Master the Skill of Fairisle Knitting in the Island that Started it all with ECT Travel
Bespoke tour operator ECT Travel is pleased to announce its new Shetland Knitting tour with renowned industry expert, Alison Crowther-Smith. On this multifaceted escape, guests can experience the magic and history of Northern Scotland whilst they learn the skill of traditional Fair Isle knitting technique in the very birthplace of the craft. Taking place from the 27th – 31st July, the five-day tour is the perfect opportunity for a remote, unforgettable learning holiday.
Guests will receive daily instruction from experienced teacher Alison Crowther-Smith and her companion Kathryn Morgan on how to knit Fair Isle accessories, designed exclusively for this ECT Travel tour. The trip will also immerse guests in the history of the island with visits to the Norse and pre-historic Jarlshof settlements, one of the most important and awe-inspiring archaeological sites in Scotland. They will also partake in voyages to the Shetland Museum and Archives, a guided tour of the Shetland Textile Museum as well as a guided tour of Jamieson & Smith Wool Brokers, the main manufacturer of Shetland produced wool.
Participants will leave with extensive knowledge and understanding of a huge range of specialised knitting skills and techniques including how to read and use knitting charts and how to maintain even tension.
Guests will also have the chance to discover the mystery of the sweet and secluded isle of Lerwick. With wide open spaces and pure air Lerwick is Shetland’s only real town and houses a textile museum where participants can learn even more about the island’s strong heritage of crafting and fabrics. A restored fishing station, the building is steeped in culture as the birthplace of Arthur Anderson who introduced Shetland to Queen Victoria after gifting her some fine lace stockings. Throughout the duration of this highland escape, guests will have the chance to see how the island inhabitants lived in the historic Croft Houses and made a living from land and sea.
Guide prices start from £1,059 per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room a half-board basis at the Shetland Hotel in Lerwick. Lunch is included on all days excluding day two. Rates include entrances to all sites and museums, instruction by Alison Crowther-Smith. An ECT tour manager will also be on hand during the course of your travels. Single rates are also available. Flights costs start from approximately £250. www.ECTTravel.com; 01225 333747
