WestJet says its ultra-low cost unit Swoop is prepping for a launch of transborder flights to the US.
More details on specific routes and a planned start date will be disclosed later this week, said WestJet CEO Ed Sims.
Reports say routes will include Las Vegas and Phoenix, Arizona.
Florida destinations Orlando, Tampa Fort Lauderdale are also apparently being mulled.
“We are clearly concentrating on those airports to help migrate the five million Canadians who are crossing the border to Buffalo and Bellingham and make sure that there’s less need to travel on North American counterparts,” Sims said during a conference call.
“There will be opportunities to be profitable on those routes that WestJet with higher costs is not able to operate,” said Sims.
