THE ‘ROAD TO MATALA’ EUROPEAN TOUR WILL REVIVE THE LEGENDARY ‘HIPPIE TRAIL’ ON JUNE 5TH 2013 IN A TRADITIONAL VW BEETLE.
AN EMERGING UK SINGER-SONGWRITER WILL DRIVE THE HISTORIC EUROPEAN ROUTE TO THE FINAL DESTINATION AT THE MATALA BEACH FESTIVAL IN CRETE.
THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL HEADLINER, HUGH CORNWELL, FORMER FRONTMAN OF ICONIC UK BAND ‘THE STRANGLERS’ WILL BECOME THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST TO HEADLINE THIS GROWING MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL WITH IT’S UNIQUE HISTORY.
Matala Beach in Southern Crete first became famous in the 1960s & 70s when it became a temporary home for a stream of young travelers making their journey along the famous ‘hippie trail’. They lived in the ancient caves on the beach for weeks and months at a time, playing music, writing poetry, painting, drawing, fishing, drinking, contemplating and enjoying life in the remote and idyllic destination of Matala.
In the early 1970s Joni Mitchell became the most famous resident of the caves, using a lengthy stay to provide inspiration for songs on her critically acclaimed ‘Blue’ album. In fact the song ‘Carey details her life at Matala Beach and visits to The Mermaid Cafe in a fabulous manner.
In 2011 the village threw a party to celebrate the launch of a book written about that unique and fascinating era. That party became the annual Matala Beach Festival and has in the past 2 years attracted almost 100,000 visitors who are fans of music and art.
Matala Beach Festival 2013 will be held from 21st to 24th of June under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Tourism and Greek National Tourism Organisation. It is held on the beach beneath the caves and is a free event for the public.
A new partnership between the Matala organizers and UK based international music and event company “Found In Music” will focus on expanding the international awareness of the upcoming Festivals.
This year a new European Tour titled “The Road to Matala” will launch from London on June 5th, retracing the legendary ‘hippie trail’ in a traditional VW Beetle. Emerging British singer-songwriter, Harry Keyworth, will drive from London to Matala Beach with a video blogging co-driver. They will perform at live events in European cities along the route including London Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Athens. Finally arriving at the end destination for a performance at the Matala Beach Festival. Harry will use an official Road To Matala guitar provided by Epiphone guitars, an iconic music brand which originated in Greece and is celebrating its 140th Anniversary this year.
SUNDAY JUNE 23RD : This free festival will write a new chapter in Matala’s history in 2013 when Hugh Cornwell, former frontman of iconic UK band “The Stranglers”, becomes the first international artist to headline the event, indicating its significance as a destination with a unique history that is still loved by successful artists. The Stranglers had a string of international hits in the 70s and 80s led by Hugh Cornwell, including Peaches, No More Heroes, Golden Brown, Always the Sun, Strange Little Girl, Skin Deep and many more. This will form part of Hugh’s tour of the USA, UK and Europe promoting his latest solo album ‘Totem & Taboo’.
SATURDAY JUNE 22ND : Matala Beach Festival Celebrates 40 Years Of \’Dark Side Of The Moon\’ By Pink Floyd
We will be celebrating this 40th Anniversary with a playback of the album and a live performance by the fantastic \’Kings of Floyd\’ tribute band. This is hosted in partnership with new live music brand www.itsmygeneration.com.
