Autumn 2011 sees Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco add four new luxury Berber Tented Suites to its original six suites.

Once again designed by Yvonne Golds of Real Studios, these Berber Tented Suites are similar in design to the original suites, combining 21st century comforts with original artefacts, fabrics and furniture sourced from local markets or commissioned from local craftsman in Marrakech. Their textures, colours and feel evoke a heady ‘Midnight at the Oasis’ romance to the experience, but with a slightly cleaner, more contemporary feel.

The palette this time is inspired by either sunset pinks or the blue of the dawn sky. Either blue or pink is selected for the fabric lining that drapes the inside of the tent, supported by its wooden beam structure. These ethereal tones are complemented by dark, hand carved wooden furnishings; elaborate ceramics, vintage or handcrafted lamps and lush piles of cushions and rugs.

Each Berber tented Suite has a sitting area, with a step up to the luxurious bedroom area, allowing both spaces generous views out through three sets of full-height doors and windows onto the private deck with loungers, as well as the valley and mountains beyond.

Environmental sustainability is a key aspect of Virgin Limited Edition’s properties, and Yvonne sourced recycled floor tiles from Italy for the bathrooms (70% recycled material) and uses recycled car tires in bathroom stools (spray painted silver and topped with a fabric cushion). The vintage furnishings, mirrors, rugs and screens, all sourced locally; further reduce the Tents’ carbon footprint.

Perched on the hillside, five minutes from the main Kasbah, the luxurious Berber Tented suites offer stunning views of the Atlas Mountains. Rates start from €730 per room, per night, including bed and breakfast and is based on double occupancy.

An enchanted place [...]

For some winter sun and great Christmas shopping, Marrakech is the place to be. Just 3.5 hours from London, you are immediately plunged into the magical realm of a bygone age; a culture so different from ours it really does feel like you have stepped back in time to a biblical age. An enchanted place full of snake charmers and soothsayers, acrobats and water-sellers; so full of colour, textures, smells and intrigue that all you can do is catch your breath and stare in wonder.

The old medina and souks are a labyrinth of winding alleys interspersed with squares devoted to specific crafts; wool dying, brass and copper beating, apothecary stalls, cosmetics, herbs, jewellers, leather workers, carpenters, sieve makers, perfumes, spices, slippers and lanterns – an endless array for unique Christmas presents and boundless retail therapy.

Accommodation in Marrakech is just as varied, from luxury Riads to Boutique hotels, Maison d’hotes to conventional hotels there is something to suit everyone. For a short break we highly recommend staying in a Marrakech Riad in the heart of the Medina, within walking distance of the main d’Jemaa el Fna square and souks. An oasis of calm and tranquillity hidden amongst the madness of the city, staying in a Riad gives a true flavour of city life.

The high Atlas Mountains are a mere hour away so great for a day trip out of the city. Snow permitting there are also skiing opportunities Oukaimaden just 1.5 hours from Marrakech so perfect for a day of exhilarating winter activity.

The Riad Les Yeux Bleus is in the Medina, about 15 minute walk from the main square and souks. Beautifully traditional in style, it has 8 bedrooms, swimming pool and lovely roof terraces with views over the city and beyond to the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains.

A four night stay at the gorgeous Riad Les Yeux Bleus including transfers and breakfast is £320.00 per person based on two sharing a room; Easyjet flights during November and December from Gatwick are currently priced FROM £89.00 per person including 1 piece of hold luggage; essential for the all the shopping that will be done!

Dragoman, one of the world’s most respected and reputable adventure travel operators, is launching 30 new trips in its 2012 brochure, out at the end of November.

The company, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year (2011), is now the only major UK operator to offer overland trips to Georgia, Malaysia (and Singapore), Mongolia and Morocco, and several more countries in West Africa including Angola, The Congo, DRC and Gabon – destinations new to the company for 2012.

As a result of adding these new West Africa destinations to complement Dragoman’s existing comprehensive South, East and North Africa portfolio, travellers will now be able to overland around almost the entire African continent, from Casablanca to Cape Town, Cape Town to Cairo.

Dragoman is also launching a new range of ‘in-depth’ Africa overland adventures in response to customer feedback. “Customers have told us they want the option of experiencing overlanding ‘like it used to be’, says Charlie Hopkinson, Dragoman’s Managing Director. “You could say that we’re going back to our roots,” he adds. Customers can now choose from classic ‘standard’ overland routes, many of which were pioneered by Dragoman, and more immersive adventures (with additional inclusions) operated at a more considered, relaxed pace.

The soaring popularity of Nile adventures, Central Asia and China trips has led the company to significantly increase its departures there.

The 2012 brochure is also previewing trips to be launched in 2013, including a truly epic overland journey of almost 10,000 miles from Anchorage to Ushuaia. It’s anticipated that the North America section will see overlanders’ swap the usual purpose-built Mercedes Benz 4WD trucks for a specially adapted iconic American school bus. As well as journeying through North America, Canada and Mexico, the company will be launching new trips through Central America, from Mexico City to Antigua, Antigua to Panama City from where travellers will join trips already operated by the company, overlanding down the entire South American continent to Ushuaia at its southern-most tip.

As well as showcasing 30 new trips in its 2012 brochure, Dragoman, a company which has always been committed to offering responsible, sustainable and culturally immersive ‘grass-roots’ adventure, has increased the number of homestays it uses (everything from gers, yurts and traditional local homes) by over 50%, in Asia, Africa and South America.

The company has also invested significantly into building new trucks and refurbishing others in its 24 strong fleet for the start of 2012, with plans for further improvements during the year, to optimise customer comfort and safety.

All trips that Dragoman offers are carbon offset.
