British Airways has launched its hand luggage-only fares on 10 routes, in association with its partners American Airlines, Finnair and Iberia.
The new ‘basic’ fares are available on flights from London to Austin, Boston, Denver, Oakland, Philadelphia in the US, and to Delhi, Dubai, Hong Kong, Punta Cana and Singapore.
The airline says basic fares, which went on sale today, would cost up to £60 less than the standard return fare.
Flights to Dubai cost from £143, Boston from £175, Oakland from £185, Denver from £191, Delhi from £210, Hong Kong from £228, Singapore from £230, Philadelphia from £234, Punta Cana from £240 and Austin from £246.
All prices are each way, based on a return fare. Basic fares can be combined with other fare types, for example passengers can travel with hand luggage-only outbound but by a standard ticket for the return journey.
A meal is still included in the basic ticket price and passengers will be allowed to take two items of hand luggage on board. However, they will have to pay an extra £80 if they want to check in a bag and seat selection costs and extra £20 each way.
Virgin Atlantic will also offer hand luggage-only ‘Light’ fares from this spring, but these will be available on all its routes, not just a selection. Virgin announced last month that it was also introducing an extra legroom Delight fare and a Classic fare, which includes priority seat selection.
