Clayoquot Wilderness Resort has been announced as one of the newest members of the Relais & Châteaux association of properties, increasing the well-respected brand’s collection to five locations in British Columbia and eleven in Canada.
The decision to add Clayoquot Wilderness Resort creates a unique experience for Relais & Châteaux travellers, providing a West Coast destination that embraces nature and holds a very high standard of service for guests. Clayoquot Wilderness Resort marks a new trend for wilderness experiences for the well-established association as they move to offer additional destinations to match their outstanding hotel properties around the world.
“We’re very pleased to welcome Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in British Columbia to the Relais & Châteaux family,” says Patrick O’Connell, the president of the North American Delegation. “This rugged, but refined property offers a unique approach to luxury in a serene and sensual atmosphere. Glamorous camping in a natural setting provides a perfect therapeutic escape for our adventurous guests.”
Known for instilling a sense of place in the wilderness, reminiscent of late 19th Century Great Camps of the Adirondacks and safari camps of Africa, the eco-resort offers accommodation in a series of luxury ensuite tents. The guest tents are surrounded by an open kitchen concept dining cookhouse, outdoor fireplace and seating area, a luxury spa, yoga studio, a billiards tent, library tent, art tent, fly-fishing tent, and three hot tubs and two saunas – all linked by cedar boardwalks under the rainforest canopy.
“For us, Relais & Châteaux was an association that we felt would further establish Clayoquot Wilderness Resort as a outstanding option for guests with a sense of adventure and a discerning eye for the highest levels of service and experience,” says Caton.
Clayoquot Wilderness Resort joins the additional Relais & Châteaux properties in British Columbia, which include the Wedgewood Hotel & Spa, Wickaninnish Inn, Sonora Resort and Hastings House Country House Hotel.
Established over half a century ago, Relais & Châteaux is an association of the world’s finest hoteliers, chefs and restaurateurs that has set the standard for excellence in hospitality. Relais & Châteaux has redefined luxury hospitality by emphasizing holistic experiences that transport its guests, taking them on a sensual journey and introducing them to a deeper, truer understanding of the Art of Living. Today, there are more than 520 members that are a part of Relais & Châteaux.

Surrounded by glacial mountains and lush rain forest, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is located in British Columbia’s fragile Clayoquot Sound Biosphere reserve, right at the mouth of the Bedwell River, approximately 40 minutes outside of Tofino, BC. One of the first to be named a Canadian ‘signature experience’ by the Canadian Tourism Commission, the all-inclusive eco-resort opens annually from May to September. It offers three, four and seven night packages, starting at $4,750 per person in shoulder season and $6,353 in peak season.
Guests experience safari-style tent accommodation (many with ensuite washrooms) gourmet cuisine and the Healing Ground spa. Activities include hiking, horseback riding, ocean and fresh water fishing, whale and bear watching, a Wild Side First Nations Interpretive Trail, a natural rock climbing wall, an archery range, a ten-stand sporting clays course, kayaking, canoeing and heli-exploring. Always innovating, the resort’s new “Over the Top” accommodation experience is located on the top of Mt. Ursus and comes with a private guide and chef for an unforgettable overnight excursion. Access to Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is typically via floatplane from Vancouver’s International Airport or water taxi from the docks at Tofino.
New for 2014, the Resort added their “Over the Top” experience, which guests were able to book as an add-on to their trip. The experience includes one night on the top of Mount Ursus in the lap of glamping luxury, with a beautifully appointed private tent complete with breathtaking views. Tents mirror the experience at Bedwell River basecamp, with a four-poster bed, down duvet, antique furniture, fireplace, and hot shower. A lounge and dining tent also provides every comfort needed for the dream night away. Guests are flown up to this romantic pinnacle via helicopter, along with their own guide and chef, who have their own accommodations a discreet but safe distance away.
