Wilderness Travel is First Major Adventure Travel Company to Offer Guided Trip Along the Ancient Pilgrimage Route
Modern day travelers will walk the same path as ancient pilgrims venturing to Rome and on to the Holy Land on a new trip from Wilderness Travel. The first major tour company to offer a trek along Italy’s historic La Via Francigena, Wilderness Travel, with their guide who actually lives on the route itself, take guests to the best portions of this 7th-century trail, which originally spanned nearly 1000 miles from Canterbury to Rome.
Barbara Banks, director of marketing and new trip development for Wilderness Travel, says that interest in pilgrimages is on the rise. “Pilgrimage is becoming a really meaningful thing in people’s lives,” she says. “Whether they are from a particular spiritual tradition or not, it’s a way to mark a certain beginning or ending to their lives and a way to mark major transitions.”
On Wilderness Travel’s 10-day La Via Francigena: Siena to Rome Along the Pilgrim Trail, travelers cover 80 miles, winding through the Italian countryside past golden wheat fields, olive groves, cypress trees and ancient Roman and Etruscan ruins. The trip crosses into beautiful and historic towns and hamlets, including Viterbo, Siena, Montefiascone, Capranica, Sutri, ending in Rome walking right into St. Peter’s Square. While compared to “El Camino,” which sees hundreds of thousands of travelers each year, La Via Francigena is little known and best traveled in spring and fall during cooler weather.
For Catholic travelers, the company helps secure a Testimonium from the Vatican certifying they have completed a portion of the trail.
Hotels include a 15th-century mansion and a castle built on the ruins of a Roman villa. “We’ve picked the most beautiful section that brings you into the architecture, history and culture of the regions of this route,” says Banks.
There are currently two departures for the trip: September 16 and October 7, 2016. Pricing starts at $4995 per person. For more information on the La Via Francigena trip from Wilderness Travel, visit www.WildernessTravel.com or call 800-368-2794.
