The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument was designated in August. The 87,000-acre national monument is located east of Baxter State Park and includes the East Branch of the Penobscot River and vast tracts of forest where visitors will be able to hike, canoe, hunt, fish, snowmobile and cross-country ski. To navigate this stunning area, the Katahdin Woods & Waters Scenic Byway is an 89-mile-long route that offers breathtaking views of Katahdin and the Appalachian chain, and provides a mix of pastoral farms, meadows, recreational trails, and working forests filled with wildlife and significant natural areas. The byway begins at the southern entrance of Baxter State Park and winds its way through Millinocket along Route 11 and the Penobscot River to Patten, ending at Baxter’s northern entrance at Grand Lake Matagamon. (katahdinwoodsandwaters.com)**

Hikers are now able to access the Bigelow Preserve directly from the Stratton Brook Hut at Maine Huts & Trails. The 1.47-mile-long trail will traverse down into the preserve directly from Stratton Brook Hut, meeting up with the Esker Trail. Hikers will then have the opportunity to hike several trails in the Bigelow Preserve, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. (mainehuts.org)

The Moosehead Pinnacle Pursuit is a new six mountain hiking challenge in the Moosehead Lake region of Maine. The mountains include: Mount Kineo, Number Four Mountain, Whitecap Mountain, Eagle Rock, Big Moose Mountain, and Borestone Mountain.
