Qantas will put its new Boeing 787 Dreamliners into service on a new transpacific route linking Melbourne with San Francisco.
The airline hasn’t revealed the start date but said it would launch ‘by late 2018.’
Ticket sales would begin in early 2018, it said.
There is demand for the route, said Qantas’ chief executive in charge of international operations, Alison Webster.
“A significant number of our Melbourne passengers flying to Los Angeles already connect on to San Francisco,” she said.
The announcement came as Qantas began deploying its new 787s on its existing route between Los Angeles and Melbourne.
The San Francisco route launch will then likely lead to a tweaking of flight operations to the US West Coast.
“Capacity between the US and Melbourne will be rebalanced to match demand for the two Californian cities.”
Qantas expects to take delivery of eight new Dreamliners by the end of next year.
