10:07 pm | In Cabinweb, Ireland, London, Scotland, United Kingdom, Wales | Comments Off

An end to nail-biting waits for last-minute holiday bargains has been signalled by a major holiday company. Park Holidays UK has decided that for 2012, early birds can peck up the best bargains.

In a move which mirrors budget airline ticketing, the parks group is currently offering summer holidays next year with up to 35 percent off its published brochure prices.

But unlike cut-price flights, the discounted holidays allow later free changes to dates and locations.

Up to £150.00 has been taken off one-week holidays, and up to £70.00 shaved from shorter breaks on the company’s 25 seaside holiday parks in Devon and southern England.

With some summer weeks priced at around £435.00 per family in the company’s brochure, the early-bird discounts can save around one third of the total holiday cost.

A deposit of just £60.00 will secure any of the cut-price deals which will remain on the company’s website (www.ParkHolidaysUK.com) until the end of January 2012.

But although the offers will then be taken down, Park Holidays UK director Tony Clish says there is no risk of buying a bargain now and later needing to make changes to the booking:

“We realise that many people will want to secure one of these deals immediately, but might not yet have made a definite decision on where and when they want to go,” he said.

“For that reason, we have taken the unusual step of making the bookings entirely flexible with no penalty fees for changing later to a different park or a different date,” added Tony.

A major reason for introducing the up-front discount scheme, he said, was to try and prevent the frustration often experienced by those making last-minute bookings:

“Many of our parks were to up to capacity during periods of last summer, and we had to disappoint a lot of people who had held out for what they hoped would be the best prices.

“Now we are making it clear that there is no need to endure a nail-biting run-up to your holiday because the keenest savings are to be had earlier rather than later.

“It means mum and dad can get the best price possible now, and kids can get an instant answer to their questions about next summer’s holiday which usually start around Christmas!” added Tony.

The company’s discount 2012 holidays are currently available at www.ParkHolidaysUK.com

Angel Publicity is delighted to now be working with onefinestay (www.onefinestay.com). onefinestay enables visitors to London to live like a local by staying in a distinctive home while the owner is out of town. The stay includes all the convenience and comfort of a hotel but with the unique character of some of the finest London homes. White Company bathroom products and fluffy towels are the norm with onefinestay and the price is fixed from the outset so guests know what they’re paying for up front.

Billed as an ‘unhotel’ guests make their booking through the onefinestay reservations team who then match the appropriate pied-a-terre with guests wishes. On arrival a member of the onefinestay staff meet and greet the guest at their temporary London pad where they are given a tour of the property, handed a set of keys and given a pre-loaded iPhone which features the property owner’s top tips about what to do in the area. At the end of the stay guests simply leave their house or apartment and the onefinestay cleaners are ready and waiting to move in.

The prices start from £150 per apartment per night going up to £1,000 per home per night, prices are always for the home rather than per room or person. There’s a host of homes to choose from including a Mayfair minimalist apartment, a family home in leafy Primrose Hill or a bachelor pad in Shoreditch. This service suits everyone from business travellers to London, families with children or those flocking to the capital for the 2012 Olympics.
