Best of Australian Golf

December 31, 2011 on 1:05 pm | In Australia, Beachbooker, Golf Resorts, New South Wales, Northern, Queensland, South Australia, Sydney, Tasmania, Victoria, Western | Comments Off

A major new partnership between the Australian golf and tourism industries has been announced today, which aims to use the appeal of the country’s very best golf courses to position Australia as one of the world’s leading golf tourism destinations.

‘Great Golf Courses of Australia’ is an innovative marketing collaboration between the country’s premier golf courses, Tourism Australia, State Tourism Offices and the PGA of Australia aimed at tapping into the tourism potential of a sport today worth $3 billion annually to the Australian economy.

The group will initially comprise the six Australian courses as featured by US Golf Magazine in its ‘Top 100′ courses of the world: Barnbougle Dunes and Barnbougle Lost Farm in Tasmania, Kingston Heath and Royal Melbourne in Victoria, New South Wales Golf Course in Sydney and Royal Adelaide in South Australia.

Liz Sattler, Director of Great Golf Courses of Australia and daughter of Richard Sattler, owner of Tasmania’s Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm golf courses, believes that relying on the quality of Australia’s golfing product alone is not enough to establish the country as an international golf tourism destination.

“In order for Australia to establish itself as one of the world’s leading golf destinations, we must continue to drive the buzz that has been created around Australia in recent years and in particular off the back of the Presidents Cup. Successful marketing, promotion and distribution of Australian Golf product to the international market is vital if we are to gain a great share of the golf tourism market pie.

“Using our six top 100 ranked courses to front the exceptional array of golfing product that Australia has to offer, and combining the marketing and distribution offered by this partnership, we can establish Australia as one of the world’s truly great golfing destinations. We believe that Great Golf Courses of Australia is the right vehicle to drive this forward,” Ms Sattler said.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy believes that Australia is well placed to tap into the huge tourism potential of golf and through this latest collaboration will be able to grab a bigger share of the multi-million dollar golf tourism market.

“Golf is a hugely popular sport in Australia with around 1.2 million golfers playing on more than 1,650 different courses around Australia each year and, according to a 2010 Australian Golf Industry Council report, contributing around $3 billion to the country’s economy,” Mr McEvoy said.

“We currently boast six of the world’s top 100 courses, as well as many others that are located in iconic and distinctly Australian settings, which offer up real tourism potential. We definitely see an opportunity here to build golf into the holiday experience, particularly by tapping into those overseas markets that love their golf, such as China, Korea and Japan.

“Tourism Australia is really pleased to be able to support this new initiative, which allows us to support the tourism and golf industries by packing up and promoting the best of the best of Australia’s golf courses.

“With the PGA on board, and six of the world’s best golf courses to get us started, we have an opportunity here to position Australia as one of the world’s leading golf tourism destinations by showcasing its best courses, and the iconic settings in which they are set,” Mr McEvoy said.

Brian Thorburn, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA, is hopeful that the six courses so far signed up to ‘Great Golf Courses of Australia’ is just the start.

“Golf tourism is incredibly important to both the tourism and sporting economies and our partnership with Tourism Australia will ensure our country continues to be regarded as a leading golf tourism destination,” Mr Thorburn said.

“With over 2,000 PGA Professionals based around this great golfing country, our Members will welcome the opportunity to introduce many new international visitors to Australian golf.

“Additionally, through our internationally based Members and the World PGA Alliance, the PGA of Australia has an extensive international network and we look forward to promoting this initiative through PGA Professionals globally,” Mr Thorburn said.

It is envisaged that the partnership will be extended in subsequent phases to include some of the other outstanding golf courses and experiences on offer in Australia, many within iconic settings, ideally placed to benefit for both domestic and international golf tourism visitors.

‘Great Golf Courses of Australia’ will provide a comprehensive and centralised resource from which golfers and media from around the world can access information on Australia’s leading golf courses and iconic Australian golf experiences.

Novotel and Microsoft Team up to Launch the ‘Hotel Room of the Future’

December 31, 2011 on 12:55 pm | In Golf Resorts, Hotels | Comments Off

New architectural design and new technologies change the face of the traditional hotel room

Novotel has partnered with Microsoft to launch a world first: the hotel room of the future.

The room, named Room 3120 at Novotel Paris Vaugirard Montparnasse, showcases the latest in cutting-edge technology and innovative design, with Novotel and Microsoft working closely together to create the revolutionary room that allows guests to sample the ultimate in hi-tech hotel rooms. The visionary room will take guests on a technological journey with features including a Kinect interface, Sensorit mirror based on Kinect technology, a fitness interface and a Surface multimedia table.

Rather than the hotel room controlling the guest, the guest is able to control the room environment by body gestures and voice recognition, changing the space to suit the situation.

REINVENTING ROOM DESIGN AND THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE

The ambition to create this concept room, piloted by Accor’s design managers and project teams, was driven by the Novotel brand’s ongoing desire to innovate and jump farther and higher, so as to take a truly visionary approach in designing the networked room of the future.

Novotel tapped the Naço architecture firm to translate this vision into reality and develop an overall concept, spanning from the brand identity to the design of an ambitious architecture and smart signage. The resulting Room 3120 breaks free from traditional hotel thinking to offer a new experience in which people can share new sensations and enjoy new services. Targeted to both Novotel’s business customers and family clientele, Room 3120 is packed with technology, but the goods are tastefully integrated in a contemporary layout that puts a priority on fluid lines.

Guests discover the unique ambiance of Room 3120 as they walk into the entrance, designed to serve as a ‘decompression chamber’ between the outside world and a spacious sensorial environment, filled with ingenious practical features and interactive technology that surround without being overwhelming. Both relaxing and flexible, the room belongs to another dimension where guests can use the available technology the way they want, when they want.

Room 3120 is divided into two main spaces dedicated to entertainment and, of course, rest. Each space has its own Xbox 360 console with Kinect. The first, intended for the adults, has a fold-up bed, while the second, designed more as a playroom for the kids, has a tatami mat that rises up on one side to form a bench containing a Surface table with games and various multimedia applications.

Only part of the technology is visible, and smart signage guides users to the solutions they desire. The furniture disappears to make way for integrated, modular functions. The use of diffracted volumes and geometric shapes has made it possible to experience the available space in a new way. The adults’ area is white, rather like in the TRON universe, while the children’s side is more playful and colorful. The two environments co-exist and echo each other with extruded volumes.

An architecturally masterful green capsule, visible from the exterior, replaces the first room’s balcony and offers occupants a high-tech area and comforting cocoon.

“We wanted to reinvent the hotel room experience by harmoniously melding design and new digital technologies,” explains Grégoire Champetier, Global Chief Marketing Officer. “It’s crucial to take our customers’ changing habits and expectations into account. In particular, this means rethinking our rooms in digital terms.”

the BEST TECHNOLOGIES

Novotel and Microsoft have been in partnership for four years, with the Xbox 360 game consoles introduced into more than 300 Novotels globally as part of the brand’s Novotel&Family offer.

The two brands then joined forces to integrate the Xbox 360 console and its new, revolutionary game concept Kinect into the room environment through Kinect’s use of body gestures and voice recognition to control entertainment. With Kinect, the player becomes the joystick and can even use words to tell the console what to do.

This technology is the perfect answer to the need for an interface that guests can pick up and use the minute they walk into the room. For Novotel, the real innovation is to enhance the hotel experience while making it more intuitive.

Kinect does not require any prior training. All the user has to do is wave his or her hand at the console and then navigate through the menus with simple gestures. The console also works with voice control. With the Xbox 360 and its Xbox LIVE service, guests in Room 3120 have access to a whole universe of digital entertainment, including games, music and HD movies.

The Surface table, another Microsoft innovation, responds to users’ hand gestures as well, and is able to recognize several users simultaneously. The technology can manage a large number of contact points on the table’s 30-inch tactile screen. Its applications are virtually unlimited, ranging from web browsing and board games to interactive maps that guests can use to select their destinations in the city.

Offering a surprising experience, the Sensorit interactive mirror is an apparently ordinary mirror that displays a variety of information in graphic or text form. Users can select the various experiences and choose information tags with a simple wave of the hand, accessing news, local weather or a wide range of multimedia content. Radio station NOVA (Le Grand Mix) and BFM Business, France’s leading business and financial news media, have chosen to partner the Room 3120 project, which makes a point of providing rapid access to world news. In addition, a fitness application offers a game in which an avatar reproduces the body movements of the real player, who has to touch a series of falling objects.

The Sensorit mirror is one of the very first applications developed with Kinect technology. The development kit for the revolutionary Kinect interface was recently made available to third-party vendors for integration in their own products.

Novotel and Microsoft will continue their partnership through the deployment of specially-designed Kinect Experience stands in public areas across the Novotel network. They are also considering the possibility of offering the game console in rooms so that guests can benefit from an ultimate entertainment experience during their stay.

Room 3120 at the Novotel Vaugirard Montparnasse is available for general reservations for a period of three months until February 14, 2012. Designed to accommodate up to four guests (two adults and two children under 16), the room will be offered at €199 a night.

Sydney Welcomes Scoot Airlines

December 30, 2011 on 3:59 pm | In Airlines, Australia, New South Wales, Sydney | Comments Off

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell has announced Asia’s newest long-haul budget airline, Scoot, has chosen Sydney for its first international route- injecting about $150 million a year to the NSW economy.

Mr O’Farrell said Scoot would fly daily between Sydney and Singapore from mid-2012, adding 400 airline seats a day into NSW from Asia, giving Australians cheap fares for holiday destinations in Asia.

“This is a great win for Sydney and travellers in the Asia-Pacific region, opening up Australia’s largest city to more international routes and lower-cost carriers,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“Scoot’s decision to fly its first service between Sydney and Singapore from mid-2012 will inject a further AU$146 million annually to the NSW economy.

“This is a significant step towards our goal of doubling overnight tourism expenditure by 2020, placing Sydney front and centre of the boom in budget travel in emerging markets like Singapore, China and India.

“It’s also confirmation that Sydney remains Australia’s only true global city – a position the NSW Government is determined to maintain.”

NSW Minister for Tourism George Souris said Scoot chose Sydney ahead of strong competition from Victoria and Queensland.

“Singapore is one of Australia’s fastest growing tourism markets so we are delighted with Scoot’s decision to choose Sydney as its first port of call,” Mr Souris said.

“Scoot’s arrival gives tourists from the growing markets of China and India more choice on how to get here and enjoy the many attractions and major events we have on offer in Sydney and NSW.”

Scoot CEO, Campbell Wilson, said he was delighted that Sydney, one of the world’s great cities, would be Scoot’s inaugural international destination.

“As the first true no-frills airline operating between Sydney and Asia, we can’t wait to bring a whole new way to travel, even better airfares to shake up the industry. Sydney, here we come,” Mr Wilson said.

Destination NSW CEO, Sandra Chipchase, said there would be a two-year marketing partnership to promote the new service.

“Destination NSW in conjunction with Sydney Airport, Tourism Australia and Scoot will be investing in a two-year marketing and promotion plan for the airline’s new Sydney route,” Ms Chipchase said.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with our partners to develop a number of innovative marketing campaigns to promote Sydney and NSW to increase visitation from some of our key international markets and help achieve our 2020 target of doubling overnight visitor expenditure.”

Sydney Airport CEO, Kerrie Mather, said Sydney Airport, together with Destination NSW, were determined to attract Scoot to Sydney.

“Scoot’s arrival will be a catalyst for growth of both inbound and outbound travel as low-cost airlines drive cheaper fares and deliver more choice.

“More and more people from China, India and South-East Asia have the desire and means to travel overseas. With its beaches, shopping and great places to eat, Sydney is a prime destination for Asian tourists and Scoot is perfectly positioned to capitalise on this market.

“Scoot is an exciting new product, it will service a growing market, and we are confident of its long-term success,” Ms Mather said.

Scoot will be the first airline to come to Sydney under a partnership agreement between Destination NSW and Sydney Airport to promote Sydney actively to new airlines and compete for new routes.

Tourism Australia Managing Director, Andrew McEvoy, said Scoot’s decision delivers on the strategic approach taken to foster new international flights from key source markets in Asia that help achieve Australian tourism’s 2020 growth goals.

“With Singapore now representing Australia’s sixth largest international tourism market, the decision by Scoot to choose Australia as its first port of call is a tremendous result,” Mr McEvoy said.

“Tourism Australia, with our state tourism and airport partners, has taken a ‘team Australia’ approach to ensure Scoot has made Australia its start-up priority.”
