“La Estancia” is a small Ecolodge located in the community of Yumani, in the southern part of the Island of the Sun in the Titicaca Lake, Bolivia; it gets its name from the small town of the same name where it is found. This one-of-a-kind eco-lodge is based on a deep respect for the environment, the appreciation of local culture and the social inclusion of communities located on the Island of the Sun.
The beginning of 2017 was marked by a beautiful event hosted at “La Estancia” that took place from the 9th to the 13th of January. The 1rst International Permaculture course welcomed 22 participants from diverse backgrounds and ages who shared a common goal: to learn and gain tools about permaculture, a system of eco-design which seeks to build sustainable habitats based on a deep respect for the environment. Antonio Moretti, an Argentinian engineer who is well-known for his contributions to the field of permaculture, led the course providing useful knowledge and great enthusiasm. Since its foundation, “La Estancia” has always sought to deepen its commitment with the environment in the different areas of operation of the lodge: water treatment, use of solar energy and waste management, to name just a few. Recently, much emphasis has been put on generating criteria to keep up with ecological standards in the elaboration of its food menu as well. Therefore, this course was a great opportunity for the lodge to improve several of its environmental features.
On this video you will see how the participants were able to combine theoretical background with hands-on experiences to be found in situ at “La Estancia” such as building a mudbrick oven and working at the lodge’s greenhouse and garden. Amazing views of the Andes Mountain Range accompanied productive work days altogether creating an ideal atmosphere for such an event.
Without a doubt, this is only the first of many other such events to be hosted at “La Estancia”.
